| | | CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: RAMON SESSIONS will have to adjust to a major downgrade in teammates, but he has the kind of versatile offensive skill set to be the focal point of this offense . . . The athletic GERALD HENDERSON has made strides the past two seasons. Realistically, his offensive skills are those of a No. 4 or 5 option . . . Coach Mike Dunlap is high on KEMBA WALKER, who was sometimes overwhelmed as a rookie. With a few new sets built in for him, he could thrive as a sixth man getting starter's minutes . . . BEN GORDON won't overtake Henderson, but should see big minutes as the Cats' only shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a D-League talent . . . MATT CARROLL, in the final year of his $27 million deal, symbolizes everything that's gone wrong under Michael Jordan. FORWARDS: Drafting MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST was as much about changing the losing culture as it was adding a piece they needed. MKG's statistical output is a question mark, but he'll see big minutes as a defensive stopper and intangibles guy . . . This team is seriously lacking in the post, where they may have no choice but to play TYRUS THOMAS for significant minutes. The talented but uber-underachieving big man claims to have added 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason. If nothing else, they might showcase him in a desperate attempt to get some trade value . . . Rookie JEFFERY TAYLOR figures to make the team and has the versatility and athleticism to be a respectable second-unit guy. CENTERS: Charlotte sees BISMACK BIYOMBO as a franchise cornerstone. He can certainly rebound and block shots, but his offense is atrocious . . . BRENDAN HAYWOOD brings a veteran presence. At his age he can't go more than 15 or so minutes per night . . . BYRON MULLENS never saw a shot he didn't like. He'll get one more chance to prove he's an NBA rotation player, able to play the four or five . . . DeSAGANA DIOP is doing those things that DeSagana Diop does. | | PORTLAND: GUARDS: Portland will turn point guard duties over to rookie DAMIAN LILLARD. The leap from Big Sky Conference to NBA will be a big one, but Lillard is an efficient scorer who can manage the offense . . . WESLEY MATTHEWS is more of a glue guy. He can't create his own offense, but he can heat up as a streaky catch-and-shoot guy . . . RONNIE PRICE should emerge as Lillard's top backup, a role he's filled at numerous stops . . . Second-rounder WILL BARTON could emerge as a rotation player. He's a versatile wing who must prove he can play off the ball . . . SASHA PAVLOVIC will play both the two and three, and can still stroke it from long distance . . . NOLAN SMITH, a misstep of the last regime, is a fringe roster player . . . ELLIOT WILLIAMS, a defensive-minded combo guard, tore his Achilles in mid-September and expects to miss the entire season. FORWARDS: LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE had a couple of health scares over the past six months, but he should enter the season 100 percent. He's clearly Portland's best player . . . NICOLAS BATUM felt rightly disrespected by his secondary role in Portland. All signs point to a bigger role in 2012-13 . . . VICTOR CLAVER is an athletic scrapper who won't do much offensively even if he does get big minutes . . . JOEL FREELAND could become their first big man off the bench . . . JARED JEFFRIES is still relevant as a defensive specialist . . . The highlight of LUKE BABBITT's career might be that mention on Onion:Sportsdome. CENTERS: J.J. HICKSON is a black hole on offense and a liability on defense, but he can score and rebound, which is good enough to be the starting center in Portland's weak frontcourt . . . MEYERS LEONARD might not be quite ready for 30-plus minutes, but he'll have to learn on the fly due to Portland's lack of veteran bigs. He has some long-term upside as a 7-footer with some nice athleticism and touch inside 10 feet. |

*Bobcats-Trail Blazers Preview* ===============================
By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer
Charlotte (13-45) at Portland (27-31), 10:00 p.m. EDT
While the Portland Trail Blazers were one of the league's worst rebounding teams during February, they opened this month with a season-best effort on the boards.
Portland shouldn't have much trouble building off that performance on Monday night when they host the NBA-worst Charlotte Bobcats, who have been historically bad on the glass lately.
After a season-worst four-game home skid in January, the Trail Blazers (27-31) have won six of eight at the Rose Garden following a 109-94 victory over Minnesota on Saturday. It was just their second win in 10 games overall, and they are still 4 1/2 games behind Houston for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
"We know what we need to do. We need to win games, especially on our home floor," said guard Damian Lillard, who had a game-high 24 points against the Timberwolves.
Portland ranked near the bottom of the NBA with 39.4 rebounds per game last month, but pulled down a season-high 55 against a Timberwolves team missing its entire starting frontcourt of Kevin Love, Andrei Kirilenko and Nikola Pekovic due to injuries.
J.J. Hickson, the team's leading rebounder (10.5 rpg), finished with 18 points and 16 rebounds, while Nicolas Batum, LaMarcus Aldridge and Meyers Leonard combined for 23 boards.
Hickson enters this contest on a tear, averaging 18.8 points on 68.5 percent shooting and 13.6 rebounds while recording five straight double-doubles. He'll try to keep it going against a Charlotte team that ranks near the bottom of the league in rebound differential (minus-4.7).
The Bobcats (13-46) were outrebounded 62-24 in a 30-point loss at Utah on Friday and 60-31 in a 119-83 defeat at Sacramento on Sunday. Their minus-67 rebounding differential is the NBA's worst over a two-game span dating back to at least the 1985-86 season.
"You have to stay with it. You have to have a little bit of pride individually as a team," forward Josh McRoberts said of the team's overall struggles.
Byron Mullens (7.8 per game) and Bismack Biyombo (7.1) lead the team in rebounding, but have 12 combined over the last two contests. Mullens had 12 points and 12 rebounds, and the Bobcats were outrebounded 48-41 in a 118-112 overtime loss to Portland on Dec. 3.
Ben Gordon led the way with 29 points on 8-of-12 shooting from 3-point range and Kemba Walker added 22 in that game, but both guards are mired in slumps. Gordon has averaged 5.8 points on 27.3 percent shooting in his last 10 games, while Walker has averaged 11.3 on 31.4 percent shooting in his last three.
The Bobcats, who have lost 41 of 47 overall, have averaged 78.3 points on 37.2 percent shooting on their road trip that wraps up at Portland.
Aldridge and Batum combined for 42 points and 26 rebounds for the Trail Blazers in the first meeting, but Hickson had only two points.
Portland has averaged 102.5 points - 5.3 above its season average - in its last eight at home. The Trail Blazers should be able to continue that trend against the Bobcats, who have given up 107.7 points per game during their six-game losing streak.
The Trail Blazers have won four in a row at home over Charlotte and six of seven overall between the teams.
