KEY GAME INFORMATION
LA LAKERS: GUARDS: At 36 and coming off multiple injuries, it seems unlikely that vintage KOBE BRYANT will ever return. Still, he'll get to the line enough to be among the league's scoring leaders . . . JEREMY LIN will start and be useful when his streaky shot gets hot . . . NICK YOUNG demanded the Lakers re-sign him, and what Swaggy P wants, Swaggy P gets (after L.A. struck out on every free agent). He'll miss the first couple weeks of the season as he recovers from thumb surgery . . . XAVIER HENRY will try to establish himself as a deep threat off the bench . . . JORDAN CLARKSON is the kind of big guard they've paired with Bryant over the years. He could be a year or two away from contributing . . . STEVE NASH is out for the season with a back injury. He's likely played his last game as a member of the Lakers. FORWARDS: You know it's been a rough offseason when CARLOS BOOZER, who no contending team wanted, is your prize. He's still a zero at the defensive end, but Boozer can shoot from mid-range and could see more minutes in a thin L.A. frontcourt . . . WESLEY JOHNSON gives them a spot-up shooter on the wing who brings some defensive versatility . . . They'll probably pair Boozer and teenager JULIUS RANDLE together often. The rookie has drawn comparisons to Zach Randolph . . . RYAN KELLY is a serviceable stretch-4 for the second unit. CENTERS: JORDAN HILL will see time at the 4 and 5 spots. His per-minute rates are strong, but his stamina is not . . . C'mon, who doesn't like ED DAVIS? . . . The Lakers will likely use Boozer, Hill and Davis as undersized centers, because entering the year they only have lead-footed ROBERT SACRE as a true 5. He's not a candidate to play more than 20 minutes per night.
PHILADELPHIA: GUARDS: MICHAEL CARTER-WILLIAMS wasn't the most legit Rookie of the Year, but he had his moments. He should be a little more efficient in his second season, and Philly certainly doesn't have a better alternative at the point. A shoulder injury will likely keep him sidelined for the first three weeks of the upcoming season . . . TONY WROTEN makes some highlight-reel plays and will likely start at the 2. He's too erratic to be in the rotation for a playoff team . . . As for the rest of the backcourt, ELLIOT WILLIAMS is looking to revive his career, and he's no worse than James Anderson and Hollis Thompson, who were starting for this team last season . . . Injuries have all but ended JASON RICHARDSON's career. He's on the final year of his deal, and might not play in 2014-15 after suffering a stress fracture to his right foot in late October . . . ALEXEY SHVED could play some quality minutes at both guard spots for this team. FORWARDS: The 2014 draft was deep, allowing Philly to land a first-round value in second-rounder K.J. McDANIELS. He's certainly better than anyone the Sixers trotted out at the 3-spot last season . . . HOLLIS THOMPSON could keep a starting job warm again . . . Another second-rounder, JERAMI GRANT, could play his way into the rotation. He's talented, but he's also something of a 'tweener, and like most Syracuse guys sitting in a 2-3 zone, Grant never learned how to e-on-one defense . . . ARNETT MOULTRIE has been something of a problem child in Philly, but he's good enough to make this rotation if he turns it around effort-wise . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is here as a mentor for Joel Embiid. CENTERS: NERLENS NOEL is ready to make his debut. His collegiate rates suggest he'll rebound and block shots. The question marks are durability, functional strength and offensive game. He'll get to learn on the fly . . . JOEL EMBIID's foot problems will keep him out until at least midseason, and the Sixers will certainly play it safe with him. On raw talent, he's a future star. The questions are durability, and whether he can co-exist with Noel.

*Lakers-76ers Preview* ======================

By JACK CASSIDY STATS Writer

Los Angeles (19-52) at Philadelphia (18-55), 7:00 p.m. EDT

Quality rookie seasons from Nerlens Noel and Jordan Clarkson have been the silver linings of otherwise dismal seasons for the Philadelphia 76ers and Los Angeles Lakers.

Still, poor showings from their respective first-year players may be in each team's best interest Monday night as they continue their race toward the bottom of the NBA standings.

Philadelphia (18-56) currently owns the third-worst record in the NBA, but could move closer to fourth-worst Los Angeles (19-53) with its third home victory in four tries.

The league's third-worst record will have a 15.6 percent chance at earning the top pick at the NBA draft lottery, while the fourth-worst record will have an 11.9 percent chance.

There's an added wrinkle in this matchup. Philadelphia will get Los Angeles' pick if it's six or lower this summer, while the Lakers will keep it if it's 1-5. As of now, two teams would need to jump them in the lottery for the 76ers to get the pick.

Philadelphia has lost four of five since winning consecutive games March 18-20, but nearly stunned Cleveland on Sunday before losing 87-86. Robert Covington hit a 3-pointer to cut the Cavaliers' lead to one with just under four minutes remaining, but neither team managed to score for the remainder of the game.

Noel finished with eight points - his fewest in 10 games - but tallied 11 boards for his fourth consecutive double-digit rebounding effort. He scored a career-best 30 points Friday against the Los Angeles Clippers, and has averaged 16.5 along with 12.5 rebounds in his last four.

What's impressed coach Brett Brown most, however, is Noel's effort down the stretch.

"I walked in the locker room and his head was down between two towels," Brown said. "We're in late March and we have 18 wins, but he hurts - and I love that. That whole group in there feels like we let one through our fingers on the road - and I love that."

Clarkson has been similarly solid for the Lakers. He has averaged 14.5 points since entering the starting lineup on Jan. 23, and 20.5 points in his last four.

Clarkson amassed 18 points, six rebounds and seven assists Sunday against Brooklyn while Jordan Hill had 22 points and 16 boards, but the Lakers lost 107-99.

Los Angeles' defense had been far improved in its 11 games prior to the loss to the Nets. The Lakers allowed an average of 97.2 points in that stretch compared with 105.9 per game through the season's first 60 contests, but reverted back to that old form as Brooklyn shot 48.3 percent from the field and scored 61 points in the first half.

They're 1-33 when allowing the opposition shoots 47 percent or better.

"We just wasn't in the right place at the right time in the first half," Hill said. "There wasn't a lot of help. We were letting drives get to the middle. It was tough."

The Lakers limited the 76ers to 36.0 percent shooting - their stingiest defensive effort since December 2013 - in a 101-87 win on March 22. They've won their last two trips to Philadelphia, and have allowed the 76ers to score more than 100 points only twice in the previous 11 meetings.

Jeremy Lin, who had a season-high 29 points last week against the 76ers, missed Sunday's game with an upper respiratory infection. It's unclear if he'll play Monday.
