KEY GAME INFORMATION
BOSTON: GUARDS: RAJON RONDO's name is etched on the trading block. Regardless of where he lands, his injured knee should be 100 percent healthy . . . With an improved three-point shot, AVERY BRADLEY has become a complete player. His defense guarantees minutes regardless . . . MARCUS SMART seems to be waiting in the wings for a Rondo trade. In the meantime, he'll back up both guard spots. Just like in college, he'll be brilliant at times, but inconsistent . . . Local product PHIL PRESSEY will stick around as a No. 3 point guard . . . EVAN TURNER was a disaster in Indy. He'll have a tough time making this rotation . . . MARCUS THORNTON was acquired as a trade throw-in. The Celtics don't have big plans for the remorseless gunner. FORWARDS: He's isn't a legitimate No. 1 option, but JEFF GREEN will be the go-to guy again. He hasn't been able to handle the extra defensive attention, becoming increasingly inefficient . . . He has plenty of limitations on both ends of the court, but JARED SULLINGER is a crafty scorer. He'll get close to starter minutes as the Celtics search for offense . . . BRANDON BASS will see time at the 4 and the 5. He's made a pledge to improve offensively, but more likely he'll be a defensive presence and a screen-setter . . . JAMES YOUNG missed most of the summer healing a neck injury. He's going to do some damage running the floor, but he doesn't have the skills for the half-court game in the NBA . . . GERALD WALLACE is playing out the string. CENTERS: KELLY OLYNYK has the most upside in this frontcourt. His rare mobility and skill set for a 7-footer made a difference last year. It's just a question of whether he can hold up defensively down low . . . TYLER ZELLER gives them another solid 7-footer who opposing defenses have to account for. He'll fit well in head coach Brad Stevens' system . . . JOEL ANTHONY isn't going to get off the bench.
CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: LANCE STEPHENSON started chucking and padding stats after missing the All-Star team last season, fueling Indiana's collapse. He's a potentially solid role player, but if he tries to be the alpha for the Hornets, it could be a long season . . . KEMBA WALKER has become a solid playmaker, though he'll lose some touches while playing alongside Stephenson . . . The Hornets seem to be done with GERALD HENDERSON, who will stay in the rotation, but see a reduced role with all the Hornets' offseason acquisitions . . . GARY NEAL can play both guard spots as a high-scoring sixth man . . . P.J. HAIRSTON needs to stay out of trouble off the court if he's to have any chance of becoming a three-point specialist off the bench . . . BRIAN ROBERTS steps in as a No. 3 point guard. FORWARDS: Charlotte reloaded in the frontcourt, but MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST will likely claim a starting job due to his defense. It's probably time to accept that MKG will never have much of an offensive game . . . CODY ZELLER will have every opportunity to grab a starting job early on. Unfortunately, his inability to score in traffic limits his effectiveness . . . MARVIN WILLIAMS will see major minutes at both forward spots. He's a capable defender who has added a three-point shot to his repertoire . . . He's still a teenager, so he may not carve out major minutes this year, but NOAH VONLEH has by far the most upside among their 4's and 5's. He's a potentially elite stretch-4 . . . JEFF TAYLOR's Achilles is close to 100 percent. He has a shot to re-claim a rotation spot. CENTERS: AL JEFFERSON is a flawed player, but he gives Charlotte exactly what the team is looking for: A low-post threat on the offensive end of the court. Like Walker, he'll also suffer a bit with Stephenson coming in, but he's still the focal point of this offense . . . He's not quite a bust because he can defend, but BISMACK BIYOMBO hasn't shown any semblance of an offensive game.

*Celtics-Hornets Preview* =========================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Boston (32-40) at Charlotte (31-41), 7:00 p.m. EDT

Of the four teams battling for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, three have contributed to the current level of intrigue mostly by subtraction.

The Hornets and Boston Celtics are two of them, and they'll meet Monday night in Charlotte with the home team trying to secure the season series.

The Hornets (31-41) sit one-half game behind the Celtics (32-41), who are tied with Indiana and are one-half back of Brooklyn for the No. 8 seed. Charlotte has taken two of three in the season series and would gain the tiebreaker with another win over Boston.

"It's important if it ever came down with us and them," said Hornets coach Steve Clifford, whose team's 23-20 conference record is the best of the bunch. "And it's also important with the conference record. Our conference record is pretty good. Our problem has been the West. It's a conference and obviously the head-to-head."

The greater concern is stringing together some victories. Charlotte won 115-100 Saturday over an Atlanta team which rested its starters, but it's part of a 3-8 stretch that hasn't included a winning streak.

Clifford was still critical of the victory despite his team shooting 52.5 percent, including 46.2 from beyond the arc. It was the Hornets' top overall shooting effort in 44 games, but they also allowed the short-handed Hawks to hit 15 of 30 from 3-point range.

"Obviously we caught a break with them resting their guys," said Clifford, who has had no such luxury during his own team's busy stretch. "But you can see that we're fatigued. I thought our guys did a good job wanting to win and playing through a lot of fatigue. We struggled to guard them. They hit a lot of 3s. But any win in this league is a good win, especially in the middle of this 17 (games) in 33 days deal."

Kemba Walker had 21 points, Gerald Henderson scored 20 on 9-of-10 shooting and Mo Williams contributed 18 off the bench.

Henderson has been the more reliable option lately in the starting backcourt, averaging 17.0 points and shooting 51.9 percent in six games. Walker's shot remains inconsistent with the point guard connecting on just 32.6 percent in 10 games back from knee surgery, though he scored 33 in his most recent against the Celtics.

That was a 104-95 win in Boston on Jan. 5, but he missed a 106-98 loss in Boston on Feb. 27. Williams scored 31 points in the loss, while Boston's Isaiah Thomas had 28.

Thomas scored 19 in Sunday's 119-106 home loss to the Los Angeles Clippers, which combined with a Brooklyn win dropped the Celtics out of the No. 8 spot. They've lost five of seven and are shooting 25.9 percent from 3-point range in their last six.

The backcourt trio of Thomas, Marcus Smart and Avery Bradley shot a combined 6 of 25. Thomas is just 10 of 32 (31.3 percent) in three games and Smart is 3 of 17 (17.6).

Boston has a chance to really help itself with this meeting followed by Wednesday's hosting of Indiana, which is also struggling to build any momentum with losses in seven of nine. Charlotte and the Pacers then meet in Indianapolis on Friday.

"Pretty much a must-win game for us," Boston's Tyler Zeller said. "It's a playoff game against one of the team's we're battling against. We have to be ready."
