| | | HOUSTON: GUARDS: The postseason was a different story for JAMES HARDEN, but he was a dominant all-around performer during the past two regular seasons. He'll do the bulk of the ball-handling for the up-tempo Rockets . . . After looking for an upgrade during the offseason, it's back to PATRICK BEVERLEY at the point. He's the No. 4 or 5 option on offense, but his defense will keep him on the floor . . . There's little backcourt depth, so rookie NICK JOHNSON has a shot at the rotation. He's NBA-ready as a defender, but his offensive game is shaky . . . ISH SMITH will push for that back-up point guard job . . . ISAIAH CANAAN will have to shoot the lights out early to get a look in the rotation . . . FRANCISCO GARCIA is still here as a 3-and-D option. FORWARDS: TREVOR ARIZA slides into Chandler Parsons' old role, providing defense and three-point shooting. He has a chance for a career-best output offensively . . . The Rockets know they need an upgrade over TERRENCE JONES, but they struck out during the offseason. He's a hustle guy, but he's too much of a defensive liability at the 4-spot . . . After disappearing last season, DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS has a chance to play himself into a thin frontcourt rotation. He's a potential 7-foot floor spacer . . . JEFF ADRIEN will be a "little things" guy in the second unit . . . They wanted to leave CLINT CAPELA overseas, but he'll be in Houston. He might be the future at the 4-spot, but he's years away . . . KOSTAS PAPANIKOLAOU has potential as a versatile bench option. CENTERS: DWIGHT HOWARD looked healthy again and was, at times, dominant. His game still has obvious flaws, namely free-throw shooting and an inability to step away from the basket, but there's no reason he can't flirt with 20-10 nightly while being among the league leaders in blocks . . . Ex-Rocket JOEY DORSEY returns after a strong stint in Spain. He'll bring some muscle (and six fouls) behind Howard. | | TORONTO: GUARDS: DeMAR DeROZAN has evolved from raw athlete into dangerous scorer. He gets to the line frequently enough that he's virtually guaranteed a 20-PPG average . . . There's some long-term worry with KYLE LOWRY. His stocky body type leaves little room for error on those contested threes he hits, and there's some question of motivation now that he's been paid. But he was so good last season, that the chances of a fall-off seem low . . . Along with being the primary back-up at point guard, GREIVIS VASQUEZ will play alongside Lowry at times to take ball-handling pressure off of him . . . LOUIS WILLIAMS should be closer to 100 percent in his second season off ACL surgery, though he's looking at a fourth guard role in Toronto. FORWARDS: AMIR JOHNSON will lead the rotation at the 4, providing rim protection, rebounding and hustle baskets . . . He's streaky, but uber dunker TERRENCE ROSS is reinventing himself as a three-point shooter . . . Stretch 4 PATRICK PATTERSON has added a corner three to supplement a below-the-rim game . . . TYLER HANSBROUGH's spastic style is a thing of beauty . . . JAMES JOHNSON returns to Toronto. He's more versatile than his doughy frame would suggest . . . Undersized big CHUCK HAYES will throw his weight around for 15 minutes a night . . . Draft night stunner BRUNO CABOCLO is likely headed for the D-League . . . Ditto DeANDRE DANIELS . . . Not too long ago multiple teams fought over LANDRY FIELDS, but those days are long gone. CENTERS: JONAS VALANCIUNAS still has to add some nuance to his game (such as making physical contact with a defender when he sets a screen) if he's going to get full-time minutes. But the big upside is still there . . . LUCAS NOGUEIRA, a 2013 first-rounder picked up from Atlanta, gives them a rim protector . . . GREG STIEMSMA was added in early September to provide depth at the center position. |

*Rockets-Raptors Preview* =========================
Houston (49-23) at Toronto (43-30), 7:30 p.m. EDT
It's unlikely that Kyle Lowry will play Monday night for the Toronto Raptors, who may be better off without him since he has never defeated the Houston Rockets since leaving that club.
The Raptors will at least catch a break since they won't have to face Dwight Howard.
The Rockets have dropped their last seven visits to Toronto and plan to rest Howard in this one as they seek a fifth straight win.
Lowry, second on the team with 17.9 points per game, has missed four of the last five contests with back spasms. Coach Dwane Casey had no update on his status at Sunday's practice.
The point guard played for Houston from 2009-12 before being traded to Toronto, which is 0-3 against the Rockets when Lowry faces them and 2-0 since he joined the team when he does not.
The two wins are part of this seven-game home win streak in the series dating to a 114-100 loss March 16, 2007.
Howard had 11 points and 10 rebounds in 19 minutes in his third game back from a right knee injury in Sunday's 99-91 win at Washington. Coach Kevin McHale said before it that Howard would either play Sunday or Monday, but not both days of the back-to-back set.
"It's nice to win the games, but it would be really nice to get healthy" said McHale, who also noted that guard Pat Beverley could miss the rest of the season. "That's our biggest thing."
Houston is also without Terrence Jones, out with a partially collapsed lung.
Howard's absence means Toronto (43-30) will focus its defensive effort on James Harden, who leads the NBA with 727 free-throw attempts. Harden is averaging 31.5 points in this win streak with 24 on Sunday.
Casey said James Johnson did a good job in helping limit Harden to 20 points in Toronto's 98-76 loss at Houston on Feb. 21. The coach said Johnson is one of several defenders who will take on the challenge this time.
"If you make a mental mistake, he'll make you pay," said Casey about Harden. "Once he sees it go through the hole, it just becomes easier and easier and easier for him so we gotta give him different looks, different matchups, put him in different situations because that's the only way you can stop him."
Toronto clinched the Atlantic Division with Friday's 94-83 home victory over the Los Angeles Lakers. Jonas Valanciunas scored 19 points and Lou Williams added 18.
"It's a lot more that we need to do," forward DeMar DeRozan said. "Get in the playoffs, win games in the playoffs, look forward, keep moving forward and not just think one game or one round."
The Rockets (50-23) reached the 50-win plateau for the second straight season Sunday by enjoying a 53-43 rebounding edge and limiting the Wizards to 38.7 percent shooting. They improved to 22-6 against East foes for the NBA's second-best record.
Houston is in a tight race with Memphis in the Southwest Division. Sunday's win helped Toronto move 2 1/2 games ahead of Washington in the race for home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
