|
| | | NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: This offense will belong to ERIC GORDON. He'll get over the fact that the Hornets matched his offer from Phoenix, and as long as his surgically-repaired knee holds up, he's one of the most complete young scorers in the NBA . . . The Hornets reached for AUSTIN RIVERS with the 10th pick because Monty Williams wants to coach him and thinks he can be an NBA point guard. Rivers has the handle, but his athleticism is ordinary and, more importantly, he has never shown a PG mentality at any level . . . GREIVIS VASQUEZ is the closest thing to a true point guard on this roster. He'll see solid minutes assuming Rivers' adjustment is a tough one . . . Well-rounded ROGER MASON JR. will also provide point guard depth . . . XAVIER HENRY hasn't lived up to his reputation as a shooter, but the Hornets can be patient with him . . . Rookie BRIAN ROBERTS has had a strong enough preseason to likely earn a roster spot. FORWARDS: ANTHONY DAVIS should step right in as a starter. His offensive game is further along than he gets credit for, and on the defensive end he's an absolute force from the basket out to the perimeter . . . He'll probably miss having Dwight Howard drawing in defenses, but RYAN ANDERSON has always been a very good three-point shooter. He and Davis are unique enough talents to share the court even if they're both power forwards . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU made some strides on the defensive end late last season, which is what will get him minutes under Williams. He's underwhelming on the offensive end . . . If HAKIM WARRICK couldn't succeed as Steve Nash's pick-and-roll partner, it seems unlikely he'll ever help in New Orleans . . . Rookie DARIUS MILLER is looking to establish some kind of role with the team . . . LANCE THOMAS is doubtful to earn a salary to pay off his jewelry debts. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ has always had the ability to protect the rim and does a decent job in space. Look for him to end up grabbing the bulk of minutes in the middle . . . JASON SMITH gives the Hornets a more offensive-minded option off the bench. | | MILWAUKEE: GUARDS: BRANDON JENNINGS benefitted from the arrival of Monta Ellis last year. He has the offense and system to thrive, and now needs to prove he can be efficient enough to be a star . . . MONTA ELLIS played second fiddle to Jennings last year, and really struggled to shoot the ball. The Bucks now play the kind of tempo he likes, but he'll have to adjust to playing off the ball more often . . . BENO UDRIH won't see a ton of action off the bench considering Jennings and Ellis play so many minutes. If a starter gets hurt, he could step in and hit a lot of threes . . . Second-rounder DORON LAMB has some upside as a future sixth man, but figures to ride the bench this year once his torn elbow ligament heals. FORWARDS: ERSAN ILYASOVA should finally get some respect from Skiles after starring down the stretch last year . . . MIKE DUNLEAVY re-emerged as a legitimate three-point threat, though he doesn't do much else . . . DREW GOODEN's role should shrink with Ilyasova stepping up and Sam Dalembert coming in . . . LUC RICHARD MBAH a MOUTE is coming off knee surgery, but he's improving as a rebounder and can play both forward spots off the bench . . . Rookie JOHN HENSON is a defensive stud and does enough as a screener to get decent minutes early . . . TOBIAS HARRIS was a Summer League star, but he's too much of a 'tweener to thrive in the NBA . . . EKPE UDOH provides defense and rebounding off the bench . . . LARRY SANDERS has potential, but this frontcourt is too crowded for him to make an impact. CENTERS: SAM DALEMBERT fell in and out of favor in Houston, but he's exactly what the Bucksneed as a defensive presence in the paint. Milwaukee has numerous players who can man the five in spots (Ekpe Udoh, Drew Gooden), but Dalembert is by far their best defensive option and should see big minutes . . . JOEL PRZYBILLA signed on in August to provide back-end depth on the pine. |

*Hornets-Bucks Preview* =======================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer
New Orleans (3-3) at Milwaukee (5-2), 8:30 p.m. EDT
While Chicago and Indiana try to overcome injuries to their top players, the Milwaukee Bucks have gotten out to the early lead in the Central Division.
They'll look to get off to their best eight-game start in 11 years by earning just their second victory in the last 13 meetings with the visiting New Orleans Hornets on Saturday night.
Milwaukee (5-2) had one of its better performances of the young season Wednesday, leading by as many as 32 points in a 99-85 victory over Indiana. The Bucks find themselves ahead of the division's projected top two as Chicago plays without former MVP Derrick Rose and Indiana continues on without star forward Danny Granger.
"We played some of our best defense in the first half and some of our best offense as well," coach Scott Skiles said. "We moved the ball well. Overall, it was a very well-played game."
Brandon Jennings and Monta Ellis scored 16 points each while Samuel Dalembert added 14 for the Bucks, who had a season-low six turnovers after committing a season-high 23 in their previous game.
"We realize that as a team we just needed to come in and be the aggressor from the beginning," Dalembert said.
Jennings had another solid effort after scoring a season-best 33 points and dishing out eight assists in Monday's win over Philadelphia that followed a 1-for-11 shooting performance in a loss to Boston last Saturday.
"We just got going and we didn't look back," Jennings said.
Milwaukee hasn't won six of its first eight games since taking seven of eight on its way to a 9-1 start to the 2001-02 campaign, but its recent history against New Orleans suggests it will have a tough time reaching that mark this season.
The Bucks have dropped 11 of the last 12 meetings and Jennings has shot 34.7 percent in five career games against the Hornets.
New Orleans, though, trailed by as many as 34 points in a 110-95 loss to Oklahoma City on Friday. Ryan Anderson scored a team-high 15 points off the bench and rookie Anthony Davis finished with eight points and a season high-tying 11 rebounds while shooting a dismal 4 of 14 for the Hornets (3-4), who have lost three of four.
New Orleans and Oklahoma City were involved in a shouting match at the end of the first half, though coach Monty Williams downplayed it.
"We're men, but you also have to be man enough to admit that we do goofy things when we compete," Williams said. "So we were just out there kind of yelling back and forth. Basically they were just kicking our butts."
Despite not having shooting guard Eric Gordon through most likely the end of December, the Hornets are off to a much better start than last season, when they began 4-23 even after winning their first two games.
General manager Dell Demps was awarded a multiyear contract extension Friday after making key offseason moves - including drafting Davis and Austin Rivers - to improve the club.
Demps traded Hakim Warrick to Charlotte for Matt Carroll on Tuesday, though Carroll has not reported to the team and may be bought out.
"We'll have a resolution on that in the coming days," Demps said.
Jennings scored 18 points but shot only 7 of 21 as New Orleans won 92-89 at Milwaukee in the most recent meeting Feb. 15.
