| | | DALLAS: GUARDS: DARREN COLLISON's jump shot might be shaky, but he can get into the lane at will. He'll be a much different look than Jason Kidd had been in Big D . . . O.J. MAYO becomes the second option in this offense. He'll have the ball in his hands a lot . . . VINCE CARTER will come off the bench. At this point, he's a three-point specialist, and not a very good one . . . DELONTE WEST will back up both guard spots. Don't be surprised if he overtakes Collison at some point . . . RODDY BEAUBOIS can heat up in an instant, but he has work to do to make this rotation . . . DAHNTAY JONES is roster filler . . . DOMINIQUE JONES enters the year on the roster bubble . . . JARED CUNNINGHAM will learn the point guard position watching from the bench as a rookie. FORWARDS: After a slow start last season, DIRK NOWITZKI looked like the Dirk of old in the second half of the year. He's still got something left in the tank, but it's still unclear if the swelling in his knee will require surgery, something that would shelve him for more than a month . . . SHAWN MARION is still an important cog in Carlisle's creative defensive gameplans, so he'll keep playing big minutes despite his dwindling offensive skills . . . ELTON BRAND is still relevant, even behind Nowitzki, because of his ability to play some center . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT will be in and out of the rotation again, but he's now relatively healthy and showed signs of being a serviceable rotation player a year ago . . . Rookie Jae CROWDER profiles as a potentially solid second-unit player, but he'll be buried on this depth chart. CENTERS: CHRIS KAMAN gives Dallas some offensive skill at center, but he's not exactly the defensive presence they've needed. He'll log the bulk of the minutes here, but there are going to be a handful of games where the Mavs have to sit him and go small for defensive purposes . . . 27-year-old rookie BERNARD JAMES could fill Ian Mahinmi's old role of a shot-blocker/fouler off the bench.
| | CLEVELAND: GUARDS: KYRIE IRVING is the real deal, a heady playmaker and near-elite shooter. He should emerge as the NBA's next great point guard this season . . . Rookie DION WAITERS has a chance to step right into the starting lineup. He can get to the rim and generally makes good choices withthe ball. The only thing holding him back is defense after playing college ball in Syracuse's lazy zone . . . C.J. MILES will reportedly start at either the two or three spot, but he really needs to find the range on his shot again for him to stick in the starting lineup . . . Gunning combo guard DANIEL GIBSON is looking like he'll be their sixth man . . . The Cavs are still trying to figure out their second unit. JEREMY PARGO figures to be Irving's backup, but DONALD SLOAN is a better defender and could eventually pass him for this role, which doesn't mean many minutes unless Irving gets injured again. FORWARDS: TRISTAN THOMPSON is trying to add a perimeter shot to his repertoire. Don't count on him becoming David West, but he should improve offensively to go along with his rebounding and shot-blocking . . . ALONZO GEE returns as the starting small forward, excelling on the defensive end, but without a polished enough offensive game to earn 35 minutes per night . . . OMRI CASSPI was in and out of the rotation late in the year as he battled knee issues. It's getting close to make-or-break time for him . . . JON LEUER is a solid stretch four who has a real chance at a rotation spot . . . SAMARDO SAMUELS reportedly dropped some weight in his effort to find some minutes . . . LUKE WALTON is an unofficial member of the coaching staff . . . Undrafted rookie KEVIN JONES could make some noise with his work on the offensive boards . . . LUKE HARANGODY is more of a D-League talent. CENTERS: ANDERSON VAREJAO's wrist should be 100 percent, and Sideshow Anderson should be the same relentless, double-double threat he's always been . . . Rookie TYLER ZELLER is a 7-footer with some nice offensive skills -- he can knock down a jump shot in the half court, and run the floor. He'll struggle to defend in space, but made a living drawing charges at UNC, and should be able to play 20+ minutes as a rookie. |

*Mavericks-Cavaliers Preview* =============================
By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer
Dallas (5-5) at Cleveland (2-6), 7:30 p.m. EDT
While the Dallas Mavericks have been anything but consistent, O.J. Mayo has been nothing but steady.
Coming off their most lopsided loss of the season, Mayo and the Mavericks try to get back on track Saturday when they visit a Cleveland Cavaliers team that has dropped four straight.
Mayo has been one of the few constants for Dallas (5-5), which has lost four of five after a 4-1 start.
The sharpshooter scored a team-high 19 points Friday and hit a pair of 3-pointers - increasing his league-leading total to 31 - but it hardly helped as the Mavericks lost 103-83 at Indiana.
Vince Carter and Darren Collison were the only other Dallas players in double figures, with 10 apiece.
The Mavericks will have to play better down the stretch if they hope to avoid falling to 1-5 on the road after being outscored 55-34 in the second half against the Pacers.
"We can't seem to sustain anything," said forward Shawn Marion, who scored two points after missing five games with a strained MCL. "We are continuing to have lapses, mental lapses."
Mayo, though, has been able to sustain his success on the offensive end. He's scored at least 18 points in each of the last eight contests, averaging 23.9 points on 51.6 percent shooting during that stretch.
With Mayo leading the way, the Mavericks are fifth in the league in scoring (100.5), eighth in field-goal percentage (45.7) and fourth in 3-point percentage (40.0) even after performing far below their season averages Friday.
That could spell trouble for the Cavaliers (2-6), who are 29th in the NBA in points allowed (104.8) and have given up 107.7 since a 94-84 season-opening victory over Washington last month.
After dropping the last four games on a six-game, 11-day road trip, the road-weary Cavaliers have had some time to work on their defensive woes since a 114-101 loss at Brooklyn on Tuesday night.
"I don't want to talk about the defense. There was nothing there defensively," coach Byron Scott said. "We've got to get more guys that are going to be competitive and passionate about the defensive end."
Scott's two best players, Anderson Varejao and Kyrie Irving, have done all they can to keep the team competitive on the offensive end.
Varejao, the league's second leading rebounder (13.7), finished with a career-high 35 points and 18 rebounds against the Nets - his fourth game with at least 15 boards.
Varejao had 17 points and 17 rebounds in Cleveland's 91-88 home victory over Dallas last season.
Irving, the top scoring point guard in the league at 24.3 points per game, had 20 in that victory. The reigning rookie of the year is coming off a career-high 34 points and eight assists against Brooklyn.
However, rookie Dion Waiters has slowed after a fast start with just 16 points on 6 of 22 shooting in the last two games.
The Cavaliers should get a boost Saturday with the return of their other first-round pick, Tyler Zeller, who has been cleared to play with a mask to protect a broken cheekbone suffered when he was elbowed in the face by Clippers center DeAndre Jordan on Nov. 6.
Zeller, who has missed four games, had 15 points in 24 minutes against Los Angeles - doubling his scoring total from his first three NBA contests.
