Manager: Andy Green (second season)
Who's new? RHP Jhoulys Chacin, RHP Trevor Cahill, RHP Jered Weaver
Who's gone? RHP Tyson Ross, RHP Brandon Morrow, IF/OF Alexi Amarista, OF Jon Jay, OF Oswaldo Arcia, IF/OF Adam Rosales
Projected lineup: LF Travis Jankowski (.245, 2 HR, 12 RBI, 30 SB), CF Manuel Margot (.243, 0, 3 in 10 games), 1B Wil Myers (.259, 28, 94, 28), 3B Yangervis Solarte (.286, 15, 71), RF Hunter Renfroe (.371, 4, 14 in 11 games), 2B Ryan Schmipf (.217, 20, 51), C Austin Hedges (.125, 0, 1 in eight games), SS Luis Sardinas (.287, 2, 13)
Rotation: RH Jered Weaver (12-12, 5.06 ERA with Angels), RH Jhoulys Chacin (6-8, 4.81 with Angels and Braves), LH Clayton Richard (3-3, 2.52), RH Trevor Cahill (4-4, 2.74 with Cubs), LH Christian Friedrich (5-12, 4.80) or RH Luis Perdomo (9-10, 5.71)
Key relievers: RH Brandon Maurer (0-5, 4.52, 13/19 SV), RH Carter Capps (did not pitch - Tommy John surgery), LH Ryan Buchter (3-0, 2.86), LH Brad Hand (4-4, 2.92), RH Kevin Quackenbush (7-7, 3.92), LH Keith Hessler (1-0, 3.38 with Diamondbacks and Padres), RH Jarred Cosart (0-3, 6.03 with Marlins and Padres)
Hot spots: Bullpen. San Diego's version of a position battle is Green fighting the temptation to bench a young player in the middle of a long slump. Since the Padres are playing for next year anyway, watching bullpen roles shake out might be someone's version of fun. Maurer, the incumbent closer, blew six of 19 save opportunities last year. Hand and Buchter are a pair of workhorse lefties who wouldn't look out of place on a contending team. The wild card is Capps, who is healthy after missing all of 2016 following Tommy John surgery. A year before, he struck out 58 batters in 31 innings with the Marlins.
Outlook: Look up 'rebuilding team' in the dictionary. With only eight active players on the books for more than $1 million ' excluding the retained salaries of Matt Kemp, Melvin Upton Jr. and several other former Padres ' San Diego will field MLB's lowest payroll. Theirs is the youngest roster in baseball too, with perhaps only two players who have turned 30 by Opening Day. Their best prospects are college-age kids in the low minors. So what's to like? Prospect watchers have been awaiting the arrival of Margot and Renfroe for years. The backup catcher, Christian Bethancourt, might pitch. Capps has an unusual delivery. The Padres also ran the bases aggressively under Green, and stolen bases are fun. How's that for a marketing slogan? | | TEXAS: 2016: 95-67, first place
Manager: Jeff Banister (third season)
Who's new? 1B Mike Napoli, 1B James Loney, INF Will Middlebrooks, RHP Andrew Cashner, RHP Tyson Ross, RHP Mike Hauschild
Who's gone? 1B Mitch Moreland, INF/OF Ian Desmond, OF/DH Carlos Beltran, RHP Derek Holland, RHP Colby Lewis, RHP Shawn Tolleson, RHP Lucas Harrell
Projected lineup: CF Carlos Gomez (.231, 13 HR, 53 RBI, 18 SB in 118 games with Astros and Rangers), DH Shin-Soo Choo (.242, 7, 17, 6 in 48 games), 3B Adrian Beltre (.300, 32, 104), 1B Mike Napoli (.239, 34, 101 with Indians), 2B Rougned Odor (.271, 33, 88, 14 SB), C Jonathan Lucroy (.292, 24, 81 with Brewers and Rangers), RF Nomar Mazara (.266, 20, 64), SS Elvis Andrus (.302, 8, 69, 24 SB), LF Jurickson Profar (.239, 5, 20) or Ryan Rua (.258, 8, 22, 9 SB)
Rotation: LH Cole Hamels (15-5, 3.32 ERA), RH Yu Darvish (7-5, 3.42 in 17 games), LH Martin Perez (10-11, 4.39), RH A.J. Griffin (7-4, 5.07), RH Andrew Cashner (5-11, 5.25 with Padres and Marlins)
Key relievers: RH Sam Dyson (3-2, 2.43, 38/43 SV), RH Matt Bush (7-2, 2.48), RH Jeremy Jeffress (27/28 SV with Brewers and Rangers), RH Tony Barnette (7-3, 2.09), LH Alex Claudio (4-1, 2.79), RH Keone Kela (5-1, 6.09)
Hot spots: Designated hitter and left field. Choo, Napoli and Joey Gallo are all candidates to DH. Gallo, a perennial prospect with prodigious power, can make it interesting by seizing his first-ever Opening Day roster spot. Otherwise Napoli (a first baseman) and Choo (an outfielder) can switch off as needed. Moving Desmond to the outfield was successful enough last year that the Rangers are taking a similar approach with Profar. The oft-injured 24-year-old will try to break camp as a left fielder, platooning with Rua.
Outlook: Coming off back-to-back division titles, the Rangers begin 2017 with a weakened farm system and the footsteps of the Astros and Mariners passing them by ' or at least catching up. There's still a lot to like here. Napoli was a huge bargain on a $6 million contract following his 34-homer season in Cleveland. He'll join Beltre and Odor to form a dangerous middle of the order. Darvish is entering his first full season back from Tommy John surgery, and he and catcher Lucroy are entering their long-awaited walk years. This isn't the deepest roster in the AL but it's capable of winning another division title if its stars can avoid the disabled list. |
| | Rangers' Perez hopes to get well vs. Padres
ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Texas Rangers and San Diego Padres are each looking for a spark from their rotation. Texas hopes it can finally get one from left-hander Martin Perez (1-5, 4.06 ERA), who is off to a dreadful start heading into his first career appearance against the Padres on Thursday. The Padres are hoping a rotation switch is just the ticket for success as they look to avoid their third straight loss to the Rangers. San Diego has flipped its rotation, going with left-hander Clayton Richard (2-4, 4.87 ERA) instead of right-hander Jhoulys Chacin to get a lefty against the Rangers. Chacin will start Friday at the Chicago White Sox. Texas is hitting only .192 against left-handed pitching this year. Hitting against Perez hasn't been an issue for any team this year. Perez comes into the start having lost four consecutive starts, which matches the longest losing streak of his career. He's also tied for the American League lead with five losses. While losses don't tell the story about a pitcher, it isn't hard to figure out that Perez is struggling just by looking at his numbers. Opponents over the last four games are hitting .326 against him. His ERA in those starts is 5.49 and he has pitched only 21 1/3 innings during that span. Ugly numbers indeed, but Perez is confident that he can get things turned around starting Thursday. "I'm feeling good," said Perez, who is 4-5 with a 4.60 ERA in interleague play. "My arm is good. I don't have a good record right now, but it's coming. If I continue to feel like how I feel right now, I can go 200 innings and make my 33 starts. That's my goal right now. I want to give my team a chance to win every time." One area Perez said he feels better about is his command. His last outing -- a 5-1 loss at Seattle -- marked the first start for Perez this year that he didn't walk a batter. He plans to attack the strike zone Thursday. "I'm not going to walk anybody," Perez said. "I'm going to throw the ball in the middle, and if they hit the ball, good. If not, I get the outs." Richard wouldn't mind a good start Thursday, either. He was 2-2 after four starts but his ERA has gone from 3.04 to 4.87 since then. He allowed five runs in five innings in his last start, a 10-2 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Facing the Rangers may be just what Richard needs, at least that's what manager Andy Green is hoping. "Everybody's healthy, everybody's fine," Green said. "It's more matchup related. If you flip them, you get a .200 OPS advantage on each club. This Texas team has traditionally struggled a little bit more with left-handed pitching this season than right-handed, and vice versa in Chicago." While Texas struggles against lefties, that hasn't been the case against Richard. He has faced the Rangers five times, including one start. He has a 7.36 ERA in those outings, but he does have 11 strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings. But the numbers say Richard is due. Green said he thinks that's the case, too. "Hopefully we're putting guys in positions to succeed and give us a better chance to win both ballgames," Green said. |
