Key relievers: LH Zach Britton (2-1, 0.54, 47/47 SV), RH Brad Brach (10-4, 2.05), RH Darren O'Day (3-1, 3.77), RH Mychal Givens (8-2, 3.13), LH Donnie Hart (0-0, 0.49), LH Vidal Nuno (1-1, 3.53 with Mariners)
Hot spots: Fifth starter and bullpen. A shoulder injury in camp left 16-game winner Chris Tillman in doubt for opening day. That opened the floodgates for a pair of competitions that are somewhat intertwined, since the Orioles value long relievers more than perhaps any team. Wright and Wilson, who shuttled between the bullpen and the rotation last season, are the top candidates for the final rotation job. Aquino is a candidate to start or relieve. Logan Verrett, Richard Bleier and Zach Stewart are all potential long men. Keep an eye on Lee, a 24-year-old lefty who missed most of last season with a lat strain.
Outlook: Boston landed the biggest trade chip of the winter and Baltimore couldn't (or didn't try to) acquire the number-one starter it badly needed. When the dust settled, the Orioles look like another 80-something win team that will lean on its organizational depth to overachieve. Machado is already one of the five best players in the game, and at 24 his prime years might still lie ahead. Only three teams in history have had three 40-home run hitters, but Machado, Davis and Trumbo are capable of making it four. Expect some high-scoring games: the Orioles' outfield earned low marks on defense last year, while their starting rotation is iffy at best. Bridging the gap to closer Britton will be key.
WASHINGTON:
Manager: Dusty Baker (second season)
Who's new? CF Adam Eaton, C Matt Wieters, 1B Adam Lind, LHP Enny Romero, RHP Joe Blanton
Who's gone? CF Ben Revere, C Wilson Ramos, RHP Lucas Giolito, RHP Mat Latos, LHP Sean Burnett, RHP Mark Melancon, LHP Marc Rzepczynski, RHP Yusmeiro Petit
Projected lineup: CF Adam Eaton (.284, 14 HR, 59 RBI, 14 SB with White Sox), SS Trea Turner (.342, 13, 40, 33), 2B Daniel Murphy (.347, 25, 104), RF Bryce Harper (.243, 24, 86, 21 SB), 3B Anthony Rendon (.270, 20, 85), LF Jayson Werth (.244, 21, 69), 1B Ryan Zimmerman (.218, 15, 46) or Adam Lind (.239, 20, 58 with Mariners), C Matt Wieters (.243, 17, 66 with Orioles)
Rotation: RH Max Scherzer (20-7, 2.96 ERA), RH Tanner Roark (16-10, 2.83), LH Gio Gonzalez (11-11, 4.57), RH Stephen Strasburg (15-4, 3.60), RH Joe Ross (7-5, 3.43)
Key relievers: RH Shawn Kelley (3-2, 2.64), RH Joe Blanton (7-2, 2.48), RH Blake Treinen (4-1, 2.28), LH Sammy Solis (2-4, 2.41), RH Trevor Gott (0-0, 1.50), LH Oliver Perez (2-3, 4.95), LH Enny Romero (2-0, 5.91 with Rays)
Hot spots: First base and closer. Zimmerman posted a career-low .642 OPS last season and was often spelled by left-handed hitter Clint Robinson. Now 32, Zimmerman must prove he's worthy of regular playing time. Robinson and free-agent pickup Lind are next in line. The ninth inning could be a committee job too, though it's never been the Nationals' preferred method. After Kenley Jansen spurned D.C. for less money in L.A., their choices were limited. Kelley and Blanton have never closed in a combined 20 seasons in the majors, but both were stalwart set-up men last season. Joe Nathan and his 377 career saves are also in camp on a minor-league deal.
Outlook: Trading former top prospect Lucas Giolito to the White Sox for Eaton signaled the Nationals' championship ambitions. Their five-game loss to the Dodgers last October marked the third time in five years they've fallen just short of the NLCS. Washington begins the season with some familiar weapons ' a dangerous heart of the lineup, an experienced bench and exceptional starting pitching. Eaton is a huge upgrade over Revere at the plate, but Wieters will be pressed to replace Ramos' 3.5 wins above replacement (via FanGraphs). Failing to sign a marquee closer could prove fatal if Kelley, Nathan or someone else can't hold down the ninth inning.
PREVIEW
Bundy tries to give O's series victory over Nats

WASHINGTON -- Dylan Bundy, who faces the Washington Nationals on Thursday, is finally arriving as a legitimate frontline starting pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles.

Bundy was a first-round pick and the fourth overall selection by the Orioles out of an Oklahoma high school in 2011. He missed all of 2013 because of injury and didn't make the majors until 2016, when he went 10-6 with a 4.02 ERA in 36 games (14 starts).

Bundy (5-1, 2.17 ERA) will aim for his eighth consecutive quality start in the series finale against Washington and right-hander A.J. Cole (1-0, 1.50) on Thursday at Nationals Park.

It will be the finale of a home-and-home series that began Monday in Baltimore and continued Wednesday in the nation's capital with a 7-6 victory by the Nationals in the bottom of the ninth.

Now Washington will try to even the season series at 2-2 against the best Baltimore pitcher.

"I think he is a great pitcher and has a lot of room for improvement," Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy said of Bundy. "He is young, and he has a good head on his shoulder. He has a very high ceiling, if you will."

Bundy, 24, is the first Orioles pitcher to make seven quality starts to begin the season since 1974, when left-hander Ross Grimsley did so.

No current Washington hitter has more than three career at-bats against Bundy. Third baseman Anthony Rendon has a homer in three at-bats against Bundy.

Cole is 0-1 with a 5.15 ERA in one career start against the Orioles. He gave up five hits (two homers) and four runs in seven innings against Baltimore last season.

He made his first appearance of the season Saturday in Philadelphia, and he gave up six hits and one run in six innings to earn the victory.

"I had a plan on each guy," Cole said. "The defensive behind me really helped me."

He will face an Orioles team that hit three homers in the first inning Monday in Baltimore against Washington starter Gio Gonzalez in a 6-4 victory. The Orioles then came back and won 5-4 in 12 innings on Tuesday night before the Nationals scored three in the ninth to win Wednesday.

"They are all good hitters. I will watch tonight and see how (Stephen) Strasburg pitches them," Cole said before the Wednesday game. "You have to adjust to each hitter."

Cole pitched in three games (one start) in 2015 as a rookie, and he made eight starts last season for the Nationals. The Florida native was 1-2 with a 5.17 ERA last year.

Bundy has faced Washington once in his career, getting a win last August as he allowed three hits and two runs in six innings.

The Orioles are trying to win the season series for the sixth year in a row.

Washington has the worst bullpen ERA in the National League but could get right-handed relievers Shawn Kelley (lower back strain) and Koda Glover (left hip impingement) back off the disabled list soon.

Kelley threw between 20 and 25 pitches in a simulated game Wednesday, while Glover tossed a scoreless inning for Double-A Harrisburg in a rehab outing against Erie. Kelley could be ready to come off the disabled list Friday.

"He was very happy," Washington manager Dusty Baker said of Kelley. "I got a good report on Koda. He was not that far off (from a return). Both of them could be back (soon), possibly this weekend."
