| | | SAN DIEGO: HITTING: This was by far the worst lineup in the National League in runs (3.66 per game), HR (91), and OPS (.653). 1B JESUS GUZMAN had 44 RBI in just 247 at-bats thanks to a 1.094 OPS with RISP. 1B YONDER ALONSO, the key piece of the Mat Latos trade, will play first every day, moving Guzman to a back-up role. OF CAMERON MAYBIN used his speed to steal 40 bases and score 82 runs. OF CARLOS QUENTIN was acquired from the White Sox and will provide much-needed power in the middle of the batting order when he returns to the field sometime in late April/early May after having knee surgery. Slugger KYLE BLANKS will fill the void. In 420 career at-bats, he has 20 homers, but also has a .219 BA and 152 strikeouts. SS JASON BARTLETT had a disappointing first season in San Diego, hitting only two home runs in 554 at-bats and posting a pathetic .615 OPS as the team's No. 2 hitter in the lineup. Mediocre OF WILL VENABLE (.705 OPS) would not start for any other team in the majors. 3B CHASE HEADLEY batted .289 with a .374 OBP, but failed to provide any power from the three-hole. Oft-injured C NICK HUNDLEY had an .824 OPS and 9 HR in half a season. SS ORLANDO HUDSON batted just .246 with 92 strikeouts and just 31 walks. STARTING PITCHING: This young staff finished sixth in the majors with a 3.62 ERA. TIM STAUFFER struggled to pitch outside of spacious Petco Park, posting a 4.95 ERA and 1.39 WHIP on the road (2.57 ERA, 1.13 WHIP at home). Two starters both underwent surgery on their throwing shoulders last summer, but are expected to be ready for the start of the season. Lefty CLAYTON RICHARD had just 53 K and 38 BB in 99.2 innings, but he posted a strong 2.30 ERA and 1.11 WHIP at home last year. The 2011 campaign was the year to judge whether EDINSON VOLQUEZ was all the way back from major arm surgery. Well, the jury's in and the verdict isn't kind. The move to San Diego can only cure so much. Right-hander DUSTIN MOSELEY enjoyed his first season in the NL, posting career-best marks in ERA (3.30) and WHIP (1.28). But like Richard, his 64 K and 36 BB in 120 innings were unimpressive. CORY LUEBKE began 2011 in the bullpen, but was moved the rotation, which is where he'll stay in 2012. In 17 starts last year, he shined with a 3.31 ERA and 111 K in 100.2 IP. RELIEF PITCHING: For the first time since 2008, somebody other than Heath Bell will close games for the Padres. HUSTON STREET will certainly benefit from the move to hitter haven Coors Field to pitcher-friendly Petco Park. Street had a 4.20 home ERA in three seasons in Colorado, while posting a stellar 2.59 ERA on the road. If Street gets hurt, the two leading candidates for the closer role are LUKE GREGERSON and ERNESTO FRIERI. Gregerson is the more consistent pitcher of the two, but Frieri throws harder than Gregerson and has a stellar 11.1 strikeout rate in his three-year career. | | SEATTLE: HITTING: C/DH JESUS MONTERO was brought over from the Yankees to hit in the heart of the order. At age 22, his offensive potential is scary. OF ICHIRO SUZUKI is entering the twilight of his career, but he might still have another .300 season left. 2B DUSTIN ACKLEY is the kind of line-drive hitter who fits well in Safeco, but he needs to catch up to MLB pitching. 1B JUSTIN SMOAK has disappointed, but he's making strides and has 30-HR upside. OF CASPER WELLS could play everyday. He won't hit for average, but has the power Seattle needs. MIKE CARP figures to at least grab early at-bats against righties. He'll strike out, but has lots of power. OF FRANKLIN GUTIERREZ is out for at least a month with a pectoral injury, but will reclaim his starting gig based on his defense. Seattle would love to see OF MICHAEL SAUNDERS step up to replace Gutierrez, but he's shown no signs of being able to handle MLB pitching. C MIGUEL OLIVO still has solid power, but he's an all-or-nothing hitter. 3B CHONE FIGGINS isn't quite done, but he's close. He'll have to battle line-drive hitting KYLE SEAGER for a job. SS BRENDAN RYAN will stick around for defense, but his bat is barely good enough for a regular gig. STARTING PITCHING: FELIX HERNANDEZ had a touch of bad luck last year, but he's one of the few pitchers in baseball who's a lock for 200 strikeouts. JASON VARGAS just keeps throwing strikes and letting his defense make plays. He'll get by fine again in spacious Safeco. BLAKE BEAVAN doesn't have a strikeout pitch, but he'll make few mistakes and get some outs thanks to a strong defense. HECTOR NOESI, who also came over from New York with Montero, isn't a big strikeout pitcher, but has good control and is savvy enough to get his shot in Seattle's rotation this year. 37-year-old journeyman KEVIN MILLWOOD will fill out the fifth spot in the rotation after a solid spring. Top prospect DANNY HULTZEN could break into the bigs in 2012. The lefty has the polish of a big leaguer right now, though his ceiling is more good-not-great. RELIEF PITCHING: Like many rebuilding teams, the Mariners will continue to shop their closer. BRANDON LEAGUE will pick up saves in Seattle, but he's more of a groundball pitcher than a strikeout artist. He'd likely be ticketed for a set-up role elsewhere. If League is traded, the closer role is wide open. SHAWN KELLEY came back from Tommy John surgery late last year and looked as good as ever. If he picks up where he left off last year, he'd be an obvious choice for ninth inning duties. CHANCE RUFFIN, part of the Doug Fister trade, has a strong minor-league track record. He could carve out a big role in this bullpen if he can improve his command. |

*Padres-Mariners Preview* =========================
By MATT BEARDMORE STATS Writer
San Diego (22-26) at Seattle (20-29), 4:10 p.m. EDT
Now that the Seattle Mariners' losing streak is over, former San Diego Padre Aaron Harang hopes his struggles are also about to end.
Harang could be pitching for his spot in the rotation Monday in the start of a four-game series with the Padres, beginning with two contests at Safeco Field.
Losers of eight straight heading into Sunday's matchup with AL West-leading Texas, the Mariners (21-29) won 4-3 in 13 innings with Jason Bay delivering the game-winning single. He was robbed of a game-winning homer in the 11th by David Murphy after Raul Ibanez' solo shot tied the game to lead off that frame.
"It feels great. Not just for me but for everybody," Bay said after helping Seattle end its longest slide since a 17-game stretch July 6-26, 2011. "That was a big sigh of relief for a lot of people."
The Mariners will conclude their five-game homestand with two against the Padres (22-27) before this series shifts to San Diego for games on Wednesday and Thursday.
The Padres, who have dropped four of five following Sunday's 6-5 loss at Arizona, won five of six in this matchup a year ago, including their first sweep in Seattle from June 12-14.
Harang (1-5, 8.58 ERA), 1-2 with a 6.43 ERA in three home starts, is trying to rebound from a pair of road losses. The right-hander, pitching for the first time in two weeks due to lower back stiffness, was charged with seven runs and a season-high nine hits in 3 2-3 innings of Tuesday's 12-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels.
"About the only good thing that came out of tonight was the fact that the back wasn't an issue," he said.
Another rough outing from Harang, who'll make his 300th start, could force manager Eric Wedge's hand in making a switch with his rotation.
"You can't keep putting this kind of heat on the bullpen," Wedge told the Mariners' official website.
Harang, who finished 14-7 with a 3.64 ERA for San Diego in 2011, went 2-1 with a 3.09 ERA in six starts against the Padres last season while with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
San Diego is expected to push back Edinson Volquez and remove Clayton Richard (0-4, 8.54) from the disabled list to start Monday. The left-hander was placed on the DL with an intestinal virus May 5, a day after permitting seven runs - five earned - in 3 2-3 innings of an 8-1 loss to Arizona.
Richard, a loser of three consecutive starts, has since been working on improving his arm slot at Triple-A Tucson, where he went 0-1 with a 2.25 ERA in 12 innings.
Richard has won his last five interleague starts after yielding three earned runs over 6 2-3 innings in a 9-5 home win over Seattle on June 22.
He could get his first look at Kendrys Morales, who went 6 for 14 with a homer, two doubles and a team-best five RBIs in the three-game set against Texas. Morales or Michael Morse could be at first base Monday if Justin Smoak sits out a second game with a strained oblique.
Left fielder Carlos Quentin should be the Padres' DH in at least one of the next two games. He's 6 for 11 with a homer, three doubles, two RBIs in the last three contests. Quentin's one hit in six at-bats off Harang left the park.
San Diego has won six of eight in Seattle.
