| |  | SAN FRANCISCO: HITTING: The Giants scored the second-fewest runs in the majors. But the additions of OF MELKY CABRERA (.305 BA, 18 HR, 87 RBI, 102 runs) and OF ANGEL PAGAN (32 SB) at the top of the order will certainly help. C BUSTER POSEY's surgically repaired ankle should be fully healed for the start of the season, and the 25-year-old's .368 OBP is certainly needed. 3B PABLO SANDOVAL was the team's best hitter in 2011 (.315 BA, 23 HR, 70 RBI) and was the only legitimate power source. The right side of the infield consists of veteran players past their prime. 1B AUBREY HUFF had his worst season, hitting .246 with 12 HR, but the 35-year-old will continue to bat in the middle of the lineup. 2B FREDDY SANCHEZ, 34, missed 50+ games for the third straight year as he suffered a torn labrum. SS BRANDON CRAWFORD has a slick glove but he's not close to being a legitimate major-league hitter (.204 career BA). OF BRANDON BELT, 23, has future star potential, but will be in a reserve role. OF NATE SCHIERHOLTZ (.756 OPS) provides a reliable bat in right field.
STARTING PITCHING: San Francisco ranked second in the majors in ERA (3.28), strikeouts (5.4 per game) and Opp. BA (.237). TIM LINCECUM was the ace once again with a 2.74 ERA and 220 strikeouts, but carried a sub-.500 record (13-14). Including playoffs, Lincecum has thrown an average of 230 innings per season since 2008. MATT CAIN also had a phenomenal year, carting a 2.88 ERA, team-best 1.08 WHIP and fanning 179 batters. He allowed only nine home runs in 221.2 innings of work. 22-year-old lefty MADISON BUMGARNER had a solid first full season, finishing with a 3.21 ERA, and a 4.2 K-to-BB ratio (191 strikeouts, 46 walks). RYAN VOGELSONG was an unbelievable story, returning to the majors for the first time since 2006 and going 13-7 with a 2.71 ERA. Although he's 34, his arm has plenty of innings left. BARRY ZITO will likely earn the final spot in the rotation as prospect ERIC SURKAMP gets more seasoning in Triple-A. Zito posted a career-worst 5.87 ERA while Surkamp carted a 1.84 WHIP in six starts.
RELIEF PITCHING: The success of the San Francisco bullpen hinges on BRIAN WILSON, who had a down year (1.47 WHIP, 54 K, 31 BB) because of elbow problems. Surgery was not required for his ailment, so expect a nice bounce-back season from this elite closer. If Wilson gets injured again, SERGIO ROMO could get called upon in the late innings. But even if he doesn't save a game, he still has plenty of value as a set-up man, notching a gaudy 13.1 strikeout rate and 0.71 WHIP last year. In 48 innings, he struck out 70 batters and only walked five. JEREMY AFFELDT is the top lefty in the Giants pen. He notched a strong 2.63 ERA and also tallied a career-best 1.15 WHIP last year. | | OAKLAND: HITTING: 2B JEMILE WEEKS may not be a legitimate .300 hitter, but he's still the best option they have at the leadoff spot. C KURT SUZUKI seemingly hits as many line outs as anyone in baseball. He has a solid bat for a catcher and qualifies as a middle-of-the-order option in Oakland. OF JOSH REDDICK is more of a line-drive hitter than a 25-HR guy, and he doesn't yet have the plate discipline to approach .300. 1B BRANDON ALLEN is an all-or-nothing hitter, but his potential for much-needed power should be enough for him to beat out DARIC BARTON. SS CLIFF PENNINGTON has quietly developed into a serviceable regular. With 3B SCOTT SIZEMORE out for the season with a torn ACL, either ERIC SOGARD or JOSH DONALDSON will win the job at third base. Neither player has reached 80 career at-bats yet. Highly-coveted Cuban OF YOENIS CESPEDES inked a four-year deal with Oakland, and will be expected to produced in the heart of the lineup immediately. OF COLLIN COWGILL is undersized, but has shown impressive power in the minors. The DH spot will fall to Allen when Barton is in the lineup. When he's not, it will be filled by such Quadruple-A types as KILA KA'AIHUE and CHRIS CARTER.
STARTING PITCHING: BRANDON McCARTHY reclamation project worked out nicely. He's an injury risk, but when healthy he's one of baseball's better middle-of-the-rotation arms. BARTOLO COLON pitched better than expected with the Yankees last year (7.4 K/9, 4.00 ERA), and should perform just as well in his new spacious ballpark. DALLAS BRADEN (shoulder) and BRETT ANDERSON (elbow) are both question marks after major surgeries. Braden's return date has been pushed back to early May, while Anderson will might not take the hill until June. The jewel of the Trevor Cahill trade, hard-throwing righty JARROD PARKER has a chance to make a big impact if his arm is recovered from 2009 Tommy John surgery. The Gio Gonzalez trade landed Oakland TOMMY MILONE and BRAD PEACOCK, both of whom are coming off impressive minor-league seasons. They'll compete for rotation spots this spring. TYSON ROSS could get a few starts, but he's gotten very hittable over the past year. They're in no hurry to start the arbitration clock of top prospect SONNY GRAY, but he should make some late-season starts.
RELIEF PITCHING: With Andrew Bailey gone, righty GRANT BALFOUR (2.47 ERA, 1.03 WHIP) will get the first chance to close games. Though his occasional bouts with command issues make him a risk. If Balfour falters, BRIAN FUENTES will get the next look because of his ninth-inning experience and strong second half of 2011 . . . Long a favorite inside the organization, injury-prone righty JOEY DEVINE has long been considered a future closer and should get some late-innings duties. The highest upside option for a future closer is 25-year-old righty FAUTINO DE LOS SANTOS. He has overpowering stuff but his command comes and goes. |

The Oakland Athletics hope the confidence they've gained during their current surge will help them turn it around against their Bay Area rivals.
Coming off a stellar road trip, the A's try to reverse their recent fortunes against the visiting San Francisco Giants on Monday.
Oakland (28-23) is 47-45 versus San Francisco during the regular season, but the A's have seen their dominance of the series come to an end in the past five years. They've dropped 17 of the last 26 meetings and have not won a season series from the Giants (28-22) since 2008.
San Francisco took two of three at both ballparks in 2012 and also snapped a six-game slide in Oakland.
With each team playing well after both won 94 games last season and the Giants a World Series title, the 2013 installment could be more intense than the others.
These four games will be the only matchups between the teams this year, with two contests in Oakland followed by two in San Francisco on Wednesday and Thursday.
"I've often said that people in the Bay Area, it's an exciting time in the baseball season for them, because everyone's watching," A's manager Bob Melvin told the team's official website.
"You can say all you want that it's just another team, another four games, and it is another team and another four games, but in the Bay Area it takes on more importance than that," he added.
"Everyone's watching. Stands are packed, whether it's our place or their place. It's a raucous crowd, our side and their side. It's kind of cool."
The A's have won eight of nine overall and capped a 5-1 trip to Texas with a three-game sweep of Houston. Rookie Nate Freiman homered and had three RBIs while Yeonis Cespedes added two hits in a 6-2 win Sunday.
Oakland scored 23 runs against the Astros.
Cespedes has recorded at least a hit in eight straight games, but went 2 for 12 with seven strikeouts at home against the Giants last year.
San Francisco scored 13 runs to win its last two versus Colorado after totaling a run in back-to-back losses to Washington and the Rockies. Brandon Belt hit a tiebreaking, two-run double in the fifth and Buster Posey added his seventh homer in a 7-3 victory Sunday.
Posey is batting .421 with two homers and five RBIs during a 10-game hitting streak. He's hit .308 with two home runs and seven RBIs over his last eight versus Oakland after going 1 for 12 in his first three.
San Francisco's Madison Bumgarner (4-2, 2.89 ERA) has been inconsistent in four May starts. In losing his first and third outings of the month, he allowed 14 runs and 16 hits in 10 2-3 innings. In each of the other two, the left-hander yielded a run and four hits over seven innings, most recently during a 2-1, 10-inning loss to Washington on Wednesday.
"He's an incredible pitcher," Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper told the Giants' official website. "He knows what he's doing out there, and the Giants are very lucky to have him."
Bumgarner allowed four runs and 11 hits, including two homers, in six innings of a 9-8 win at Oakland on June 23.
The A's Dan Straily (2-2, 5.73) makes his first appearance against the Giants after he allowed two hits without a walk in seven innings of a 1-0 victory at Texas on Tuesday.
"The best pitching performance we've seen out of him to date," manager Bob Melvin said of the right-hander, who allowed 11 runs and walked eight in 9 1-3 innings to lose his previous two starts. "I think he just gained confidence as the game went along. Early in the game, he's throwing strikes, he's getting outs, they're not hitting any balls hard really, and you just kind of grow from that."
