| |  | ATLANTA: HITTING: The Braves were 27th in the majors in steals last year, but that number should rise with a full season of speedster OF MICHAEL BOURN, who was acquired from Houston last July. OFs MARTIN PRADO and JASON HEYWARD comprise the corner outfield spots, and are both are looking to bounce back after disappointing, injury-riddled 2011 campaigns. 2B DAN UGGLA smacked a career-best 36 HR in his first year with Atlanta, his fifth straight 30-homer season. Steady veterans C BRIAN McCANN and 3B CHIPPER JONES comprise a solid middle of the lineup. McCann has four straight 20-HR, 70-RBI seasons, while Jones, who turns 40 in April, has a career .402 on-base percentage. 1B FREDDIE FREEMAN was the N.L.'s best offensive rookie last year, batting .282 with 21 HR and 76 RBI. The starting shortstop will be one of two highly-touted, 22-year-old prospects, TYLER PASTORNICKY or ANDRELTON SIMMONS.
STARTING PITCHING: Even with significant injuries to three starters, the Braves rotation still ranked ninth in the majors in ERA (3.73), thanks to TIM HUDSON posting a 3.22 ERA in 215 innings. The right-hander was lights-out at Turner Field again, going 10-4 with a 2.31 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. But he'll be out at least a month because of back problems. JAIR JURRJENS was outstanding through the end of July (12-3, 2.38 ERA), but a knee strain bothered him in August and shut him down for September. Although many teams inquired about Jurrjens in the offseason, it doesn't look like the Braves want to deal him just yet. TOMMY HANSON is another young star (25) that had to be shut down in early August due to a partially torn rotator cuff. His ERA was a career-worst 3.60, but he notched a career-best 9.8 K/9 rate. BRANDON BEACHY, also 25, posted a whopping 10.7 K/9 ratio with a respectable ERA (3.68) and WHIP (1.21). Atlanta is loaded with young pitchers, but expect MIKE MINOR (5-3, 4.14 ERA) and RANDALL DELGADO to start in the majors, with JULIO TEHERAN, who has the most upside of the trio, to begin 2012 in Triple-A.
RELIEF PITCHING: CRAIG KIMBREL exceeded all expectations last year, establishing himself as one of the best closers in the game. He struck out an eye-popping 14.8 batters per nine (127 K in 77 IP), and converted 46-of-54 (85%) save chances. Even though Kimbrel's job as a closer is probably locked down for the next decade, the Braves have two other great relievers, both lefties. JONNY VENTERS posted a 1.84 WHIP and .176 opponents' BA in 88 innings, and is next in line for saves (five in 2011) should Kimbrel suffer an injury. Fellow southpaw ERIC O'FLAHERTY had a 0.98 ERA (8 ER in 73.2 IP) and 32 holds, just three fewer than Venters. | | TORONTO: HITTING: SS YUNEL ESCOBAR brings a little pop and could score runs in bunches atop a solid lineup. OF JOSE BAUTISTA has simply been the best hitter in baseball the past two seasons. 1B ADAM LIND will have plenty of RBI chances, but his average stinks and he faded late last year. 3B BRETT LAWRIE will be a 30-30 candidate in his prime and he's a solid slugger already. Expect big power numbers but a painful average in C J.P. ARENCIBIA's sophomore season. OF COLBY RASMUS should have his head right this year and could see an uptick in power numbers. 2B KELLY JOHNSON improved his dreadful average after being traded to Toronto. He has great potential as a 20-20 candidate. DH EDWIN ENCARNACION raked at home last season and has the position flexibility to stay in the lineup every day. OF ERIC THAMES will start in left field. Thames has 15-15 potential. OF RAJAI DAVIS' speed makes him worthy of staying in the fourth outfielder role.
STARTING PITCHING: He's not really an ace, but RICKY ROMERO is a solid innings-eater at the front of the Jays' staff. He's a low-risk, low-reward starting pitcher. BRANDON MORROW's talent is intriguing. His mid-90s heat and deceptive slider lead to huge strikeout tallies, but also leads to a lot of gopher balls. Questionable conditioning was an issue for BRETT CECIL last year, as he gave up a whopping 37 HR between the majors and Triple-A. He seemed to straighten things out over the second half of last season. HENDERSON ALVAREZ's performance as a 21-year-old gives him an inside track for a rotation spot. He has intriguing upside. DUSTIN McGOWAN returned in September from a 38-month layoff to put himself in the mix for the rotation. His mid-90s gas is still there, giving him 175-K potential. KYLE DRABEK has great potential, but he was a disaster in 2011. He could not command his promising arsenal of pitches, and broke down mentally at times.
RELIEF PITCHING: SERGIO SANTOS has unhittable stuff, but will have to battle newcomer FRANCISCO CORDERO as Toronto's closer. Cordero's strikeout rate dropped down to a putrid 5.4 K/9 last year, but he showed great command with a stellar 1.02 WHIP. CASEY JANSSEN was Toronto's most improved pitcher in 2011. He has a sinking fastball, a pretty good K rate and performed quite well against the AL East last season. Prospect JOEL CARRENO, a starter in the minors, is a closer-in-waiting. He was impressive out of the pen after a late-August call-up, and averaged better than a strikeout per inning, albeit with shaky control, in the minors. |

Atlanta (30-18) at Toronto (20-29), 7:07 p.m. EDT
The Atlanta Braves' lengthy winning streak is over. The NL East leaders will look to bounce back by ending their longest interleague road skid.
Atlanta faces the Toronto Blue Jays and Mark Buehrle, the all-time interleague wins leader, in the opener of a four-game series Monday night.
After outscoring opponents 47-21 in winning eight in a row, Atlanta (30-19) fell 4-2 to the New York Mets on Sunday. The Braves allowed three eighth-inning runs after Dan Uggla hit a two-run shot in the previous inning - his third homer in six games.
The Braves can get back on track by stopping a five-game slide in AL parks. Their last interleague road series didn't go well, as they were outscored 25-7 in three losses to Detroit from April 26-28.
Atlanta has dropped eight of 10 in Toronto, but none of those games came in the four seasons prior to this one. The Braves have won eight of the past nine matchups, though Toronto took the latest one 12-4 on June 10.
Buehrle (1-3, 5.90 ERA), eyeing a 26th interleague victory, will face the Braves for the first time in a Blue Jays uniform. He went 1-2 with a 5.91 ERA in four starts against them last season while with Miami.
The left-hander is looking for his first win in eight starts, though he turned in an encouraging outing Wednesday in a 4-3, 10-inning victory over Tampa Bay, pitching seven innings and allowing two runs.
Toronto (21-29) has only lost once in his last four outings.
"Listen, I'd like to be 5-1 right now. I'm not, I'm 1-3," Buehrle said. "But as long as we're winning my starts, I'm going out there giving our team a chance to win, that's all I can ask for."
The Braves can't ask for much more from their rotation, which has posted a 1.66 ERA during the past nine games. That performance has been especially important with a bullpen that will be without Eric O'Flaherty and Jonny Venters for remainder of the season, and is waiting for the return of Jordan Walden and Luis Ayala.
Tim Hudson (4-3, 4.98) is the lone member of the rotation that has struggled lately, going 0-2 with an 8.56 ERA in his last three starts. The right-hander did manage to work around a 76-minute rain delay to pitch five innings Tuesday in a 5-4, 10-inning win over Minnesota, allowing two runs.
Hudson may have a good chance to get back on track Monday, as he's gone 11-3 with a 2.79 ERA in 16 starts against the Blue Jays.
Colby Rasmus, older brother of Braves rookie reliever Cory Rasmus, is 5 for 11 with a home run off Hudson.
Teammate Jose Bautista has gone 14 for 25 with two homers and five RBIs in the past six games. Bautista had a team-best two homers in three games against Atlanta in 2012.
The Braves lead the NL with 65 home runs, while Buehrle's 11 homers allowed are among the most in the major leagues.
