| | | SAN FRANCISCO: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - From every slot in a talented, experienced rotation to the back end of the bullpen and in between, to the starting fielders and the role players on the bench, it's hard to find a member of the San Francisco Giants pleased with his 2013 season.
A year after winning the World Series, the Giants finished 10 games under .500, third in the NL West and they missed the playoffs.
''We don't even have to have the conversation, a lot of the guys know it,'' right-hander Matt Cain said. ''We didn't pitch the way that we wanted to.''
As the Giants begin a new year, they will try to keep up with the big-spending Los Angeles Dodgers and regain the grip they had on the NL West when the club won World Series championships in 2010 and `12 - even if everybody expects the Dodgers to be the team to beat.
''You do try to reflect back and try to learn from what happened last year and how you can get better,'' manager Bruce Bochy said. ''You move forward, that's what we had to do. There are some things we'll talk about in the spring, mistakes that we made last year. Also, hopefully guys come in with an attitude, that they weren't happy with what happened the year before and want to get back on track.''
Buster Posey certainly doesn't want to spend too much time thinking about last season.
''That's probably how everybody feels. There's a bad taste in a lot of guys' mouths,'' Posey said. ''We want to come out and focus on winning ballgames.''
| | SAN DIEGO: SAN DIEGO (AP) - It's almost as if last season didn't end for the San Diego Padres.
The Padres go into 2014 trailing the Los Angeles Dodgers and with one of their starting pitchers already having arm trouble.
There had been a general air of optimism surrounding the Padres, who are coming off seasons of 91, 86 and 86 losses. Their rotation has been bolstered, as well as their player payroll.
Then came word late in spring training that newcomer Josh Johnson, penciled in as the No. 3 starter, is expected to be out four to five weeks after straining his right forearm.
That still leaves a projected rotation of Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross, Ian Kennedy and Eric Stults, with a number of pitchers to choose from to replace Johnson.
''I think we have the talent on the mound, through our 12 guys that are going to make our team, to pitch well,'' manager Bud Black said. ''There's a health component here like all teams. We've got keep our best players on the field.''
The Padres signed Johnson to an $8 million, one-year contact less than two months after he had bone spurs removed from his pitching elbow. He was 2-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 16 appearances last season with Toronto.
When Johnson returns, the Padres hope he and Ian Kennedy can return to their old form.
Kennedy was acquired from division rival Arizona at the trading deadline. He went 4-2 with a 4.24 ERA with San Diego after going 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 21 starts with the Diamondbacks. Johnson was an All-Star with the Marlins in 2009 and 2010, and led the NL with a 2.30 ERA in 2010.
The Padres will be tested right away. They open at home Sunday night against the defending NL West champion Dodgers and their $225 million payroll, led by ace Clayton Kershaw, himself a $215 million man. The Dodgers already sit atop the division after sweeping the Diamondbacks in a two-game series in Sydney.

*Giants-Padres Preview* =======================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer
San Francisco (10-6) at San Diego (7-9), 8:40 p.m. EDT
Tim Hudson will turn 39 years old in July and was coming off a major injury when the San Francisco Giants took a chance and signed him to a multiyear contract in the offseason.
The veteran is showing he still has plenty of solid innings left in his arm.
Hudson takes the mound as the visiting Giants look to get their offense back on track Saturday night against the San Diego Padres.
After his 2013 season ended in July with a fractured right ankle suffered while pitching for Atlanta, Hudson signed a two-year, $23 million contract with a San Francisco team looking to improve a pitching staff that finished near the bottom of the NL in ERA.
Hudson (2-0, 2.35 ERA) has been solid so far, pitching into the eighth inning in all three outings. He gave up four runs over 7 1-3 on Sunday before Brandon Crawford's 10th-inning homer gave the Giants a 5-4 win over Colorado.
The right-hander, though, was charged with two runs in the eighth that tied it.
"I would have been sick if we had lost this game because I felt like I had a pretty good game, and then in the eighth inning we were tied up," Hudson said.
The Giants have issued a major league-low 34 walks, and Hudson holds the season-opening franchise record by tossing 23 innings without one. Opponents are hitting .185 against him.
Hudson is 5-1 with a 1.75 ERA in his last eight starts against the Padres, who won Friday's series opener 2-1. It was the eighth straight one-run game for the Giants, their most since also having a run of eight in August 1910.
San Francisco (10-7) has a 1.42 ERA over the last four games but has scored seven runs. Brandon Belt's ninth-inning homer was all it could muster Friday.
Buster Posey and Michael Morse sat out for some rest. Posey is 1 for 18 over his last six, while Morse is 2 for 17 in that stretch.
Manager Bruce Bochy said they'll be play in this contest against San Diego (8-9), which has won six of nine.
Chris Denorfia has gone 2 for 4 in three straight games, and his solid performances are coming at a good time. Chase Headley hasn't been in the starting lineup for any of those contests due to a strained right biceps, and it's unclear how long he'll be out.
The Padres also have been getting some solid pitching, ranking near the top of the majors with a 2.78 ERA. That number could be even better if Eric Stults can get on track.
Stults (0-2, 5.52) gave up four runs and nine hits in five innings of a 5-4 win over the Rockies on Monday. He's allowed 21 hits in 14 2-3 innings, with opponents hitting .328.
Stults made six starts against the Giants in 2013, going 2-2 with a 5.91 ERA as Hunter Pence went 6 for 17 with two homers and a double off him. Crawford also hit a pair of homers off Stults, and Pablo Sandoval is 12 for 22 with three doubles and a triple lifetime against him.
San Diego has won four of the last five home meetings with San Francisco.
