KEY GAME INFORMATION
ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss.
A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery.
Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool.
Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth.
''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.''
Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training.
''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''
LA DODGERS: LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Dodgers have spent big bucks on their roster, ramping up World Series expectations right along with the payroll. Now they want to produce results.
They'll get the chance starting Saturday in Australia, where they open the season against NL West rival Arizona.
With a payroll in the range of $225 million-plus, the Dodgers have laid the groundwork to get to their first World Series title since 1988, when they won the title. They came up short last year, losing to St. Louis in six games in the NL championship series.
''The expectations going in this time are realistic. We're a talented club and we're capable,'' said manager Don Mattingly, who signed a three-year extension in January.
The Dodgers want to avoid the poor start they had last season, when key players were injured and the team had to rally to get back into the division race. They eventually won the title by 11 games over the Diamondbacks.
''We need to be more consistent,'' Mattingly said. ''I see it as winning every series and you'll be in pretty good shape. The next thing you know, you're 20 games over .500.''
First baseman Adrian Gonzalez is looking to follow up his strong season last year, while shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who was injured in the NL championship series, will be playing to set himself up for impending free agency.

*Diamondbacks-Dodgers Preview* ==============================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Arizona (5-14) at Los Angeles (10-7), 8:10 p.m. EDT

Having finally received a strong start from the worst rotation in baseball, the Arizona Diamondbacks ended their slide in their road series opener with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

With its offense still muddling along, Arizona could have a difficult time winning two in a row.

The Diamondbacks will give rookie Mike Bolsinger an opportunity to stick in their much-maligned rotation Saturday night when they try to hand the Dodgers their fourth loss in five games.

Arizona starters failed to record a quality start while posting a 9.93 ERA during a six-game losing streak before Wade Miley gave the club a much-needed lift Friday. He allowed one run and two hits over six-plus frames as the Diamondbacks (5-14) snapped the skid with a 4-2, 12-inning win at Chavez Ravine.

Gerardo Parra had three hits and Miguel Montero homered before Aaron Hill delivered a two-run single in the top of the 12th for the Diamondbacks' first win in six meetings with the Dodgers (10-7) this season.

Even with those timely hits, Arizona's lineup has produced just nine runs and batted .197 over the last four games. The Diamondbacks also are hitting .190 with runners in scoring position on the season.

Anaheim native Mark Trumbo, who was given Friday off, has gone 3 for 36 with one homer over his last nine games.

Arizona hopes to put up some runs to make things easier on Bolsinger in his first career start. The right-hander replaces Trevor Cahill, who went 0-4 with a 9.17 ERA before earning his first career save Friday.

Bolsinger, a 15th-round draft pick in 2010, went 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA at Triple-A Reno before making his first big-league appearance Monday. He was able to get some of the jitters out of the way, allowing two runs and six hits over three innings of relief in a 7-3 home loss to the New York Mets.

"It just seems the game gets faster here," Bolsinger told MLB's official website. "There's more going on. You've got to be aware of it and make sure you slow it down."

Scott Van Slyke and Juan Uribe supplied the only offense Friday with solo home runs for the Dodgers, who have totaled seven runs while dropping three of four. Uribe, whose blast tied the contest in the bottom of the ninth, is 10 for 25 with three homers over a six-game hitting streak.

Adrian Gonzalez, riding a 13-game hitting streak overall, has gone 8 for 17 with three homers and 10 RBIs in his last four against the Diamondbacks.

Dan Haren (2-0, 2.04), who pitched for the Diamondbacks from 2008-10, allowed two runs over 12 innings in his first two starts. However, he wasn't as sharp Sunday when he gave up three runs and nine hits over 5 2-3 frames in an 8-6 win at Arizona.

"I was able to get through it," Haren said. "I don't know how. I face them again and I have to have better stuff than this."

The right-hander has gone 2-1 with a 3.79 ERA in three career starts versus Arizona dating to his time with the Los Angeles Angels. Hill is 8 for 25 with two doubles, two triples and a home run and Chris Owings is 4 for 6 when facing Haren, though star Paul Goldschmidt only has one hit in six at-bats.

Cody Ross went 0 for 5 Friday in his season debut after suffering a dislocated hip last August, while the Dodgers' Hanley Ramirez was 1 for 4 after getting a day off to nurse a bruised left hand.
