Manager: Bryan Price (third season)
Who's new? RHP Scott Feldman, RHP Drew Storen, RHP Lisalverto Bonilla, OF Ryan Raburn, OF Desmond Jennings, IF/OF Arismendy Alcantara
Who's gone? 2B Brandon Phillips, C Ramon Cabrera, RHP Dan Straily, RHP Ross Ohlendorf, RHP Alfredo Simon, LHP John Lamb, RHP Josh Smith
Projected lineup: CF Billy Hamilton (.260, 3 HR, 17 RBI, 58 SB), SS Zack Cozart (.252, 16, 50), 1B Joey Votto (.326, 29, 97), LF Adam Duvall (.241, 33, 103), RF Scott Schebler (.265, 9, 40), 3B Eugenio Suarez (.248, 21, 70), C Devin Mesoraco (.140, 0, 1 in 16 games), 2B Jose Peraza (.324, 3, 25, 21 SB)
Rotation: RH Anthony DeSclafani (9-5, 3.28 ERA), RH Scott Feldman (7-4, 3.97 with Astros and Blue Jays), LH Brandon Finnegan (10-11, 3.98), RH Tim Adleman (4-4, 4.00), RH Robert Stephenson (2-3, 6.08) or Cody Reed (0-7, 7.36) or Amir Garrett (2-5, 3.46 for Triple-A Louisville)
Key relievers: RH Raisel Iglesias (3-2, 2.53, 6/8 SV), RH Drew Storen (3-0, 3.44 with Mariners), RH Michael Lorenzen (2-1, 2.88), LH Tony Cingrani (2-5, 4.14, 17/23 SV), RH Jumbo Diaz (1-1, 3.14), RH Blake Wood (6-5, 3.99)
Hot spot: Rotation. The Reds' rebuilding effort is just beginning to bear fruit on the mound. DeSclafani, 26, made a big leap in his second full season in 2016. Finnegan, 23, will try to do the same this year. If the next wave of pitchers isn't ready for the major leagues, Stephenson, Reed, Garrett, Sal Romano and Rookie Davis would make a mean rotation at Triple-A. Meanwhile, 40-year-old Bronson Arroyo will try to hold down a job like it's 2004.
Outlook: After trading Phillips to the Braves, only Votto and pitcher Homer Bailey remain from the Reds' last season as a contending team. Cincinnati was basically a .500 team (36-37) after the All-Star break last season, so maybe a return to respectability isn't far off. Hamilton and infielder Jose Peraza, electric on the bases and in the field, have breakout potential. There might not be another star on the roster besides Votto, but that's OK for now. With no veterans blocking their best prospects, the Reds can use this season to figure out what their system holds. | | ATLANTA: 2016: 68-93, fifth place
Manager: Brian Snitker (second season)
Who's new? 2B Brandon Phillips, 2B Micah Johnson, C Kurt Suzuki, IF/OF Sean Rodriguez, SP Bartolo Colon, SP R.A. Dickey, SP Jaime Garcia
Who's gone? OF Mallex Smith, C A.J. Pierzynski, RHP Chris Withrow, RHP Ryan Weber
Projected lineup: CF Ender Inciarte (.291, 3 HR, 29 RBI, 16 SB), SS Dansby Swanson (.302, 3, 17), 1B Freddie Freeman (.302, 34, 91), LF Matt Kemp (.280, 12, 39 with Padres and Braves), RF Nick Markakis (.269, 13, 89), 2B Brandon Phillips (.291, 11, 64, 14 SB), 3B Adonis Garcia (.273, 14, 65), C Tyler Flowers (.270, 8, 41)
Rotation: RH Julio Teheran (7-10, 3.21), RH Bartolo Colon (15-8, 3.43 with Mets), LH Jaime Garcia (10-13, 4.67 with Cardinals), RH R.A. Dickey (10-15, 4.46 with Blue Jays), RH Mike Foltynewicz (9-5, 4.31)
Key relievers: RH Jim Johnson (2-6, 3.06 ERA, 20/23 SV), RH Arodys Vizcaino (1-4, 4.42, 10/14 SV), RH Mauricio Cabrera (5-1, 2.82), LH Ian Krol (2-0, 3.18), RH Jose Ramirez (2-2, 3.58), RH Josh Collmenter (1-0, 4.84 with Diamondbacks)
Hot spots: Second base and rotation. Phillips, acquired from the Reds in February, is a placeholder for prospect Ozzie Albies at second base. Albies, 20, won the Double-A Southern League batting title in 2016 and is a potential September call-up at least. The rotation is in a similar state of transition, but it's more complicated. Veterans Teheran, Colon, Dickey and Garcia have jobs for now. Youngsters Foltynewicz, Aaron Blair, Matt Wisler, Lucas Sims and Sean Newcomb are pushing to seize long-term spots.
Outlook: In the inaugural season at SunTrust Park, the Braves will try to crack .500 for the first time since 2013. Their rebuilding work isn't finished, but the front office added about $30 million in salary over the winter. That ought to be enough to make the Braves watchable again. Now, the veterans trying to extend their careers in Atlanta (Colon, Dickey, Phillips, Kemp) are almost as intriguing as the prospects. The sight of 23-year-old shortstop Swanson backing up 40-something pitchers Colon and Dickey could be something special. |
| | Braves' Kemp looks to return versus Reds
ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Braves hope to have left fielder Matt Kemp back in the lineup on Saturday for the middle game of their home series with the Cincinnati Reds. "All things are pointing to a go right now," Braves manager Brian Snitker said after the Atlanta training staff put Kemp's right hamstring through some final tests Friday at SunTrust Park. Kemp, hitting .290 with 14 homers and 44 RBIs, hasn't played since July 28, when he strained his right hamstring for the second time this season. The 32-year-old slugger also spent time on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring and the three DL stints have limited him to 88 games. "That's a pretty big presence in the lineup when you don't have it," Snitker said. "It will mean a lot to our lineup to get him back in there." Kemp was a force at the plate for the Braves after being acquired from San Diego at the end of July last season, hitting .280 with 12 homers and 39 RBIs in 56 games. His work with the Braves allowed Kemp to finish the season with 35 homers and 108 RBIs -- his best power numbers since 2011 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Rookie right-hander Robert Stephenson (0-4, 6.64 ERA) will start Saturday's game for the Reds against Braves right-hander Julio Teheran. Teheran hopes he's back on track after pitching seven scoreless innings in a no-decision at Colorado on Monday, but he's 1-8 with a 7.07 ERA at SunTrust Park during a disappointing season. Teheran is 3-2 with a 3.64 ERA lifetime against the Reds, but allowed five runs and a season-worst 11 hits over five innings in a victory at Cincinnati on June 4. Stephenson returns to the Reds rotation after following up a stint on the disabled list with two scoreless innings of relief against Milwaukee last Sunday. Stephenson, who has made three starts and 17 relief appearances, bruised his right shoulder Aug. 2 diving for a pop up and was placed on the DL two days later. The Reds (52-71) are starting three rookies in the series against the Braves (54-66) and the rotation could be even younger than it has been most of the season the rest of the way. Veteran right-hander Scott Feldman was placed on the 10-day disabled list Friday because of lingering right knee inflammation and may be done for the year. He will be re-examined in Cincinnati. "I think one of the options will be season-ending," Reds manager Bryan Price said. Feldman made two starts after returning from a DL stint of nearly a month and allowed five home runs over 3 2/3 innings Thursday against the Chicago Cubs while battling issues with the knee. "You could tell he was more limited in yesterday's outing," Price said. "He shouldn't be out there when he can't field his position." Feldman, the Reds' Opening Day starter, is 7-7 with a 4.77 ERA in 21 starts. Asher Wojciechowski, bumped to the bullpen with Stephenson's rejoining the rotation, could return to a starter role in place of Feldman. |
