KEY GAME INFORMATION
MILWAUKEE: 2016: 73-89, fourth place
Manager: Craig Counsell (third season)
Who's new? 1B Eric Thames, 3B Travis Shaw, C Jett Bandy, RHP Neftali Feliz, RHP Joba Chamberlain, LHP Tommy Milone
Who's gone? 1B Chris Carter, C Martin Maldonado, OF Rymer Liriano, RHP Tyler Thornburg, RHP Blaine Boyer, LHP Chris Capuano
Projected lineup: 2B Jonathan Villar (.285, 19 HR, 63 RBI, 62 SB), SS Orlando Arcia (.219, 4, 17), LF Ryan Braun (.305, 30, 91, 16), 1B Eric Thames (.317, 40, 118, 13 SBs in Korea), RF Domingo Santana (.256, 11, 32), 3B Travis Shaw (.242, 16, 71 with Red Sox), CF Keon Broxton (.242, 9, 19, 23 SB), C Jett Bandy (.234, 8, 25 with Angels)
Rotation: Junior Guerra (9-3, 2.81 ERA), Zach Davies (11-7, 3.97), Matt Garza (4-8, 4.51), Wily Peralta (7-11, 3.86), Jimmy Nelson (8-16, 4.62) or Chase Anderson (9-11, 4.39) or Tommy Milone (3-5, 5.71 with Twins)
Key relievers: RHP Neftali Feliz (4-2, 3.52 with Pirates), RHP Corey Knebel (1-4, 4.68), RHP Carlos Torres (3-3, 2.73), RHP Jhan Marinez (0-1, 3.22), RHP Joba Chamberlain (0-0, 2.25 with Indians), RHP Jacob Barnes (0-1, 2.70), RHP Tyler Cravy (0-1, 2.86) Hot spot: Fifth starter. Guerra and Davies began last season in the minors, then emerged as pleasant surprises in an otherwise long season. Now the Brewers have seven candidates for five rotation jobs. Nelson, who's led the staff in innings the last two years, might be wary of his two minor league options if he struggles out of the gate.
Outlook: No team was more active on the bases last season than the Brewers, whose 181 steals were the most by any team since 2009. Villar, Broxton and Hernan Perez were the primary thieves, and all return. The front office curiously chose not to bring back Carter after a 41-home run season. His replacement is Thames, who hasn't had a major league at-bat since 2012. Hitter-friendly Miller Park will do no favors to their pedestrian pitching staff, but the Brewers aren't expected to contend for at least another couple seasons. At least their offense will be entertaining in the meantime.
COLORADO: 2016: 75-87, third place
Manager: Bud Black (first season)
Who's new? 1B Ian Desmond, IF Alexi Amarista, RHP Greg Holland, LHP Mike Dunn
Who's gone? Manager Walt Weiss, LHP Jorge De La Rosa, RHP Eddie Butler, LHP Boone Logan, C Nick Hundley, IF Daniel Descalso, OF Ryan Raburn
Projected lineup: CF Charlie Blackmon (.324, 29 HR, 82 RBI, 17 SB), 2B D.J. LeMahieu (.348, 11, 66, 11), 3B Nolan Arenado (.294, 41, 133), RF Carlos Gonzalez (.298, 25, 100), 1B Mark Reynolds (.282, 14, 53), LF David Dahl (.315, 7, 24) or Gerardo Parra (.253, 7, 39), SS Trevor Story (.272, 27, 72), C Tony Wolters (.259, 3, 30)
Rotation: RH Jon Gray (10-10, 4.61 ERA), RH Tyler Chatwood (12-9, 3.87), LH Tyler Anderson (5-6, 3.54), LH Kyle Freeland (6-3, 3.91 at Triple-A), RH German Marquez (1-1, 5.23)
Key relievers: Greg Holland (did not pitch in 2016), Adam Ottavino (1-3, 2.67, 7/12 SV), Mike Dunn (6-1, 3.40, 4/8 SV with Marlins), Jake McGee (2-3, 4.73, 15/19 SV), Jordan Lyles (4-5, 5.83), Chad Qualls (2-0, 5.23), Chris Rusin (3-5, 3.74), Carlos Estevez (3-7, 5.24, 11/18 SV)
Hot spots: Catcher and closer. Wolters was 23 years old and hadn't played a game above Double-A last year when the Rockies claimed him off waivers from Cleveland. Now he's the most experienced catcher on the Rockies' 40-man roster, having played 71 major league games. A pitch-framing specialist with rare agility behind the plate, Wolters must coax pitchers through Coors Field and its occasional malefactions. While Colorado's rotation is the best it's looked in years, the ninth inning could be an adventure. Seven pitchers recorded a save for the Rockies in 2016. Now, a man who hasn't thrown a competitive pitch since 2015 might be their best option. Holland, 31, saved 125 games for the Royals from 2013-15 before elbow surgery paused his career. Ottavino will close if Holland can't.
Outlook: The Rockies probably won't catch the Dodgers or Giants this season, but a .500 record or better would be a big boost for their rebuilding movement. Black skippered the Padres from 2007-15, then spent last year in the Angels' front office. His first task: keeping morale steady after a spate of injuries and illness struck the clubhouse. The Rockies' biggest offseason acquisition was veteran Desmond, but he'll miss the beginning of the season with a fractured hand. Pitcher Chad Bettis, who led the Rockies with 32 starts last year, is undergoing chemotherapy treatment for testicular cancer. Backup catcher Tom Murphy (hairline fracture in forearm) and outfielder Dahl (ribs) could also start the season on the DL. If they can get past these early hurdles, the Rockies will be competitive at worst and dangerous at best.
PREVIEW
Rockies' Bettis continues comeback versus Brewers

DENVER -- After his heartwarming comeback Monday, Colorado Rockies starter Chad Bettis did a series of interviews this week.

Bettis recalled one questioner asking: "'Next start's going to be normal, right?' I was like, 'No, to be honest. I don't think another start will ever be normal again for me just because everything's changed.'"

The right-hander underwent surgery for testicular cancer in November and then had to endure nine weeks of chemotherapy when cancer was detected in his lymph nodes in March.

Bettis (0-0, 0.00 ERA) pitched seven scoreless innings against Atlanta in his 2017 debut and will start Saturday against the Milwaukee Brewers. He is 2-1 with a 2.50 ERA in three career starts against the Brewers.

Milwaukee will start Brandon Woodruff (1-1, 1.50 ERA). He will be making his third start after making his major league debut Aug. 4 and has never faced the Rockies.

Against the Braves, Bettis threw 89 pitches, 62 strikes, and gave up six hits with no walks and two strikeouts. He stranded five runners and held the Braves hitless in seven at-bats with runners in scoring position. After Bettis left the game, the Rockies scored three runs in the eighth and won 3-0.

Bettis took the mound after pitching 23 1/3 innings in six games, five starts, on a rehab assignment. That was more or less his spring training. In the past, Bettis has topped out at 96-97 mph with his fastball. Understandably, he sat around 90 mph with the pitch Monday.

"I did feel a little disconnection, because I think I was a little out of rhythm with everything," Bettis said. I've had way better mechanical starts than what I did Monday, but a lot of those jitters are going to be gone this next start. Still, I think I ended up getting to 92, 93 (mph), which is fine. It's always a work in progress to keep going, moving forward. This is essentially April, April in August."

Bettis said he is a much different pitcher than he was last year when he led the Rockies in wins (14), starts (32) and innings (186). He said he approached Monday's game closer to starts in the second half of last year "but still a little bit more in depth, a little bit more refined. That's a huge step for me."

Asked what he meant by more in depth, Bettis said, "Preparing smarter. I really want to give you a lot more information about it, but I can't."

Woodruff took a 4-0 loss in his last outing Aug. 9 against Minnesota, allowing three hits and two runs in 5 2/3 innings with three walks and two strikeouts. Opponents are batting .225 against Woodruff, who was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs where he went 6-5 with a 4.46 ERA in 15 starts.

The altitude at Colorado Springs is 6,035 feet -- higher than Denver's 5,280 feet -- and windy conditions are the norm at the ballpark there. So while Woodruff will be making his Coors Field debut, he should benefit from having experienced the harsh pitching conditions at Colorado Springs.

"I do think it helps, I really do," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "Because I think you come in here and all the players have kind of heard the stories. He's felt it already, so he knows what it's like.

"I think the (Coors Field) stories kind of get pushed down a little bit for him. It's not going to be a surprise what his breaking ball looks like. He's not going to be surprised how the ball feels in his hand. So I think it's a good thing he's pitched in this environment, for sure."
