| | | MILWAUKEE: MILWAUKEE (AP) - Two pitches into his spring training return, the Brewers' most important player tried to prove his point.
Home run, Ryan Braun.
Now let's see how he fares when the games count.
Bolstered by the return of Braun from a 65-game doping suspension and the signing of free-agent starter Matt Garza, Milwaukee enters the 2014 season hoping it has the pieces to contend again in the competitive NL Central.
Braun has vowed to return to his 2011 MVP form.
''I think the expectation is to have an opportunity to compete to get back to the playoffs. That's our goal, I think it's realistic,'' Braun said during spring training in Phoenix.
Staying healthy would help, too. Besides Braun's suspension, injuries sapped much of the Brewers' power last year with projected 3-4-5 hitters Braun, Aramis Ramirez and Corey Hart each missing various lengths of time. Hart never played because of a knee injury.
Hart is gone, but Braun and Ramirez are back and bolstered by new team cornerstones who emerged last season in Carlos Gomez, Jean Segura and Jonathan Lucroy.
| | ARIZONA: PHOENIX (AP) - The season had not even started when the Arizona Diamondbacks took a loss. A day before boarding the plane for their season opener in Australia, the Diamondbacks learned scheduled opening-day starter Patrick Corbin had a partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow and might need season-ending surgery. Arizona went 21-8 in the young left-hander's starts last season, more than a quarter of the victories for a team that went 81-81 for the second year in a row. The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrated their NL West title by splashing around in Arizona's Chase Field swimming pool. Arizona retooled during the offseason by adding power (Mark Trumbo), a veteran starter (Bronson Arroyo) and a young closer (Addison Reed). Even with the loss of Corbin, the Diamondbacks feel they have the components to contend for at least a wild-card berth. ''They really want it,'' catcher Miguel Montero said. ''They're hungry for something, and that's a good feeling. I think last year we were a little bit more laid back. This year the guys are hungry, and that's a good thing.'' Trumbo noticed a positive attitude right from the start of spring training. ''That's the personality of the guys here and that plays really well for the course of a long season,'' he said. ''You've got to have guys that play the game right way, but play it with a little bit of a chip on their shoulder and bring it every day.''

*Brewers-Diamondbacks Preview* ==============================
By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer
Milwaukee (41-28) at Arizona (29-42), 9:40 p.m. EDT
Though he leads the majors in losses, Brandon McCarthy certainly hasn't had much luck in terms of the opposing pitchers he's drawn recently, and his team's lack of run support hasn't helped either.
The red-hot Paul Goldschmidt may be ready to supply the offensive backing McCarthy has been missing.
McCarthy seeks his first win since May 3 on Monday night when the Arizona Diamondbacks host the Milwaukee Brewers in the opener of a four-game set.
McCarthy (1-9, 5.29 ERA) has struggled of late, posting a 6.94 ERA while losing three straight. He took his major league-leading ninth defeat in Wednesday's 5-1 loss at Houston, allowing five runs - two on homers - over six innings.
The right-hander is winless in seven starts, though he's faced Johnny Cueto, Julio Teheran and Dallas Keuchel - all of whom own ERAs of 2.41 or lower - in the last three. Arizona supplied him with three runs of support over 16 2-3 innings in those games.
"It's tough, and it's especially tough for me know that I have to be the guy to suppress it the best that I can," McCarthy said. "You feel like you have let everything down."
He gave up one run over five innings in a no-decision in his only previous start versus Milwaukee, a 4-3 win for Texas on June 9, 2007.
Goldschmidt is swinging a hot bat - he's driven in 13 runs in his last 12 games and has five homers in the last 11 after hitting his 15th of the season in Sunday's 6-3 victory against the Dodgers. He's also batting .411 with 14 RBIs in 15 career games against the Brewers and was 7 for 15 with two homers last month when Arizona (30-42) took two of three in Milwaukee.
The Brewers (41-29) had posted a 1.91 ERA during a 5-2 stretch before surrendering a season-worst 19 hits in Sunday's 13-4 home loss to Cincinnati. Reliever Rob Wooten was charged with five runs and six hits without retiring a batter.
Wily Peralta (6-5, 2.90) will try to get the staff back on track. He held the Mets to a run in 6 1-3 innings in a 3-1 victory on Wednesday before heading home to take care of what manager Ron Roenicke described as "family business." Peralta declined to specify the reason but said he kept his normal routine between starts during his three days in the Dominican Republic.
"I did everything down there," Peralta told the team's official website. "I wasn't going to miss anything. I was going to be ready for (Monday)."
Peralta took the loss in a 3-2 defeat to Arizona on May 7, allowing a season-high 11 hits but just two runs over six innings. He won his only previous start against the Diamondbacks, limiting them to one run in a 5-1 road victory on July 14.
Goldschmidt is 4 for 6 with a home run off him.
Aaron Hill is hitting .432 over 18 career matchups with Milwaukee while Ryan Braun has five home runs and 10 RBIs in his last nine games versus Arizona.
Lyle Overbay is 6 for 12 off McCarthy.
