| |  | NY METS: NEW YORK (AP) - Five straight losing seasons. That's what the New York Mets have produced since moving into Citi Field.
David Wright, for one, is tired of it.
''We need to start going out there showing results,'' the star third baseman said. ''The last couple years we've kind of been hampered by some contracts and payroll issues. It seems like that's behind us. At the same time, we've got those prospects knocking at the door. I think we're in a better place now than we have been the past few years and quite frankly, I think we have a better team.''
Translation: No more waiting for next year. No more selling the future. No more excuses.
It's time to take a step forward - and that means winning.
General manager Sandy Alderson seems to think so, too. After he signed free agents Curtis Granderson, Bartolo Colon and Chris Young this offseason, a report emerged that Alderson told staffers he thinks the Mets can win 90 games (with a payroll under $90 million).
Even hard-core fans found that overly optimistic, especially with ace Matt Harvey expected to miss the entire season following Tommy John surgery. New York posted its second consecutive 74-88 record last year - and that was with Harvey on the mound most of the way.
But there is reason for hope, particularly in Triple-A. Touted young pitchers Noah Syndergaard and Rafael Montero could soon join a promising rotation that includes Colon, Zack Wheeler, Dillon Gee and Jonathon Niese.
''He's got all the traits of the good ones,'' manager Terry Collins said about Syndergaard. ''He's on track to be special.''
The offense could be better with the addition of Granderson, who got a $60 million, four-year deal after an injury-plagued season for the Yankees across town. His left-handed power bat should provide some much-needed protection for Wright.
The multitalented Young, on a one-year contract following a down season in Oakland, appears highly motivated to regain his All-Star form.
''It's been interesting to watch the whole team,'' Granderson said early in spring training. ''There's power here. Chris Young has been amazing.''
The lineup remains flawed and prone to strikeouts, though the roster has improved. Perhaps not enough to push Washington and Atlanta in the NL East just yet, but the Mets expect to take significant strides this season as they anticipate Harvey's return in 2015.
''When I re-signed here, I knew it wasn't an overnight fix. I think I like that part of the challenge of it,'' Wright said. ''I want to be part of the reason why we get this thing turned around and headed in the right direction and ultimately start winning again. I think we have that ability.''
| | ST LOUIS: ST. LOUIS (AP) - Last October, the St. Louis Cardinals were sufficiently flush with arms that they carried rookie Shelby Miller and deposed closer Edward Mujica in ceremonial roles and made it to Game 6 of the World Series against Boston.
After leading major league rookies with 15 wins, Miller was limited to one postseason inning due to concerns about a heavy workload. Mujica was used only in mop-up duty after mid-September.
The National League champions are perhaps even deeper, across the board, entering opening day March 31 at Cincinnati. The team that tied for the major league high with 97 wins has a surplus of viable candidates.
''I think we have the potential to be great,'' said ace Adam Wainwright, who won 19 games and finished second in NL Cy Young balloting. ''We just have to go out there, not listen to the hype, and perform.''
The 32-year-old Wainwright qualifies as the grizzled leader of a rotation that could include three members coming off big rookie debuts. Michael Wacha was a postseason sensation and the NLCS MVP, Miller went wire-to-wire as the fifth starter and Carlos Martinez, who's had an impressive spring, moved into the setup role when fellow rookie Trevor Rosenthal took over as closer.
Wacha and Martinez are 22, Miller and Rosenthal just 23.
There's also 15-game winner Lance Lynn, who struck out 10 in four innings of his last spring training start, and lefty Jaime Garcia could fit into the mix sometime in April coming off shoulder surgery. And don't forget Joe Kelly, another rookie who won 10 games and was the rotation's strongest starter much of the second half.
And one of the National League's best lineups, too.
Much is expected from a loyal fan base that extends several states, and that's OK.
''Our expectations,'' Lynn said, ''are higher than theirs.''

Matt Adams has homered in each game since coming off the disabled list, keeping the St. Louis Cardinals surging.
The New York Mets are just trying to win back-to-back games.
Adams has a chance to become the first Cardinal in three years to homer in four straight games Monday night, when St. Louis attempts to capitalize on a three-game series with the scuffling Mets.
After missing 13 games with tightness in his left calf, Adams has returned in impressive fashion, going 4 for 11 (.364) with four RBIs while helping the Cardinals (37-32) to a three-game sweep of Washington.
The first baseman homered in each of those games, doubling his season total. He's bidding to become the first Cardinal to homer in four straight games since Albert Pujols did it from June 3-7, 2011.
Adams is also batting .412 with 10 RBIs over his last 15 games, with St. Louis winning 11 of them.
The Cardinals are collectively enjoying a power surge, hitting eight homers during a 6-1 stretch to come one short of their total over the previous 26 games. Their 40 homers are the fewest in the NL, and Adams and Holliday got one each to spur Sunday's 5-2 win over the Nationals.
"We've been saying for months now these guys have done that," manager Mike Matheny said. "It's not a surprise. It's not like these guys have never hit any home runs in their lives. I think that everybody just thought that we were either brainwashing them not to hit home runs or else they all lost it collectively and both of them are ridiculous."
Adams, though, is 5 for 26 in 12 career meetings with the Mets (31-38), but St. Louis has won 12 of the past 16 home matchups thanks partly to a .299 batting average.
New York has managed to score five or more runs twice while losing nine of 12. Though the offense batted .228 over the weekend, the staff's 2.67 ERA helped the Mets take two of three from San Diego after Sunday's 3-1 victory.
The Mets went 1 for 8 with runners in scoring position, and are hitting .155 in that scenario over the past 12 games.
"We had opportunities to blow this game open," manager Terry Collins said. "We have to start blowing some games open because it's going to take a lot of pressure off a lot of people."
One of those people may be rookie Jacob deGrom (0-3, 3.44 ERA), who is getting his seventh attempt at his first career win. He's been backed by 11 total runs, getting two or fewer in five of his outings.
That happened again Wednesday, when the right-hander yielded three runs in 5 2-3 innings of a 3-1 loss to Milwaukee.
"One of these days we are going to get that big hit for him and he'll get that win," Collins said.
The Mets are catching a break since they won't be facing Cardinals ace and nine-game winner Adam Wainwright, who is sidelined with tendinitis in his right elbow. He's won his last two starts against them while tossing 14 consecutive scoreless innings.
Carlos Martinez (0-3, 4.67) gets the nod in his place and will make his second major league start. He surrendered four runs in 4 2-3 innings of a 5-1 defeat to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Aug. 8.
The right-hander has pitched 1 1-3 scoreless innings of relief over two meetings with New York, striking out three.
