| | | OTTAWA: LAST SEASON: 37-31-14, 88 points, finished 11th in the Eastern Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Paul MacLean, fourth season with Ottawa, 102-79-30.
ADDED: RW Alex Chiasson, C David Legwand.
LOST: RW Alex Hemsky, C Jason Spezza.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Bobby Ryan. The right winger is in the final year of a five-year, $25.5 million deal, and according to general manager Bryan Murray has decided to wait before determining whether to re-sign. Murray noted the sides will talk ''in October or November to get something done.''
OUTLOOK: It was only 2012 and 2013 when many thought Ottawa was a franchise on the ascent after back-to-back playoff appearances. Now the Senators are facing an uncertain future as Ottawa lost centers Daniel Alfredsson and Spezza the last two offseasons. There is a very real possibility the organization may have to deal Ryan and Methot during the season if the players cannot come to terms with the team. It is not a playoff formula. | | WASHINGTON: LAST SEASON: 38-30-14, 90 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing ninth in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Barry Trotz, 1st season with Capitals; 16th overall in NHL, 557-479-60-100.
ADDED: Trotz, GM Brian MacLellan, D Brooks Orpik, D Matt Niskanen, G Justin Peters.
LOST: Coach Adam Oates, GM George McPhee, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Dustin Penner, G Jaroslav Halak.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Alex Ovechkin, as always. The three-time league MVP led the NHL with 51 goals last season, but his plus-minus of minus-35 was third-worst in the league. Trotz plans to move Ovechkin back to left wing and also hopes to cajole more of a team game from the Russian forward.
OUTLOOK: It was deflating enough for the talented Capitals to lose in the early rounds of the playoffs every year, but last season they didn't make the postseason at all, a failure that cost Oates and McPhee their jobs. Orpik and Niskanen should stabilize the blue line, but nothing is more crucial in Washington than the relationship between Ovechkin and the coach du jour. Trotz is Ovechkin's first NHL head coach with prior head coaching experience elsewhere in the league, giving him the cachet to make demands of his players - and to expect them to be met. |

Ottawa (14-13-6) at Washington (16-10-6), 7:00 p.m. EDT
The Washington Capitals are enjoying their best stretch of the season, but most of that success has come on the road.
Success is not a word they've been able to use regarding recent matchups with the Ottawa Senators.
The Capitals will try to take advantage of their only home game in a two-week span and end a seven-game skid against the Senators on Monday night.
Washington extended its season-best points streak to eight games (6-0-2) Saturday with a strong all-around performance in New Jersey. Braden Holtby needed to stop only 21 shots and Nicklas Backstrom had two goals and an assist in a 4-0 victory.
Holtby has been in net for each of the last eight games, posting a 1.84 goals-against average. He's had plenty of help from his teammates, facing an average of 25.4 shots in the past five games.
"I think we're doing what we've wanted to do all season, but we're now finding a way to do it consistently," Holtby said. "We're using our speed and size to our advantage. There aren't a lot of teams who can match up with us there. We now know it's our strength."
Saturday's win improved the Capitals to 5-0-1 on the road during their eight-game streak. Their 10 road wins ties them with New York Islanders for the most in the Eastern Conference. Conversely, Washington (16-10-6) has won six of 15 home games (6-5-4), with only New Jersey (four) owning fewer home victories in the East.
"We've got to be good at home," coach Barry Trotz told the team's official website. "Our fans deserve that. Whatever it is, we need their energy and we've got to give them some energy and play well at home and establish the home turf."
This is the Capitals' only home contest in a seven-game span before they host Chicago at Nationals Park in the Winter Classic on New Year's Day.
Perhaps the best news for Washington is the recent play of Alex Ovechkin, who scored a highlight-reel goal Saturday. Though he only has three goals and six points during the 6-0-2 surge, the superstar forward has five or more shots in a season-high five consecutive games.
"He's had a couple of games when he hasn't scored and you look at the scoresheet and he's got seven or eight shots, good looks too," Trotz said. "I've never seen a guy hit the post so much. I swear he's hit 15 or 20 goal posts this year."
Ovechkin, like the rest of his teammates, hasn't had much success against the Senators lately. The Capitals have lost the last seven meetings, scoring one goal or none in four of the last five. Ovechkin has played in five of those losses, totaling two points with a minus-five.
Ottawa (14-13-6) was unable to win a third straight game, falling 4-1 at Montreal on Saturday after setting a season high in goals in a 6-2 victory over league-leading Anaheim one night earlier.
The loss dropped the Senators to 3-2-1 since Dave Cameron replaced Paul MacLean as head coach.
"I thought the compete level was really good and we worked hard in a good building against a good team," Cameron said. "That gave us a chance, we just weren't able to pull it out."
After Robin Lehner got the start Saturday, Craig Anderson figures to be back in net for this game. Anderson has been among the biggest keys behind Ottawa's win streak against Washington, winning all seven starts with a 1.57 GAA.
Defenseman Erik Karlsson has two goals and 10 assists during an eight-game point streak in the series.
