| | | NASHVILLE: LAST SEASON: 38-32-12, 88 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 10th in the Western Conference.
COACH: Peter Laviolette, 1st season with Predators, 389-282-25-63 overall.
ADDED: F James Neal, F Olli Jokinen, F Mike Ribeiro, F Derek Roy.
LOST: Coach Barry Trotz, goaltenders coach Mitch Korn, F Patric Hornqvist, F Nick Spaling.
PLAYER TO WATCH: G Pekka Rinne. Even with Ribeiro needing to prove his personal issues have been handled, Rinne is the two-time Vezina Trophy finalist who anchors Nashville's defense. He only played 24 games last season after an infection in his surgically-repaired hip needed more surgery, keeping him on crutches for weeks. Rinne went 3-0-1 in his final four games and was the MVP of the World Championships.
OUTLOOK: The Predators missed the playoffs by three points with Rinne missing much of last season. Laviolette is expected to boost the Predators' offense and take advantage of the experienced forwards added during the offseason, and general manager David Poile has made it clear they must reach the playoffs. | | COLUMBUS: LAST SEASON: 43-32-7, 93 points. Eliminated in first round of playoffs by Pittsburgh in 6 games.
COACH: Todd Richards, fourth season with the Blue Jackets, 85-70-16; 5th overall in NHL.
ADDED: LW Scott Hartnell, RW Jerry D'Amigo, RW Brian Gibbons.
LOST: LW R.J. Umberger, C Derek MacKenzie, RW Jack Skille.
PLAYER TO WATCH: C Brandon Dubinsky. With two of the team's top centers unavailable (Ryan Johansen, holdout; Boone Jenner, broken hand), the fiery 28-year-old's role only grows bigger. He was already the heart and soul of a team that doesn't have an official captain, even though he would seem the likely choice. Coming off a year in which he had 16 goals and 34 assists and continually came up big late in games, he'll be counted on to provide even more points and leadership.
OUTLOOK: If the contract dispute between Johansen and the club isn't resolved soon, and with Jenner and Nathan Horton (bad back) out for the foreseeable future, the Blue Jackets may have to win a lot of 1-0 and 2-1 games in which G Sergei Bobrovsky stands on his head. Also, several young players (most likely Alexander Wennberg and Simon Hjalmarsson) may have to be gangbusters right from the outset to kill time until the club's at full strength. |

*Predators-Blue Jackets Preview* ================================
Nashville (21-8-2) at Columbus (14-15-3), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Pekka Rinne of the Nashville Predators leads the NHL in victories.
No goaltender has won more games in December than Sergei Bobrovsky of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The Blue Jackets haven't suffered a regulation defeat since losing to the Predators to close out November, and these goalies figure to oppose each other Monday night in Columbus.
Nashville (21-8-2) has been one of the league's biggest surprises behind Rinne, who has accounted for all of his club's victories and ranks among the NHL's best with a 1.87 goals-against average.
Rinne owns more victories over the Blue Jackets than any other team, improving to 16-7-2 with a 2.38 GAA against them when he made 21 saves in a 2-1 home win Nov. 29.
He wasn't opposed in that contest by Bobrovsky, who has started every game since while going 8-0-1 with a 2.01 GAA this month. That success has come even though he is facing an average of 35.4 shots in that time period.
Bobrovsky made 39 saves in Saturday's 3-2 shootout home win over Chicago. Columbus (14-15-3) bounced back from its only loss this month, 5-4 in overtime to Washington on Thursday.
"The last nine games, they block shots, they sacrifice and they help out a lot," Bobrovsky said of his teammates. "It doesn't seem like it, that they had (that many) shots on goal."
Coach Todd Richards remains concerned by the amount of shots allowed.
"It is finding a way to win hockey games," Richards said. "But this recipe of giving up 30-plus shots, it's not a good recipe."
Bobrovsky has allowed 10 goals in winning four of five head-to-head matchups with Rinne, who has gone 1-3-1 with a 2.40 GAA in those games.
Rinne gave up his highest goal total in a 22-save effort in Saturday's 6-5 win at Minnesota. The Predators allowed the equalizer with 48 seconds left in regulation before Mattias Ekholm scored in overtime.
"We pretty much gave them a point, but we deserved those two points," Rinne told the league's official website. "Didn't like the five goals, but other than that, a huge win for us."
The Predators finished with a 44-27 edge in shots. Matt Cullen, Roman Josi and Craig Smith each had a goal and an assist.
"I thought we were solid," coach Peter Laviolette said. "Fired a lot of attempts, got a lot of shots on net, scored a lot of goals. They had a couple of re-direct goals, but overall, I thought we did a real good job on the road."
This contest features emerging talents in leading goal scorers Nick Foligno of Columbus and Filip Forsberg of Nashville. Foligno is two goals shy of his career high of 18 while Forsberg leads all rookies with a team-best 13.
Columbus is among the top power-play teams in the NHL at 23.1 percent while Nashville is one of the worst at 12.0.
The Jackets' Ryan Johansen, second on the team with nine goals, has not scored in this win streak.
Columbus remains without center Boone Jenner, out due to a stress fracture in his back. Jenner averages a team-high 3.25 hits.
