| | | BOSTON: BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Bruins were less than two minutes away from forcing a seventh game of the Stanley Cup finals. Now they must wait nearly seven months until the next postseason.
With the core of their team returning, the Bruins should reach the playoffs for the seventh straight season. And they took steps to secure their long-term future by signing center Patrice Bergeron and goalie Tuukka Rask to eight-year contracts and general manager Peter Chiarelli to a four-year extension.
Last season, the Bruins came close to their second championship in three years. They led Chicago 2-1 in Game 6 then allowed two goals in the last 76 seconds and the Blackhawks won 3-2 to take the Cup.
The Bruins open the season Oct. 3 at home against the Tampa Bay Lightning. | | TORONTO: TORONTO (AP) - Maple Leafs general manager Dave Nonis was content with his labors when he met with reporters in an offseason July press conference.
Just 53 days earlier, his team blew a three-goal lead in the third period of a Game 7 of vs. Boston. Instead of basking in the glow of Toronto's first playoff appearance since 2003-04, Nonis had to ponder what went wrong in that first-round exit, and what needed to be done to make sure it didn't happen again.
So, he traded for Los Angeles Kings goaltender Jonathan Bernier and Chicago Blackhawks center Dave Bolland, and signed New Jersey Devils right wing David Clarkson to a seven-year, $36.75 million free agent contract.
Suddenly, a good Maple Leafs team that had a bad ending, was a better team with renewed vigor.
``I've done what I can do,'' Nonis said. ``We're pretty happy. I think we'll be pretty competitive. I can tell you (coach Randy Carlyle) is happy with the options we have in a lot of areas.''
Toronto opens vs. Montreal on Oct. 1. |

*Bruins-Maple Leafs Preview* ============================
By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer
Boston (18-8-2) at Toronto (15-11-3), 7:00 p.m. EDT
The Boston Bruins are set to open a four-game trek after picking up another two points in front of their home fans.
Coach Claude Julien's team doesn't figure to get much support from the crowd Sunday night.
The Bruins visit Toronto for the first time since stunning the Maple Leafs in Game 7 of last season's Eastern Conference quarterfinals.
Boston (19-8-2) erased a 4-1 deficit in the last 10:42 of regulation to force overtime, with the last two goals coming in the final 1:22. Patrice Bergeron, who tied things up with 51 seconds left, went on to net the game-winner and eliminate Toronto.
Boston has also outscored the Maple Leafs 48-18 in taking 10 of 11 regular-season meetings. The Bruins won 3-1 on Nov. 9 behind two more goals from Bergeron, improving to 31-9-5 in the series since 2006-07.
"We were not really focused on what happened last year," said Zdeno Chara, who also scored in last month's victory. "That was something that was behind us."
The Bruins are coming off Saturday's thrilling 3-2 win over Pittsburgh. David Krejci tied the score with 1:29 left in regulation before Chara tallied the go-ahead goal with 13 seconds remaining.
"It was a good win for us," Julien told the NHL's official website. "For us to kind of grind it out and get those two late goals and get the win in regulation, I think we have to build on that."
Aside from losing Loui Eriksson to a concussion, the Bruins were forced to finish without Shawn Thornton, who received a match penalty for taking down Brooks Orpik from behind, pulling him to the ice and punching him while he was down.
"Obviously I made a mistake," said Thornton. "I'm aware of it. I've been told that they're having a hearing and it's hard for me to say much more other than that's not my intention. I feel awful. I feel sick."
While the Bruins are 10-0-2 in their last 12 at home, they have been limited to 13 goals in losing five of seven on the road.
The Maple Leafs (16-11-3) had been outscored 22-11 during an 0-3-2 skid before posting back-to-back wins, 3-2 over Dallas on Thursday and 4-3 in a shootout at Ottawa on Saturday. James van Riemsdyk had a goal and two assists while Phil Kessel added one of each.
"We found a way to win the hockey game," said coach Randy Carlyle, whose team blew a two-goal lead in the second period. "We've had some down times of late so we're going to take the points and move on. We need to continue to focus on the things we do well and when we skate and attack we can be a hockey club that can have success."
After Jonathan Bernier made 48 saves against the Stars, James Reimer turned away 47 shots Saturday.
"It's our job to get in front of them and give the team a chance and that's it," Reimer said. "We don't really care how many shots we're giving up. Our job is to stop the puck from going in the net."
Reimer is 1-4-1 with a 2.85 goals-against average in his last six regular-season games versus Boston. Bernier allowed a career-high seven goals in his only matchup against the Bruins, an 8-6 loss in 2007 while with Los Angeles.
Boston's Tuukka Rask, who made 28 saves against the Penguins, ranks sixth in the league with a 1.91 GAA. He is 9-1-0 with a 1.38 GAA and one shutout in 10 regular-season starts versus Toronto.
