| | | VANCOUVER: LAST SEASON: 36-35-11, finished 12th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Willie Desjardins, first season with the Canucks.
ADDED: C Nick Bonino, LW Derek Dorsett, G Ryan Miller, D Luca Sbisa, RW Radim Vrbata.
LOST: RW Zac Dalpe, D Jason Garrison, C Ryan Kesler, C Mike Santorelli, C Jordan Schroeder.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Ryan Miller. On June 29, 2013, the Canucks had a goaltending tandem of Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider. When Vancouver's season ended 288 days later, the duo in net was Eddie Lack and Jacob Markstrom after Schneider and Luongo were traded. In a combined 45 games with Vancouver, Lack and Markstrom were 17-19-5 with a 2.39 goals against average and .908 save percentage. Miller, who was signed to a three-year, $18 million free agent deal, has a 2.55 GAA and .916 save percentage the last four seasons.
OUTLOOK: The dismissals of coach John Tortorella and Kesler, traded to Anaheim, can be seen as addition by subtraction. Kesler's in-season trade request became a distraction for a team whose 2013-14 campaign was an unmitigated failure. So the Canucks can do nothing but improve in 2014-15. Will there be enough improvement to qualify for a playoff berth? That may be too much to ask for a team in the tough Western Conference. | | ST LOUIS: LAST SEASON: 52-23-7, 111 points. Tied for third overall in Western Conference, lost in first round to Chicago.
COACH: Ken Hitchcock, third full season with Blues. 124-55-20. 657-405-178 overall in 18 seasons, seventh on career win list.
ADDED: C Paul Stastny, C Jori Lehtera, D Carl Gunnarsson, C Colin Fraser, F Robby Fabbri.
LOST: G Ryan Miller, D Roman Polak, F Vladimir Sobotka, F Brenden Morrow.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jaden Schwartz. Signing Stastny in free agency creates open ice for everyone else. Schwartz led team at plus-28 last season and scored 25 goals.
OUTLOOK: They've been among the NHL's best regular-season teams the last few seasons, and one of the stingiest, too. Last season they allowed the third-fewest goals, plus defensemen Alex Pietrangelo and Kevin Shattenkirk are highly productive joining the rush. They appear to have enough firepower to contend for an ever-elusive first Stanley Cup, although as usual there's plenty of competition at the top of the Western Conference. |

*Canucks-Blues Preview* =======================
By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer
Vancouver (3-2-0) at St. Louis (2-2-1), 8:00 p.m. EDT
Ryan Miller will be returning to St. Louis for the first time since joining the Vancouver Canucks, but backup Eddie Lack's numbers against the Blues are making their coach's decision a difficult one.
Coach Willie Desjardins hasn't said who will start when the Western Conference foes meet Thursday night at the Scottrade Center, though he did hint that it would be difficult to deny Miller the opportunity to the team he spent the end of last season with before signing in Vancouver in July.
Either way, Desjardins seems to think the Canucks (3-2-0) are in good hands, despite dropping their last two games with 10 goals against after opening the season with three wins. Tuesday's 6-3 loss to Dallas was the latest, and Desjardins didn't assign blame to his goaltenders.
"The last two games, our goaltending has been good. It hasn't been their fault. We just haven't found ways to win," Desjardins said. "I know Miller would like the opportunity to St. Louis. Things didn't go the way he wanted there last year. And Eddie wants to go all the time, so it'll be a tough choice."
Miller was lifted early in the second period against the Stars after allowing five goals on 13 shots. It was his first loss of the year and bumped his goals-against average to 3.21 and dropped his save percentage to .884. His career against St. Louis is right in line with that at 1-4-0 with a 3.22 GAA and .890 save percentage in five starts.
Lack's three career games against the Blues all came last year, and he went 3-0-0 with a 0.97 GAA and .960 save percentage as the Canucks swept the season series.
Plenty of Vancouver's offense has come from its top line with newcomer Radim Vrbata joining Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin to total 21 points (7 goals, 14 assists) in the season's first five games. Vrbata, who signed in July from Arizona, has four goals and two assists. Daniel Sedin has eight points with at least one in each game.
The Blues (2-2-1) will start Jake Allen in goal and Brian Elliott will face Chicago Saturday. Allen played his first NHL game since 2012-13 in Saturday's 6-1 win at Arizona and made 24 saves.
"He was sound and solid," coach Ken Hitchcock told the team's official website. "We've had really good goaltending in every game we've played this year, and that's a really good sign."
The rest of the lineup is less certain with a flu bug circulating through the team. Forwards Alexander Steen and Jori Lehtera have had their practice weeks impacted by the illness.
St. Louis followed up its strong offensive night against Arizona with a 3-0 loss at Anaheim to complete a 1-1-1 West Coast swing, on which it was shut out twice.
Lehtera was scratched along with Paul Stastny, who suffered an upper-body injury against Arizona and isn't expected to play.
"Our health is not great right now," Hitchcock said. "We're just seeing who can play and who can't play, and seeing what we can get out of the next two games. Five or six guys on the team, they have a bacterial ailment and we're seeing who it pops up with. We are in a very fluid situation right now."
St. Louis is 6 for 20 on the power play to open the season, but its six even-strength goals are tied for the NHL low.
