KEY GAME INFORMATION
CAROLINA: LAST SEASON: 36-35-11, 83 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 13th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Bill Peters, 1st season with Hurricanes; 1st overall in NHL.
ADDED: C Brad Malone, D Tim Gleason.
LOST: C Manny Malhotra, G Justin Peters, C Brett Sutter.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Eric Staal. The captain is coming off the most disappointing season of his career, with his 21 goals his fewest in an 82-game season since he was a rookie a decade ago. With a salary of $9.25 million, he's one of the highest-paid players in the game but he managed just one power-play goal last season. He had sports hernia surgery during the offseason, and a fresh start with the detail-driven Peters could be just what Staal needs.
OUTLOOK: No team in the current alignment of the Eastern Conference has a longer playoff drought than the Hurricanes, who haven't made the postseason since 2009. How quickly Peters' message of focus and personal accountability gets through to a largely unchanged roster will determine whether that streak finally ends this season.
CALGARY: LAST SEASON: 35-40-7, 77 points, finished 13th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Bob Hartley, fourth season with Calgary, 383-291-61-45 overall.
ADDED: LW Brandon Bollig, D Deryk Engelland, G Jonas Hiller, LW Mason Raymond.
LOST: D Chris Butler, LW Mike Cammalleri.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Johnny Gaudreau. Offense was a major issue for the Flames, who finished 23rd and 24th, respectively, in goals per game (2.46) and power play percentage (15.7). Gaudreau, the reigning Hobey Baker winner, recorded 80 points (36 goals and 44 assists) in 40 games with Boston College.
OUTLOOK: With the possible exception of John Tortorella, who attempted to fight his way into the Calgary dressing room during the first intermission of a Jan. 18 game in Vancouver to ostensibly express his displeasure about a line brawl following the opening faceoff, Hartley and the Flames earned praise around the NHL for their hardworking style of play. Even with the addition of Gaudreau and friends to the lineup, don't expect the Flames to change their modus operandi. But it's too much to ask the Flames to compete for a playoff berth.

*Hurricanes-Flames Preview* ===========================

By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer

Carolina (0-3-2) at Calgary (4-3-1), 9:00 p.m. EDT

Following some solid play during a six-game trip, the Calgary Flames stumbled with an overtime loss to open a long-awaited homestand.

Now the Flames will try to bounce back Thursday night with their sixth consecutive home win against the injury-ravaged Carolina Hurricanes, who are looking to avoid a club-record six straight losses to open the season.

Calgary (4-3-1) allowed just 13 goals while winning four games on its recent road swing, including impressive victories over Nashville and Chicago on back-to-back nights.

The Flames, though, fell to 0-2 at the Scotiabank Saddledome with Tuesday's 2-1 loss to Tampa Bay in the opener of a five-game homestand. They allowed the tying goal with 2:16 to go in regulation before the Lightning scored the winner three minutes into overtime.

Calgary hasn't dropped its first three home games since 2000.

"That's a tough one to swallow," captain Mark Giordano said after the loss. "We'll take the point and learn from that, I guess."

Dennis Wideman scored for the Flames, giving him three goals after he finished with four over 46 games in an injury-riddled 2013-14 campaign. The defenseman had an assist in the most recent meeting with Carolina, a 2-0 road win Jan. 13 that gave Calgary a sweep of the season series and a 7-1-1 record against the Hurricanes since the start of '03-04.

Early in the third period against Tampa Bay, rookie Johnny Gaudreau maneuvered through the defense before flinging a pass back across the slot to Wideman. The skilled left winger now has three points in two games since being a healthy scratch Friday at Columbus.

"I think we all knew Johnny could be a great game-breaker. That's no secret," Wideman said. "Whenever he has the puck in the offensive zone, he can control the play and control the game."

Last season's Hobey Baker Award winner managed only one shot in the first five games before breaking through with a goal and an assist in Sunday's 4-1 victory at Winnipeg.

The Flames have outscored the Hurricanes 17-8 during their home winning streak in the series. Mikael Backlund, who has one goal and three assists this season, has two scores and an assist in his last three versus Carolina (0-3-2).

The Hurricanes welcomed back last season's leading scorer Jeff Skinner on Tuesday after he had missed the first four games with a concussion. Defenseman Andrej Sekera also returned after sitting out the previous game with an upper-body injury.

Skinner, however, had a debut to forget after his high-sticking penalty gave the Jets a late power play chance in a 3-1 road defeat that tied Carolina's club record of five straight losses to begin a season.

Skinner scored the tying goal in the third period of Carolina's most recent game in Calgary before missing a potential winning penalty shot late in regulation of a 2-1 overtime loss Dec. 12.

"It was good to have him back, but we need Jeff Skinner, you know what I mean?" coach Bill Peters said. "People think you're going to parachute in the lineup and be a star, it's not the way it works. We need him to get assertive and play responsibly."

John-Michael Liles could be back after sitting the past two games due to a lower-body injury. Nathan Gerbe (lower body), Pat Dwyer (lower body) and Eric Staal (upper body) are expected to return before the end of this five-game road stretch.

Calgary's Karri Ramo, who had 20 saves Tuesday, totaled 52 saves while winning both meetings with Carolina last season. Jonas Hiller has gone 3-1-0 with a 1.97 goals-against average in his four career starts against the Hurricanes.
