| | | NY RANGERS: LAST SEASON: 45-31-6, 96 points. Finished 2nd in Metropolitan Division, 5th in Eastern Conference. Lost to Los Angeles Kings in Stanley Cup finals.
COACH: Alain Vigneault, 2nd season with Rangers (45-31-6); 13th overall in NHL (467-319-102).
ADDED: D Dan Boyle, D Mike Kostka, D Matt Hunwick, C Chris Mueller, LW Tanner Glass, G Cedrick Desjardins, C Matthew Lombardi, RW Lee Stempniak, LW Ryan Malone.
LOST: C Brad Richards, RW Derek Dorsett, C Brian Boyle, D Anton Stralman, LW Benoit Pouliot, D Justin Falk, RW Arron Asham, LW Daniel Carcillo, D Raphael Diaz, C Darroll Powe.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Rick Nash. The top forward will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing postseason in which the 2002 No. 1 draft notched only three goals and 10 points in 25 games and heard boos from the crowd. The 30-year-old left wing has come to training camp looking thinner and fitter as he heads into his third season with the Rangers. Nash has four seasons left for big money on his current contract, so there is plenty of time for him to win over the Madison Square Garden faithful.
OUTLOOK: The Rangers will go as far as goalie Henrik Lundqvist, ''The King,'' will take them. The team has undergone major changes since the run to the finals, but with the strong core of returning veterans such as Nash, Martin St. Louis, and defensemen Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh, fortified by newcomers Dan Boyle, Lee Stempniak and Ryan Malone, New York could again be a tough out in the playoffs. A new captain is expected to be announced at the start of the season to replace the trio of alternate captains that took leadership roles after former captain Ryan Callahan was traded to Tampa Bay late last season for St. Louis. | | PHILADELPHIA: LAST SEASON: 42-30-10, 94 points. Finished 3rd in Metropolitan Division. Sixth in Eastern Conference. Lost to New York Rangers in first round of playoffs.
COACH: Craig Berube, 2nd season with Flyers (42-27-10); 2nd overall in NHL.
ADDED: C R.J. Umberger, LW Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, D Michael Del Zotto
LOST: LW Scott Hartnell, RW Steve Downie, LW Tye McGinn, C Kris Newbury, D Erik Gustafsson, D Bruno Gervais
PLAYER TO WATCH: Flyers center Claude Giroux. Back earlier than expected from an unspecified lower-body injury, Giroux needs to be in top form if the Flyers expect to play deep into the postseason. Giroux was selected last season as a Hart Trophy finalist, the league's MVP award. He matched a career high with 28 goals and finished third in the NHL scoring race (86 points).
OUTLOOK: The Flyers need Steve Mason to play again like a true No. 1 goalie and for Giroux to play like an MVP candidate for the Flyers to have a shot at ending their Stanley Cup drought. The Flyers are 0 for the Cup since they won consecutive Cups in 1974 and 1975 and seemed poised to build a dynasty. Only the Toronto Maple Leafs (1966-67) have suffered longer than any other team that was won at least one Stanley Cup. |

*Rangers-Flyers Preview* ========================
By TOM CASTRO STATS Senior Editor
New York (38-16-6) at Philadelphia (26-25-11), 8:00 p.m. EDT
Though the New York Rangers have hardly been at their best this month, they've figured out how to end up in the win column so often that they've climbed into a tight battle for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division.
The same can't be said for the Philadelphia Flyers, who haven't managed to find a groove despite their precarious position in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
The Rangers look to complete a season sweep of the Flyers when the bitter division rivals meet Saturday night in Philadelphia.
New York (38-16-6) has gone 8-0-2 in its past 10 and 11-1-2 in 14 after defeating Arizona 4-3 at home Thursday. The Rangers won despite falling behind 3-1 in the first period and getting outshot 40-38 by the Coyotes, who lost their eighth in a row.
Chris Kreider and Lee Stempniak each scored twice and Cam Talbot made 37 saves.
"If you want to be near the top of the standings in this league, you need to find ways to win," Kreider said. "That was definitely a bit of a nail-biter and a little too close for comfort, but it speaks volumes of the leadership and character."
The Rangers certainly haven't made it easy on themselves. Talbot allowed a first-minute goal for the third time since taking over for injured No. 1 goalie Henrik Lundqvist, and New York has given up three or more nine times in the past 14 contests.
Despite that, the club has won four in a row and is pushing the Islanders for first place in the Metropolitan.
"We pride ourselves in coming out the right way, and our first periods have been good, but (Thursday) for whatever reason we didn't start out the way we wanted," coach Alain Vigneault told the team's official website. "Again, this game is about finding ways to win and that's what we did."
The Flyers (26-25-11) desperately need to starting doing it. Philadelphia is struggling to keep pace with Boston in the fight for the second wild card and also needs to pass Florida while holding off Ottawa.
The club hasn't displayed a sense of urgency of late, losing two in a row and going 3-3-3 in its last nine. The Flyers fell 3-2 at Toronto on Thursday, the seventh time in that span they've managed two or fewer non-shootout goals.
This one wasn't for lack of trying, as Philadelphia held a 49-17 shot advantage but was mostly frustrated by Jonathan Bernier. The Flyers posted their highest shot total in a regulation loss since 1991.
"We feel like we deserve better, but at the same time those games are going to happen," center Brayden Schenn said. "Some nights you are going to play great and get no points and other nights you may play poorly and get points."
The Flyers haven't come all that close to earning any against the Rangers this season, getting blanked twice and losing the most recent matchup 5-2 at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 29. New York has won four consecutive meetings and five of six, limiting Philadelphia to four goals in the defeats.
Talbot, expected to be in net, earned both shutouts of the Flyers this season and is 2-1-0 with a 0.67 goals-against average in three career starts in the series.
