| | | NASHVILLE: LAST SEASON: 38-32-12, 88 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 10th in the Western Conference.
COACH: Peter Laviolette, 1st season with Predators, 389-282-25-63 overall.
ADDED: F James Neal, F Olli Jokinen, F Mike Ribeiro, F Derek Roy.
LOST: Coach Barry Trotz, goaltenders coach Mitch Korn, F Patric Hornqvist, F Nick Spaling.
PLAYER TO WATCH: G Pekka Rinne. Even with Ribeiro needing to prove his personal issues have been handled, Rinne is the two-time Vezina Trophy finalist who anchors Nashville's defense. He only played 24 games last season after an infection in his surgically-repaired hip needed more surgery, keeping him on crutches for weeks. Rinne went 3-0-1 in his final four games and was the MVP of the World Championships.
OUTLOOK: The Predators missed the playoffs by three points with Rinne missing much of last season. Laviolette is expected to boost the Predators' offense and take advantage of the experienced forwards added during the offseason, and general manager David Poile has made it clear they must reach the playoffs. | | NY RANGERS: LAST SEASON: 45-31-6, 96 points. Finished 2nd in Metropolitan Division, 5th in Eastern Conference. Lost to Los Angeles Kings in Stanley Cup finals.
COACH: Alain Vigneault, 2nd season with Rangers (45-31-6); 13th overall in NHL (467-319-102).
ADDED: D Dan Boyle, D Mike Kostka, D Matt Hunwick, C Chris Mueller, LW Tanner Glass, G Cedrick Desjardins, C Matthew Lombardi, RW Lee Stempniak, LW Ryan Malone.
LOST: C Brad Richards, RW Derek Dorsett, C Brian Boyle, D Anton Stralman, LW Benoit Pouliot, D Justin Falk, RW Arron Asham, LW Daniel Carcillo, D Raphael Diaz, C Darroll Powe.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Rick Nash. The top forward will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing postseason in which the 2002 No. 1 draft notched only three goals and 10 points in 25 games and heard boos from the crowd. The 30-year-old left wing has come to training camp looking thinner and fitter as he heads into his third season with the Rangers. Nash has four seasons left for big money on his current contract, so there is plenty of time for him to win over the Madison Square Garden faithful.
OUTLOOK: The Rangers will go as far as goalie Henrik Lundqvist, ''The King,'' will take them. The team has undergone major changes since the run to the finals, but with the strong core of returning veterans such as Nash, Martin St. Louis, and defensemen Dan Girardi and Ryan McDonagh, fortified by newcomers Dan Boyle, Lee Stempniak and Ryan Malone, New York could again be a tough out in the playoffs. A new captain is expected to be announced at the start of the season to replace the trio of alternate captains that took leadership roles after former captain Ryan Callahan was traded to Tampa Bay late last season for St. Louis. |

*Predators-Rangers Preview* ===========================
By JOHN KOSIK STATS Editor
Nashville (41-15-7) at New York (38-17-6), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Dropping two in a row hasn't happened much to the Nashville Predators this season. In fact, they nearly made it to March without suffering back-to-back regulation losses.
The New York Rangers, who could debut a solid trade acquisition against Nashville, are also coming off what has lately become a regulation rarity.
The NHL-leading Predators will try to extend a roughly 15-year trend of solid play at Madison Square Garden on Monday night, while the Rangers look to shake off their first regulation loss in three weeks and forge a tie atop the Metropolitan Division.
Nashville (41-15-7) had dropped two in a row only three times but hadn't done it in regulation before a 4-2 loss to Minnesota on Thursday and a 4-3 defeat against Detroit on Saturday. Those contests also marked the club's first back-to-back losses at home.
The Predators entered the third with a 3-2 lead but allowed two goals on just seven shots in the period. They outshot Detroit 40-25 overall.
"They scored four goals," said coach Peter Laviolette, whose team has allowed the first goal in seven straight. "I thought we played good, but stopped playing in the third period. It wasn't a lot of easy ice and we just came out on the short side."
The Rangers may have All-Star defenseman Keith Yandle available as they look to hand the Predators their first three-game skid since last March. Yandle was acquired from Arizona on Sunday for defenseman John Moore, a top prospect and two draft picks.
The 28-year-old was the Coyotes' leading scorer with 41 points and has one year remaining on a five-year, $26 million contract.
New York was busy Sunday, making two other moves for a pair of forwards. They picked up Carl Klingberg from Winnipeg in exchange for forward Lee Stempniak, then acquired James Sheppard from San Jose for a fourth-round draft pick.
Sheppard had five goals and 11 assists in 57 games with the Sharks while Klingberg has spent most of the season in the AHL.
Since giving up nine goals while winning five straight from Feb. 7-17 - a streak that began with a 3-2 home win over the Rangers - Nashville has gone 2-3-1 with 19 goals allowed and is 2 for 20 on the power play in that span.
While Pekka Rinne remains a strong Vezina Trophy candidate, he's stumbled a bit with four losses in five starts. He has a 3.20 goals-against average in that time - well higher than his career-best 2.07 overall.
Nashville could be poised to break out of its funk considering its road record against the Rangers (38-17-6). The Predators lost their first two at the Garden after entering the league in 1998, but since then have won six of eight in the Big Apple.
New York failed to earn at least a point for the first time in 11 games with a 4-2 loss at Philadelphia on Saturday - its first regulation loss since Feb. 7 in Nashville. J.T. Miller and John Moore scored, but New York allowed two unanswered goals in the third to snap a five-game road winning streak.
"We didn't have the puck a lot tonight, didn't win a lot of battles, and spent too much time in our own zone," captain Ryan McDonagh said.
Despite the loss, the Rangers had an outstanding February that was played mostly without Henrik Lundqvist, who remains out with a throat injury. Since the last time their star goalie played Feb. 2, they have gone 9-2-2 to surge up the Metropolitan standings.
With a victory over the Predators, New York - which has won six of eight at home - will tie the rival Islanders for first place.
Backup Cam Talbot has been far from great, posting a 2.80 GAA while starting 12 of the last 13 games - well higher than the 2.16 he had while backup up Lundqvist in the season's first four months. But he's 8-2-2 in this stretch thanks to the Rangers averaging a league-best 3.71 goals in February.
Talbot made 20 saves in Nashville last month, while Rinne - who has never started at MSG - stopped 30.
