| | | CAROLINA: LAST SEASON: 36-35-11, 83 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 13th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Bill Peters, 1st season with Hurricanes; 1st overall in NHL.
ADDED: C Brad Malone, D Tim Gleason.
LOST: C Manny Malhotra, G Justin Peters, C Brett Sutter.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Eric Staal. The captain is coming off the most disappointing season of his career, with his 21 goals his fewest in an 82-game season since he was a rookie a decade ago. With a salary of $9.25 million, he's one of the highest-paid players in the game but he managed just one power-play goal last season. He had sports hernia surgery during the offseason, and a fresh start with the detail-driven Peters could be just what Staal needs.
OUTLOOK: No team in the current alignment of the Eastern Conference has a longer playoff drought than the Hurricanes, who haven't made the postseason since 2009. How quickly Peters' message of focus and personal accountability gets through to a largely unchanged roster will determine whether that streak finally ends this season. | | NEW JERSEY: LAST SEASON: 35-29-18, 88 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference.
COACH: Peter DeBoer, 4th season with Devils (102-76-34); 7th overall in NHL (205-183-70).
ADDED: LW Mike Cammalleri, LW Martin Havlat, C Scott Gomez, G Scott Clemmensen.
LOST: G Martin Brodeur, D Anton Volchenkov, D Mark Fayne.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jaromir Jagr. Led the team in scoring with 24 goals and 43 assists in remarkable season in which he played in all 82. Can he do it again at 42-years-old. If he does, the Devils have a shot at getting back into the playoffs for the first time since reaching NHL Finals in 2011-12.
OUTLOOK: After finishing with fourth fewest goals in the league, the Devils hope free-agent signees Cammalleri (26 goals) and Havlat (12 goals in 48 games) can boost the scoring, along with Adam Henrique, who scored a career-high 25-goals last season. With Broduer not re-signed, Cory Schnedier will get most of the work in goal after posting a 1.97 goals against average in 46 games last season. Defense allowed 208 goals, ninth best in the league. |

*Hurricanes-Devils Preview* ===========================
By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer
Carolina (9-20-4) at New Jersey (12-17-6), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Frustrations continue to grow for the offensively challenged Carolina Hurricanes, who can't seem to catch a break.
The New Jersey Devils haven't had much to celebrate themselves.
Carolina tries to avoid a ninth loss in 10 games and fifth in a row against the Devils as these Metropolitan Division bottom feeders meet at the Prudential Center on Tuesday night.
The Hurricanes are 4-14-1 in their last 19 and have scored 12 goals during a 1-7-1 stretch - with four of the goals coming in a win over Toronto on Thursday. Carolina (9-20-4) has been limited to an average of 2.0 non-shootout goals on the season to rank 29th in the league.
The Hurricanes suffered a home-and-home sweep at the hands of the New York Rangers over the weekend, falling 3-2 in a shootout on Saturday and 1-0 on the road Sunday. Carolina got two key pieces back from injury in John-Michael Liles and Alexander Semin in the second of those defeats, but was outshot 31-18 in posting its second-lowest total this season.
"You try to keep the mood upbeat and keep telling guys it's all part of a learning process," Liles said. "We're still looking to find the scoring touch."
Anton Khudobin fell to 0-8-2 with a 2.91 goals-against average despite turning in one of his best games Sunday with 30 saves.
"We struggle to score, period. When you get a good goaltending performance, you'd like to get a point, if not two, out of it," coach Bill Peters told the team's official website. "Dobby has done that for us a few times this year, but unfortunately we haven't scored enough for him. It's frustrating, for sure. ... We've got to continue to get better. We've got to work."
The Devils (12-17-6) also came up empty their last time out, falling 4-0 to Washington on Saturday to get shut out for the second time in three games. Cory Schneider stopped 17 of 20 shots for New Jersey, 1-4-2 in its last seven with 10 non-shootout goals in that stretch.
The Devils are seventh in the division with 30 points, eight ahead of the Eastern Conference-worst Hurricanes.
"If you are going to move up in the standings you have to go on a run," Schneider said. "Every team seems to do it or has a streak where it gets them in the mix. It almost seems like for the last season and a half we've had trouble stringing together a hot streak. Again we can talk about it all we want but we just have to go out and do it."
Facing Carolina could be just what New Jersey needs to regroup. The Devils have outscored the Hurricanes 15-8 during a four-game winning streak in the series, including a 2-1 road victory Dec. 8 in this season's first meeting.
Jaromir Jagr had a goal and an assist while Schneider made 17 of his season-high 39 saves in the third period, improving to 4-1-0 with a 1.81 GAA against Carolina.
Jagr is tied with Adam Henrique for the team lead with 20 points, but he's been held without one in five consecutive home games. He has 113 points in 79 career games against Carolina, tied for his second-highest total against any franchise.
The Hurricanes could turn back to Cam Ward, who is 1-4-1 over a six-start stretch but has allowed one or two goals in four of his last five appearances.
Ward has gone 4-10-1 with a 2.86 GAA in his last 15 games against the Devils, including 2-6-1 with a 2.62 mark in New Jersey.
Carolina is an NHL-worst 3-13-2 on the road, having dropping four straight there by a combined 12-3.
