KEY GAME INFORMATION
DETROIT: DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Red Wings seem to have set themselves up for success as they shift to the Eastern Conference.
Detroit added Daniel Alfredsson and Stephen Weiss to a roster that includes most of the key players from last year's team. The Red Wings extended the franchise's playoff streak to 22 last season and were a win away from eliminating Chicago and advancing to the conference finals.
General manager Ken Holland accomplished his No. 1 goal of the offseason, re-signing superstar Pavel Datsyuk to prevent him from being a free agent next summer. Holland also boosted the team's ability to score with a surprising acquisition, adding Alfredsson after he spent his entire career with the Ottawa Senators.
Detroit opens the season at home Oct. 2 against Buffalo.
EDMONTON:
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - The Edmonton Oilers have been stuck in rebuilding mode for some time, but the hope this season is that this youthful bunch - laced with first-round picks - returns to a place this franchise used to dominate.
The postseason.
Indeed, the Oilers - a once-dynastic franchise - has not qualified for the playoffs in seven straight seasons. But there is a benefit to Edmonton's on-ice failings: The Oilers have been able to stockpile high-end talent in defenseman Justin Schultz and forwards Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Nail Yakupov, Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle.
Many inside and outside the organization believe Edmonton's collection of talent will eventually lead the Oilers back to a Stanley Cup, which would be their sixth. For now, though, a playoff berth would do just fine.
Edmonton opens against Winnipeg on Oct. 1.

*Red Wings-Oilers Preview* ==========================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Detroit (8-4-2) at Edmonton (3-9-2), 10:00 p.m. EDT

After failing to win on a three-game homestand, the Detroit Red Wings are getting it together on the road.

They'll go for a third straight win on a four-game trip Saturday night in Edmonton, where they haven't suffered a regulation loss in over seven years.

Since Nov. 18, 2006, the Red Wings are 7-0-5 in Edmonton and have won 11 of their last 12 overall against the Oilers.

Detroit (8-4-2) followed Wednesday's 2-1 win in Vancouver with a 4-3 victory over Calgary on Friday. Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and an assist and Justin Abdelkader and Tomas Tatar scored third-period goals for the Red Wings, who had been held to seven goals in their previous five games.

"I thought we finished the second strong and had a real good third period," coach Mike Babcock said. "We controlled the third I thought hands down. There's no question you want to just keep going after them, and I thought we did that."

Although Jimmy Howard played Friday, Babcock may be tempted to start his No. 1 goalie on back-to-back nights. Howard is 9-0-0 with a 1.43 goals-against average and two shutouts in his last nine meetings with Edmonton.

The Oilers (3-9-2) are the only remaining Western Conference team with a single-digit point total. They've lost four straight (0-3-1) and have allowed a league-high 54 goals.

Dallas Eakins' team has totaled one goal in its last two games and lost 4-0 at home to Toronto on Tuesday.

"You look at that game and it was about who finishes chances and who doesn't tonight for me," Eakins said.

"I don't believe we were outcompeted, outhit, out-toughed, outshot. We were out-finished, that's what we were. We talked about that, the Toronto Maple Leafs, they're a team that doesn't have the puck a whole lot, they've been outshot a lot this season. But if you give them the opportunity, they will score. They have guys that can put it in the net and they showed that tonight."

The banged-up Oilers aren't getting a whole lot healthier, though goaltender Devan Dubnyk said he will likely return from an ankle injury.

"I'll be ready to go," Dubnyk told the team's official website. "We haven't talked about it yet but I'll be ready to go if that's what they want to do."

He has struggled when healthy, going 2-5-1 with a 4.01 goals-against average in nine games - eight starts.

Richard Bachman has started the last two games, stopping 22 shots against Toronto after a 47-save effort in a 2-1 shootout loss at Los Angeles on Sunday.

Already missing forwards Taylor Hall (knee) and Ryan Smyth (groin), the Oilers could also be without Justin Schultz, the team's top scoring defenseman who left Friday's practice with rib discomfort. They recalled Philip Larsen from AHL Oklahoma City.

Forward David Perron, fourth on the team nine points, missed the last game with an illness and is likely to miss another after undergoing an MRI on his neck.

One of the keys to Detroit's success in this series has been Henrik Zetterberg, who has one goal and nine assists during a seven-game point streak versus Edmonton.
