KEY GAME INFORMATION
ST LOUIS: ST. LOUIS (AP) - The advertising theme for the St. Louis Blues this season is ``Don't Stop Believing.''
The plea is appropriate. The front office and the franchise's loyal fan base are still awaiting results from a roster built around former high draft picks a few years ago.
The Blues have missed the playoffs four of the last five seasons, finishing 11th in the Western Conference and 10 points out last season.
The early going promises to be challenging. The first two games are at home, Oct. 8 against the Nashville Predators and Oct. 10 against the Chicago Blackhawks. But eight of the next nine are on the road.
DALLAS: DALLAS (AP) - Three straight non-playoff finishes leave the Dallas Stars in foreign territory.
Once a Pacific Division power, the Stars have reached their low point since moving to the Sun Belt in 1993, matching the longest playoff drought in club history by the 1973-76 Minnesota North Stars.
The Stars are in bankruptcy and still without a new owner, they lost leading scorer Brad Richards to free agency, and general manager Joe Nieuwendyk fired coach Marc Crawford at the end of last season.
But you're not hearing gloom and doom from Glen Gulutzan, promoted from the Stars' top minor league affiliate to succeed Crawford behind the bench with the aim of energizing the team.
There are some positives. The Stars improved their depth in the offseason with the signing of six veteran free agents, addressing an issue that led to their demise last season.
Down the stretch, Crawford leaned heavily on his top-end players, especially No. 1 goaltender Kari Lehtonen, and the team had little left in the tank when the Stars fell two points short of playoff qualification on the final day of the regular season.
To that end, Nieuwendyk brought in, among others, right wing Michael Ryder and defenseman Sheldon Souray. Ryder, who had eight goals and nine assists in 25 playoff games for the Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins last season, is ticketed for the top line with center Mike Ribeiro and left wing Brenden Morrow. The Stars are looking for Souray to take over for Richards as quarterback of a power play that finished 14th in the league last season.
Center Vernon Fiddler, a faceoff specialist, was also added, along with forwards Jake Dowell and Radek Dvorak, and defenseman Adam Pardy.
Nieuwendyk's hope is that those acquisitions make up at least in part for the loss of Richards, who registered 77 points in 72 games for Dallas last season before signing with the New York Rangers over the summer because the cash-strapped Stars were unable to offer a long-term deal.
For the Stars to contend, they'll need a big season from Jamie Benn, who had a breakout campaign in 2010-11. Benn is expected to center the second line with Steve Ott on the left wide and Loui Eriksson on the right.
``I think we recognize that he is a gifted young player who's going to be capable of raising the bar here,'' Nieuwendyk said of Benn, who had 22 goals and 34 assists last season after collecting 41 points as a rookie.
Fiddler, Dowell, Dvorak and Adam Burish all will have roles on the third and fourth lines.
``We have to be hard to and we're developing that,'' Gulutzan said. ``We have more depth and we have to utilize that. That's what we're reaching for here. We want that to be our identity, a hard-working team.''
On defense, Alex Goligoski and Stephane Robidas project as the top pair. Goligoski was acquired last February from the Pittsburgh Penguins in a trade that cost Dallas high-scoring left wing James Neal and top-six defenseman Matt Niskanen.
Goligoski impressed teammates in his 23 games with the Stars with five goals, 10 assists and solid puck-moving skills.
``He blew me away with how poised he was with the puck,'' Burish said. ``He never panics. He holds onto it for that extra second to make a play. He was almost like a fourth forward for us.''
Trevor Daley and Nicklas Grossman should comprise the second pair, with Souray, Pardy and holdover Mark Fistric also in the mix.
Lehtonen remains the starter after carrying a heavy workload with 69 games last season. He was 34-24-11 with a 2.55 goals-against, hardly spectacular numbers, but at least Lehtonen showed he could remain healthy after playing in only 58 games because of injuries in the previous two seasons.
Backup Andrew Raycroft should see more action than the 14 starts he made in 2010-11.
If the Stars are to return to the playoffs, they'll need contributions from up and down the lineup.
``The little detail things are going to add up. If we're great at those, we'll be a competitive team,'' Ott said. ``Our structure is going to be our backbone. Our competitive guys in our lineup will push the pace. Every single night you'll have a tough game against the Dallas Stars.''

*Blues-Stars Preview* =====================

By JON PALMIERI STATS Editor

St. Louis (48-21-11) at Dallas (42-34-5), 8:00 p.m. EDT

Having clinched their first division title in more than a decade with one of the best regular seasons in franchise history, the St. Louis Blues should have no problems with confidence.

Still, heading into the playoffs mired in a season-worst five-game losing streak would surely leave some doubt in their minds.

Hoping to get the necessary help to capture the top seed in the Western Conference, St. Louis will try to at least get back into the win column Saturday night when it visits the Dallas Stars in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The Blues (48-22-11) held a five-point lead over Vancouver less than a month ago in the race for the No. 1 seed in the West, but a 3-4-4 record down the stretch has dropped them two points behind the Canucks with one game left for each.

St. Louis controlled its own fate heading into Friday's home matchup with Phoenix, needing only wins in its final two games to clinch the No. 1 seed. However, the Coyotes killed off all seven St. Louis power plays and scored twice in the second period en route to a 4-1 victory.

"We didn't play the way we wanted to and we kind of got away from our game," Blues defenseman Alex Pietrangelo said. "That's kind of been our trend the last little bit and we've got to find a way to get it back on track."

For the third straight game, coach Ken Hitchcock's postgame remarks were brief and to the point.

"This is what happens when you play with skill ahead of work," Hitchcock said. "Their level of defensive and checking commitment confused and frustrated our players.

"We wanted the game to be easier and it wasn't."

With their third straight home loss - the first coming to league-worst Columbus - the Blues' overall skid reached four (0-2-2) and left Vancouver needing only one point against Edmonton on Saturday night to secure the West's top spot even with a St. Louis victory.

Hitchcock could switch to Jaroslav Halak in net after Brian Elliott lost to the Coyotes. Halak is 0-3-0 with a 3.59 goals-against average in his last three starts after posting a 1.46 GAA during a 9-0-1 run. He stopped 22 shots in a 1-0 home win over the Stars on Jan. 16, improving to 2-0-1 with a 2.01 GAA against them this season.

Dallas (42-34-5) will miss the playoffs for the fourth straight season after it was officially eliminated with Thursday's 2-0 loss at Nashville.

"We just didn't get the result we wanted, but we played hard," coach Glen Gulutzan said. "I liked the way we competed. It was a one goal game, really who could get that one in? They managed to do so."

The Stars have been outscored 15-4 during a four-game losing streak - one shy of their season high.

With nothing left to play for but pride, the Stars recalled three players from AHL Texas on Friday and will insert them into Saturday's lineup. Defenseman Brenden Dillon and right wing Scott Glennie will make their NHL debuts, while defenseman Jordie Benn - brother of Dallas left wing Jamie - will play for the first time since Jan. 5.

Richard Bachman will start in goal, ending Kari Lehtonen's run of 10 consecutive starts.

"Bachman will be in goal and you're going see a few of our young guys," Gulutzan told the team's official website.

The Blues have won two straight against the Stars after a five-game losing streak in the series. St. Louis, though, has lost three in a row in Dallas - all by 3-2 scores.
