| | | PHILADELPHIA: LAST SEASON: 42-30-10, 94 points. Finished 3rd in Metropolitan Division. Sixth in Eastern Conference. Lost to New York Rangers in first round of playoffs.
COACH: Craig Berube, 2nd season with Flyers (42-27-10); 2nd overall in NHL.
ADDED: C R.J. Umberger, LW Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, D Michael Del Zotto
LOST: LW Scott Hartnell, RW Steve Downie, LW Tye McGinn, C Kris Newbury, D Erik Gustafsson, D Bruno Gervais
PLAYER TO WATCH: Flyers center Claude Giroux. Back earlier than expected from an unspecified lower-body injury, Giroux needs to be in top form if the Flyers expect to play deep into the postseason. Giroux was selected last season as a Hart Trophy finalist, the league's MVP award. He matched a career high with 28 goals and finished third in the NHL scoring race (86 points).
OUTLOOK: The Flyers need Steve Mason to play again like a true No. 1 goalie and for Giroux to play like an MVP candidate for the Flyers to have a shot at ending their Stanley Cup drought. The Flyers are 0 for the Cup since they won consecutive Cups in 1974 and 1975 and seemed poised to build a dynasty. Only the Toronto Maple Leafs (1966-67) have suffered longer than any other team that was won at least one Stanley Cup. | | CHICAGO: LAST SEASON: 46-21-15, 107 points. Finished third in Central Division, lost to Los Angeles Kings in Western Conference final.
COACH: Joel Quenneville, 7th season with the Blackhawks, 268-127-59; 18th in the NHL, 706-410-77-100.
ADDED: C Brad Richards, G Michael Leighton.
LOST: LW Brandon Bollig, D Sheldon Brookbank.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Brandon Saad. The talented winger was terrific in the final part of the playoff series against the Kings, collecting three goals and four assists in the last four games. Playing on a line with Patrick Kane and newcomer Brad Richards, he could do even better than his career highs of 19 goals and 28 assists from last season.
OUTLOOK: It's Stanley Cup or bust for the loaded Blackhawks, who have no glaring weaknesses. They should be among the league's highest-scoring teams again this season, and Norris Trophy winner Duncan Keith leads a solid group of defensemen. The Central could be hockey's toughest division, but the Blackhawks are a legitimate threat for their third NHL title in the last six seasons. |

*Flyers-Blackhawks Preview* ===========================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Philadelphia (1-2-2) at Chicago (3-0-1), 8:30 p.m. EDT
After rallying to end their worst start in six seasons, the Philadelphia Flyers will attempt to top two of the NHL's leading franchises on the final stops of their road trip.
The first of those games comes Tuesday night against the Chicago Blackhawks, one of three teams without a regulation loss.
Philadelphia went winless in its first four games for the first time since going 0-3-3 in 2008-09 before ending that drought with Saturday's 6-5 overtime victory over Dallas to open the trip. Claude Giroux scored the winning power-play goal after Michael Raffl tied the game with 3:53 left in regulation.
"To kind of steal that game from Dallas feels pretty good," defenseman Mark Streit said. "Hopefully it gives us a lot of energy and confidence."
Coach Craig Berube would like to see even better efforts when the Flyers (1-2-2) face Chicago (3-0-1) and Pittsburgh (3-1-0) on back-to-back nights.
"We did a lot of good things out there. Had a real good attack, shot the puck well, lot of opportunities," he said. "But we got to clean up some of the mistakes we make. They're unacceptable."
Corey Crawford shined again for the Blackhawks on Saturday against Nashville, but they had trouble scoring despite a 37-20 shot advantage. Jonathan Toews' short-handed goal finished off a 2-1 overtime victory.
Crawford lowered his goals-against average to 1.66 in his fourth start. The lone loss was 2-1 in overtime to Calgary on Wednesday in which the Blackhawks had a 50-18 edge on shots.
"I don't think it's about the initial shot. It's more about the second effort, having traffic at the net," Toews said. "We (need) some ugly goals, get some offense going."
The Blackhawks had few problems offensively during the most recent visit from Philadelphia on Dec. 11, as seven players scored in a 7-2 victory.
Chicago has five wins in its last six home games against the Flyers, including three in the 2010 Stanley Cup finals, but it's 3-15-1 with one tie in the last 20 overall regular-season meetings.
Philadelphia rallied from an early two-goal deficit for a 3-2 overtime victory in the latest meeting March 18. Giroux scored the winner to give him one goal and eight assists in his last four matchups.
The Flyers captain has two goals and five assists in his last four games.
Having to consecutive nights, Philadelphia might opt to give Ray Emery the start against his former team. Steve Mason is 0-6-1 with a 4.04 GAA in his last eight appearances against Chicago.
Emery, 1-0-1 with a 2.73 GAA in two appearances this season, started both games against the Blackhawks in 2013-14. He was pulled Dec. 11 after giving up six goals on 18 shots and made 23 saves in March.
Andrew Shaw has scored in each of his three games against Philadelphia, and Patrick Sharp has one goal and four assists in the last three meetings with his former team. Marian Hossa has three goals and nine assists in his last nine regular-season matchups.
