KEY GAME INFORMATION
VANCOUVER: LAST SEASON: 36-35-11, finished 12th in the Western Conference and missed the playoffs.
COACH: Willie Desjardins, first season with the Canucks.
ADDED: C Nick Bonino, LW Derek Dorsett, G Ryan Miller, D Luca Sbisa, RW Radim Vrbata.
LOST: RW Zac Dalpe, D Jason Garrison, C Ryan Kesler, C Mike Santorelli, C Jordan Schroeder.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Ryan Miller. On June 29, 2013, the Canucks had a goaltending tandem of Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider. When Vancouver's season ended 288 days later, the duo in net was Eddie Lack and Jacob Markstrom after Schneider and Luongo were traded. In a combined 45 games with Vancouver, Lack and Markstrom were 17-19-5 with a 2.39 goals against average and .908 save percentage. Miller, who was signed to a three-year, $18 million free agent deal, has a 2.55 GAA and .916 save percentage the last four seasons.
OUTLOOK: The dismissals of coach John Tortorella and Kesler, traded to Anaheim, can be seen as addition by subtraction. Kesler's in-season trade request became a distraction for a team whose 2013-14 campaign was an unmitigated failure. So the Canucks can do nothing but improve in 2014-15. Will there be enough improvement to qualify for a playoff berth? That may be too much to ask for a team in the tough Western Conference.
DALLAS: LAST SEASON: 40-31-11, 91 points, 5th Central Division. Made Western Conference playoffs as wild card, lost first-round playoff series in six games to top-seeded Anaheim.
COACH: Lindy Ruff, 2nd season with Stars, 40-31-11; 17th season overall in NHL, was 571-432-162 in Buffalo.
ADDED: C Jason Spezza, RW Ales Hemsky; G Anders Lindback, RW Patrick Eaves.
LOST: RW Alex Chiasson, D Aaron Rome, LW Ray Whitney.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Jamie Benn. In his first season as the Stars captain, the 25-year-old Canadian ranked eighth in the NHL with 79 points and ninth with 34 goals. Both were career highs, as was his plus-21 rating. Benn has increasingly accepted his role as a leader on a team filled with plenty of 20-something players, and is part of a dynamic scoring line with Tyler Seguin.
OUTLOOK: With the experience of a hard-fought first-round series in their first season under veteran Ruff, the Stars expect to do more than just make the playoffs this time around. That is a reasonable goal with their added scoring punch. With Benn and Seguin on the front line, the Stars will have another line with 31-year-old former Ottawa teammates Spezza and Hemsky likely together.

*Canucks-Stars Preview* =======================

By KEVIN CHROUST STATS Writer

Vancouver (3-1-0) at Dallas (2-1-2), 8:30 p.m. EDT

The Vancouver Canucks opened with three wins over the bottom teams in the Western Conference from a season ago. Their first game against a playoff club didn't go quite as well.

The Canucks head out on a three-game road trip against teams fresh off postseason appearances, beginning Tuesday night against the Dallas Stars.

After winning in Calgary and beating Edmonton twice, the Canucks suffered Saturday's 4-2 home loss to Tampa Bay. Chris Higgins and Alexander Edler scored their first goals, and focus now shifts to bouncing back from their first loss under coach Willie Desjardins.

"These are going to be important kinds of games, so a good chance to come together, get on the road ... a good first test as we kind of had a little mini-swing," goaltender Ryan Miller told the Canucks' official website. "(Dallas) is a good, fast team, a lot of skill up front, the kind of team where we have to be patient, play a good system."

While captain Henrik Sedin was held without a point for the first time Saturday, Daniel Sedin extended his season-opening point streak with an assist, giving him seven points.

Dallas (2-1-2) has given Vancouver (3-1-0) problems recently with four straight wins and a 17-4 scoring advantage. The final two meetings of last season were played in Dallas and resulted in 4-1 and 6-1 victories with Tyler Seguin producing three goals and four assists. Jamie Benn had a goal and two assists in the latest matchup March 6 to give him 10 points during a seven-game point streak against the Canucks.

Seguin has been nearly as hot lately with four goals and four assists in his last three games. A career-best four-assist performance, though, wasn't enough in Saturday's 6-5 overtime loss to a Philadelphia team that entered winless.

Benn scored for a third straight game and has six points in that span, while Jason Spezza had a goal and three assists to give him six points in two games.

Any personal numbers were overshadowed by the Stars blowing a two-goal advantage entering the third period.

"We lose that game by not protecting a two-goal lead," Spezza told the team's official website. "We have to get better. If we want to be an elite team in this league, when we get a two-goal lead in the third we need to learn to lock those down."

Miller figures to be back in goal after backup Eddie Lack played against the Lightning. Miller shut out the Oilers on Friday with 28 saves to improve to 3-0-0 with a 1.95 goals-against average with his new team. He went 0-3-1 with a 3.49 GAA in four starts against Dallas a season ago.

The Stars' Kari Lehtonen allowed six goals on 37 shots against the Flyers, but he's 4-0-0 with a 0.95 GAA in his last five against Vancouver.

Stars defenseman Patrik Nemeth is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season after leaving the Philadelphia game because of a right arm laceration.

The Stars will also be without right wing Valeri Nichushkin, who landed on injured reserve Sunday because of a groin injury. They recalled defenseman Jyrki Jokipakka from AHL Texas.

Vancouver defenseman Ryan Stanton missed the Tampa Bay game with a lower-body injury.
