| | | NY ISLANDERS: LAST SEASON: 34-37-11, 79 points. Missed the playoffs by finishing eighth in Metropolitan Division and 14th in Eastern Conference.
COACH: Jack Capuano, fifth season with Islanders (118-120-39).
ADDED: G Jaroslav Halak, G Chad Johnson, C Cory Conacher, RW Jack Skille, LW Harry Zolnierczyk, C Mikhail Grabovski, LW Nikolai Kulemin.
LOST: G Evgeni Nabokov, D Radek Martinek.
PLAYER TO WATCH: John Tavares. The 24-year-old star center with the C on his sweater is back after missing New York's final 22 games last season due to a knee injury sustained while playing for Canada in the Olympics. He was second on the team with 66 points - including 24 goals - despite playing in only 59 games. The Islanders have made the playoffs only once (2013) since he was selected with the No. 1 pick in the 2009 draft.
OUTLOOK: This will be a year of nostalgia for the Islanders as they play their final season at the Nassau Coliseum - their home since joining the NHL in 1972 where four straight Stanley Cup champions were built from 1980-83. They will move to Brooklyn's Barclays Center next season. Since 2004, the Islanders have reached the playoffs just twice (2007 and 2013) and were eliminated in the first round both times. The task doesn't get any easier in the eight-team Metropolitan Division with perennial powerhouse Pittsburgh and the rival New York Rangers, who reached the Stanley Cup finals last season. Halak will shoulder a lot of the burden, along with Tavares, as he replaces veteran Evgeni Nabokov in goal. | | BOSTON: LAST SEASON: 54-19-9, 117 points, most in the NHL. Lost to Montreal Canadiens in second round of playoffs.
COACH: Claude Julien, eighth season in Boston (310-165-65); 12th overall in NHL.
ADDED: F Simon Gagne, G Niklas Svedberg.
LOST: F Jarome Iginla, F Shawn Thornton, G Chad Johnson.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Defenseman Zdeno Chara is 37, and it's not clear how long his 6-foot-9 body can hold up. He played in 77 games, but had the least time on the ice (in a non-lockout season) since his arrival in Boston in 2006, and his fewest points and penalty minutes as a Bruin, too. He finished the season with a broken finger. Still, he was a finalist for the Norris Trophy, which he won in 2009.
OUTLOOK: After winning the Stanley Cup in 2011 and returning to the finals two seasons later, the Bruins posted the NHL's best record last season but were knocked out of the playoffs by the rival Canadiens in seven games in the second round. The Bruins return essentially the same team, including Selke Trophy winner Patrice Bergeron and Vezina winner Tuukka Rask, who led the league with seven shutouts, finished second with a .930 save percentage and was fourth with a 2.03 goals-against average. |

*Islanders-Bruins Preview* ==========================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer
New York (4-2-0) at Boston (4-4-0), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Johnny Boychuk had a feeling the Boston Bruins were looking to move him toward the end of the preseason, but that didn't prevent him from feeling as if he'd experienced a "bad breakup" after being dealt to the New York Islanders.
Though his former teammates were sad to see Boychuk go as well, they are more concerned with the defenseman's desire to help the Islanders end their skid.
Boychuk returns to TD Garden on Thursday night as New York looks to avoid a third straight defeat.
Up against the salary cap, Boston traded Boychuk and his $3.4 million cap hit to the Islanders on Oct. 4 for a 2015 second-round pick and conditional 2016 selection. Boychuk, who will be an unrestricted free agent after the season, helped the Bruins win the Stanley Cup in 2011 and make another appearance in the finals in 2013.
"We lost a good person and a good player, and you're always happy that he's doing well," Boston coach Claude Julien told the team's official website. "This is a business, guys. Once the puck's dropped, you've got to fight for your team and fight your own battles. You can be friends afterward and chit-chat before or after, but during the game itself - if you don't do it, he will."
Boychuk, who had a career-best 23 points with Boston last season, had two goals and four assists during the first three of the Islanders' four-game winning streak to start the season. He's been held off the scoresheet in the last three.
"I'm sure it'll be a big game for him, and for us," Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid said. "We need to just do our thing and treat it like we're playing the New York Islanders - just worry about that, worry about ourselves."
Boston (4-4-0) is coming off a 5-3 win over San Jose on Tuesday, when Gregory Campbell scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third before David Krejci added an empty netter.
The Bruins have won three of four following a three-game skid in which they were outscored 8-2.
"You can't be panicking at the start of the year when you know what you've got, and what you're going through," Julien said. "We still have a lot of work to do, but I like the direction we're going in."
The Islanders (4-2-0) are staying positive despite having dropped two straight, falling 3-1 at Pittsburgh on Saturday before Tuesday's 5-2 loss to Toronto. Nick Leddy and John Tavares scored in the first period against the Maple Leafs, but New York gave up four in the second as goaltender Jaroslav Halak was pulled.
"It's a long season," Tavares said. "After four games we weren't winning the Stanley Cup, and after six games we're not winning it. We're disappointed with our effort and our overall game, but tomorrow is a day to get better and we have a couple of big games this week, so we have to be ready and we have to bounce back."
Halak could be back in net for this contest. He's 8-3-0 with a 1.86 goals-against average in his career against the Bruins.
Boston could counter with Tuukka Rask, who made 31 saves against the Sharks. Tavares scored twice as Rask gave up each goal in a 5-3 loss the last time he faced New York on Dec. 31.
New York had won three straight meetings before Boston's 6-3 victory in the last matchup Jan. 27.
"They're highly-skilled," Julien said. "They've given us our fair share of difficulty in the last year or so."
