KEY GAME INFORMATION
SAN JOSE: LAST SEASON: 51-22-9, 111 points. Lost to Los Angeles in first round of playoffs.
COACH: Todd McLellan, 7th season with Sharks, 271-130-57; seventh overall in NHL.
ADDED: F John Scott, F Tye McGinn, D Taylor Fedun.
LOST: D Dan Boyle, D Brad Stuart, F Marty Havlat.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Joe Thornton. Despite finishing second in the league in assists last season, Thornton was stripped of his captaincy this summer in response to the Sharks' playoff collapse against Los Angeles. San Jose became the fourth NHL team to lose a best-of-seven series after winning the first three games. That prompted a search for new leaders. Thornton expressed no desire to leave San Jose but how he reacts to the new role and how he plays this season will be key questions going forward.
OUTLOOK: The Sharks began the offseason with general manager Doug Wilson talking of rebuilding and becoming a ''tomorrow'' team after being a Stanley Cup contender for most of the past decade. Wilson has altered his stance a bit and the players still believe this team can compete with the other powers out West. Much of the success will hinge on continued improvement from younger core players like Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Logan Couture and Tomas Hertl; Brent Burns' move back to defense from forward; and more depth on the bottom two lines to take pressure off Thornton and Patrick Marleau.
BOSTON: LAST SEASON: 54-19-9, 117 points, most in the NHL. Lost to Montreal Canadiens in second round of playoffs.
COACH: Claude Julien, eighth season in Boston (310-165-65); 12th overall in NHL.
ADDED: F Simon Gagne, G Niklas Svedberg.
LOST: F Jarome Iginla, F Shawn Thornton, G Chad Johnson.
PLAYER TO WATCH: Defenseman Zdeno Chara is 37, and it's not clear how long his 6-foot-9 body can hold up. He played in 77 games, but had the least time on the ice (in a non-lockout season) since his arrival in Boston in 2006, and his fewest points and penalty minutes as a Bruin, too. He finished the season with a broken finger. Still, he was a finalist for the Norris Trophy, which he won in 2009.
OUTLOOK: After winning the Stanley Cup in 2011 and returning to the finals two seasons later, the Bruins posted the NHL's best record last season but were knocked out of the playoffs by the rival Canadiens in seven games in the second round. The Bruins return essentially the same team, including Selke Trophy winner Patrice Bergeron and Vezina winner Tuukka Rask, who led the league with seven shutouts, finished second with a .930 save percentage and was fourth with a 2.03 goals-against average.

*Sharks-Bruins Preview* =======================

San Jose (4-1-1) at Boston (3-4-0), 7:00 p.m. EDT

Joe Thornton never lost in his returns to Boston with the San Jose Sharks until last season.

Thornton and the Sharks look to cap a five-game trip on a high note Tuesday night against the Bruins.

Thornton, who played for the Bruins from 1997-2005, is off to a strong start with six points for San Jose (4-1-1), which is 2-1-1 on this trip. He had been 4-0 as a visitor to Boston until a 2-1 loss Oct. 24 in a captivating early season showdown.

David Krejci scored with less than a second remaining to give the Bruins the victory that day. The Sharks suffered their first regulation loss after an 8-0-1 start.

That contest pitted top goaltenders Tuukka Rask and Finnish countryman Antti Niemi, and they also dueled in a 1-0 road win for Boston on Jan. 11 in which Rask made 26 saves. It's uncertain if either will start Tuesday, however.

Niemi and Alex Stalock have split six starts this season, with both posting 2.27 goals-against averages. Niemi, though, has won all three of his outings.

Stalock wasn't sharp in allowing four goals on 29 shots in Sunday's 4-0 loss to the New York Rangers.

"They were bad goals," coach Todd McLellan said. "I can't protect him, he knows that."

San Jose may be putting too much pressure on its goalies, who are facing 34.8 shots per game for the sixth-highest average in the NHL.

Rask was pulled after allowing five goals on 23 shots in last Thursday's 6-4 loss at Montreal in favor of Niklas Svedberg. The backup then made 32 saves for his first shutout in a 4-0 victory at Buffalo on Saturday.

"It's a great feeling," Svedberg said. "Most of all to get the win for us was huge. I was happy to get a shutout, too."

Four players scored for Boston (3-4-0), which totaled 10 goals during a 2-1-0 trip after scoring four in its first four games.

"You got to start somewhere," coach Claude Julien told the Bruins' official website. "I think we know that we've struggled out of the gate, as I mentioned earlier, but you feel that it's starting to come around. You can see it even in the body language of the players - they're starting to have more fun, and when you have more fun, you seem to have better legs and you seem to move the puck better."

One concern for Julien is that his team has been short-handed a league-high 29 times, though it killed off all seven Sabres power plays over the weekend. The Sharks had been 4 for 8 with the man advantage on the trip before coming up empty in three chances Sunday.

San Jose's Brent Burns saw his five-game point streak to start the season end Sunday. He is tied with Patrick Marleau for the team lead with seven points and ranks near the top of the league among defensemen.

Bruins defenseman Kevan Miller is out indefinitely after suffering a dislocated shoulder in a fight with Buffalo's Nicolas Deslauriers.
