KEY GAME INFORMATION
MILWAUKEE: GUARDS: The Bucks hope to fill a gaping hole at point guard with a committee approach. BRANDON KNIGHT, an undersized, athletically-overmatched combo guard, will get first crack at the job . . . Ex-Laker KENDALL MARSHALL, a heady floor general who can't shoot or defend, is an option as well . . . KHRIS MIDDLETON, a spot-up shooter, has a good chance to retain his starting job . . . New head coach Jason Kidd will try to rebuild O.J. MAYO, who could emerge as a serviceable sixth man, but looked wholly disinterested last season . . . The arrival of Marshall likely pushes NATE WOLTERS out of the rotation. He could be ticketed for the D-League at some point this season. FORWARDS: JABARI PARKER becomes the new face of this franchise. He can score as well as facilitate the offense. The only real question is what kind of defensive effort he puts in . . . GIANNIS ANTETOKOUNMPO will be used at both forward spots and both guard spots as well. The Greek Freak is raw, but the Bucks will expand his role . . . After a season in Larry Drew's doghouse, the coaching change should bode well for ERSAN ILYASOVA. He's likely looking at a part-time role . . . JOHN HENSON will play some 4 and 5, though his lack of an offensive game limits his appeal . . . JOHNNY O'BRYANT III might push for a rotation spot once he returns from a knee injury in late November. He's one of the few big men on this team who can score around the basket . . . If DAMIEN INGLIS comes over, he's looking at a D-League stint. CENTERS: Kidd is a LARRY SANDERS believer, so after a season filled with injuries and knucklehead behavior, he'll have every chance to bounce back. When he's in the right place, he's an elite rim protector . . . Larry Drew favorite ZAZA PACHULIA is looking at a traditional back-up role now that Drew is gone.
WASHINGTON: GUARDS: JOHN WALL has improved tremendously over the past two seasons. His physical skills are off the chart, and now he's significantly cut back on head-scratching mistakes . . . It appears that BRADLEY BEAL is becoming the perfect running mate for Wall in the short and the long term. He continues to develop off-the-dribble skills to go along with his shooting. His broken wrist is expected to fully heal by late November . . . ANDRE MILLER is in more of a mentor role in Washington. He's 38 and averaged less than 17 minutes per night last season . . . GLEN RICE JR. tore up Summer League, but it's unlikely the gunner will become an efficient scorer . . . GARRETT TEMPLE gives them a defense-first option off the bench, but his playing time will be minimal again. FORWARDS: PAUL PIERCE takes Trevor Ariza's spot at the 3. He'll have much more space to work in, not that he's ever needed it . . . The Wizards will likely play it safe with NENE HILARIO's minutes during the regular season again. They'll need him fresh for the playoffs, and they have enough frontcourt depth to do it . . . Back surgery is going to keep MARTELL WEBSTER out for a huge chunk of the season. He's a question mark even after he returns . . . After a lost rookie season, OTTO PORTER should be able to break into this rotation, especially with Webster out . . . KRIS HUMPHRIES will provide some rebounding and energy behind Nen' . . . It's incredible that DREW GOODEN is still employed. CENTERS: MARCIN GORTAT made beautiful pick-and-roll music with Wall last year. There's no reason that shouldn't continue. Gortat is a fringe All-Star . . . DeJUAN BLAIR can mix it up for 20 minutes per night, especially against smaller 5's.

*Bucks-Wizards Preview* =======================

By NOEY KUPCHAN STATS Writer

Milwaukee (0-1) at Washington (1-1), 7:00 p.m. EDT

John Wall and the Washington Wizards are set to open their home schedule after evening their record last time out.

The Milwaukee Bucks are also coming off a much-improved display.

Washington tries to avoid losing a fourth consecutive home opener when it faces the Bucks on Saturday night.

The Wizards kicked off their season with Wednesday's 107-95 loss at Miami, but they bounced back with a 105-98 victory at Orlando the following night. Wall led the way with 30 points and 12 assists after finishing with 16 and 11 against the Heat.

"I'm basically the head of the snake on the offensive and defensive end, so (against Miami) we didn't have the same kind of intensity," Wall said. "I knew we couldn't go into the season 0-2, so I'm going to come out with more energy and play better on the defensive end."

Marcin Gortat had 20 points and 12 rebounds while Paul Pierce scored 16, including two key buckets down the stretch.

"That's what I'm capable of giving this team - another guy you can go to in crucial situations," Pierce said. "As each game goes along, each practice, and as we continue to build our chemistry, we have to find ways to win. We are still getting to know each other and these types of games we have to grind out."

Pierce will see a familiar face across the way in former Brooklyn coach Jason Kidd, who was acquired by Milwaukee in exchange for two second-round picks this offseason.

While Kidd watched his team blow a 24-point lead in the second half of Wednesday's season-opening 108-106 overtime loss at Charlotte, the Bucks regrouped Friday with a 93-81 win over Philadelphia. O.J. Mayo scored a game-high 25 points off the bench while rookie Jabari Parker finished with 11 and 10 rebounds.

Milwaukee trailed by one heading into the fourth quarter before holding the 76ers to seven points. The Bucks pulled away with an 11-0 run over the final eight minutes.

"Being a young team and playing through it and finding a way to grind a win out - that's what good teams have to do in this league, so we're going in the right direction," Kidd said.

Larry Sanders had 15 rebounds for Milwaukee, which held a 55-42 edge on the glass and limited Philadelphia to 37.2 percent shooting.

"It's trusting one another out there and doing everything with energy and effort," Mayo said. "Energy and effort will help us out a lot."

The Bucks couldn't come to terms with Brandon Knight, who is in the fourth and final year of his rookie contract. Knight, averaging 17.5 points while shooting 28.0 percent in the first two games, is set to become a restricted free agent at season's end.

"It's not a negative. It can only be a positive," Kidd said. "I think that's the positive for him to grow as a player."

Knight is averaging 21.0 points during a four-game stretch against Washington, which has averaged 105.2 in taking five of six in the series.

The Wizards have dropped their last three home openers by an average of 5.3 points, including a surprising 109-102 defeat to Philadelphia last Nov. 1.

The Bucks have gone 5-37 on the road since the start of last season for the NBA's second-worst mark.
