|
| | | MEMPHIS: GUARDS: So much for head coach David Joerger picking up the tempo. MIKE CONLEY has become a much better half-court player, a requirement on this team . . . COURTNEY LEE will likely be the offensive side of their 2-guard platoon, as he was late last season . . . He lost some minutes late last season, but there's still a part-time role for TONY ALLEN . . . VINCE CARTER will take over Mike Miller's old role, a floor spacer at both wing spots . . . The Grizzlies blocked NICK CALATHES' move back to Europe to keep him around for point guard depth. He is suspended for the first 13 games of the season . . . JORDAN ADAMS comes from UCLA with a strong statistical profile. He might not break into the rotation as a rookie, though . . . BENO UDRIH bought himself another season with strong postseason play. FORWARDS: ZACH RANDOLPH remains the go-to scorer in Memphis. And he's playing for what might be his last big NBA payday . . . TAYSHAUN PRINCE has faded fast, and his expiring contract might be his greatest asset right now . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER returns after missing most of last season with a stress fracture in his foot. He'll have to battle his way back into the rotation after the acquisition of Vince Carter . . . Second-rounder JARNELL STOKES has a football player's build and is quick around the basket, but he could be looking at a season spent mostly in the D-League . . . JON LEUER is still doing Jon Leuer things, shooting well from long range and grabbing occasional rebounds. CENTERS: MARC GASOL will earn a max contract if he keeps playing at this level. Along with very good defense, he's become a valuable facilitator for this team on the offensive end of the court . . . KOSTA KOUFOS is one of the league's better back-up centers. He fits well in the Grizzlies' slow-tempo system. | | SAN ANTONIO: GUARDS: TONY PARKER may not be ageless, as he'll sit a handful of games during the regular season. But when the 32-year-old is on the court, he still gets into the lane whenever he wants . . . He can't do anything off the dribble, but DANNY GREEN is one of the league's elite spot-up shooters . . . MANU GINOBILI will need some regular-season maintenance as far as playing time goes, especially coming off a stress fracture in his leg. He's essential for the postseason . . . MARCO BELINELLI will have a significant role off the bench due to his ability to defend, shoot and do some ball-handling . . . It might be a lost regular season for NBA Finals star PATTY MILLS as he works his way back from shoulder surgery. He hopes to make his season debut in mid-January . . . CORY JOSEPH will pick up a few more minutes while Mills is out. FORWARDS: There's plenty of buzz surrounding KAWHI LEONARD after his Finals MVP performance, though it seems unlikely they'll make him the centerpiece of this offense as long as their vets are still going strong . . . Thirty-eight-year-old TIM DUNCAN is still one of the better power forwards in the league. Just like Parker and Ginobili, he'll take the occasional DNP-CD. His rebounding and shot-blocking rates continue to surge. The only real disappointment last season was that his FT shooting slid back towards his sub-70% career mark . . . JEFF AYRES is one of the new anonymous big men at the end of the San Antonio bench. He'll see a handful of starts when Gregg Popovich rests his star players . . . KYLE ANDERSON is too much of a defensive liability to see major minutes as a rookie, but his versatile skill set suggests he could be Boris Diaw's heir apparent . . . MATT BONNER will hoist some threes during the regular season. CENTERS: Popovich rotates his centers depending on the situation. TIAGO SPLITTER, the more traditional 5, will likely take the bulk of the minutes again . . . BORIS DIAW will play when the offense gets stagnant, especially when opponents go small. |

*Grizzlies-Spurs Preview* =========================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer
Memphis (19-4) at San Antonio (17-8), 8:30 p.m. EDT
The San Antonio Spurs were running at full strength when they knocked off the Memphis Grizzlies 12 days ago in the midst of yet another hot stretch.
Things have changed plenty since, with injuries taking their toll on the Spurs and the Grizzlies strengthening their case as a legitimate championship contender.
Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard will sit out Wednesday night as the host Spurs seek a 10th straight victory over the surging Grizzlies.
Parker scored 14 points in a 107-101 win at Memphis on Dec. 5, but a strained left hamstring kept him out of five of the next six games. The Spurs (17-8) have gone 2-3 over the last five and fell 108-95 at Portland on Monday with Tim Duncan (rest) and Manu Ginobili (lower back) also sitting out.
Leonard scored a team-high 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds, but he suffered a left hand injury late. X-rays came back negative, but the soreness will keep him out of this contest.
"We don't want to feel sorry for ourselves because we're short-handed or whatever," said rookie Kyle Anderson, who came off the bench and scored a season-best 15 points. "We're going out there to try to win the game, compete, and do the things we normally do. If we fall short we could all look in the mirror and say we competed."
The Grizzlies (20-4) can look in their proverbial mirror and see nearly the rest of the NBA. Golden State is just one game better, but Memphis ended the Warriors' 16-game winning streak with a 105-98 win Tuesday.
A 20-0 run to start the second quarter gave the Grizzlies the lead for good as Marc Gasol finished with a game-high 24 points. Mike Conley and Zach Randolph added 17 apiece for the Grizzlies, who have won five straight since falling to the Spurs.
The run was mainly fueled by the reserves, as Vince Carter came off the bench to score a season-high 16 points.
"They came in, and I thought defensively they did an amazing job playing from one side of the floor helping the other side," Gasol said. "Young guy Vince made some tough shots."
Coach Dave Joerger also lauded Memphis' defense, which allows 95.6 points per game to rank fourth in the league. Right in front of the Grizzlies are the Spurs, who allow 95.4.
"It was a great win," Joerger said. "I'm proud of the guys, especially on this stage."
Gasol scored 28 and grabbed 12 boards, Conley had 23 and 10 assists and Tayshaun Prince scored 20 off the bench in the last meeting with San Antonio.
Memphis has lost the last nine matchups, including being swept in the 2013 Western Conference finals. Although Leonard and Parker will be out for this contest, the defending champions still have plenty of options.
"It's a team that we want to beat really badly," Gasol said. "It's a team that has beaten us a couple of times. We want to go there and beat them. It's not easy."
Danny Green had 16 points in the last meeting and Duncan, who had a triple-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, should be back in the lineup. It's unclear if Ginobili, who hit all five of his 3-point attempts, will be able to play.
Conley could benefit most from not having to deal with Parker. He's averaged 24.8 points and shot 57.1 percent from 3-point range in his last four against the Spurs.
The Grizzlies also may be short-handed after Tony Allen suffered a corneal abrasion Tuesday when he was poked in the eye. He said he will travel with the team and try to play through the injury.
