|
| | | PORTLAND: GUARDS: DAMIAN LILLARD might be the most complete offensive point guard in the NBA. He's a legitimately great shooter, and quick enough off the dribble to get wherever he wants inside the paint . . . WESLEY MATTHEWS runs, runs and runs off the ball as a spot-up shooter . . . STEVE BLAKE is most likely to absorb Mo Williams' old sixth-man role. He can take some ball-handling duties, but at this point his value is as a spot-up shooter . . . He had his rookie season erased by injuries, and it's a crowded rotation, but C.J. McCOLLUM might be able to shoot his way into significant minutes . . . WILL BARTON is a practice player unless he develops a three-point shot . . . ALLEN CRABBE will likely bounce between Portland and the D-League again. FORWARDS: LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE's combination of length and mid-range shooting makes him virtually unguardable when he's on . . . NICOLAS BATUM often runs the offense with Lillard working off the ball. Batum can shoot, too. There's no real weakness in his game . . . He tore a thumb ligament during Summer League play, but THOMAS ROBINSON is already back on the court. He's a hustle guy off the bench, but has a limited offensive game and can't defend bigger 4's . . . DORELL WRIGHT will likely bounce in and out of the rotation again due to his streaky shooting . . . JOEL FREELAND's skill set is limited, but he can play the 4 and the 5 . . . VICTOR CLAVER will try to work his way back into the rotation as a defensive specialist. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ proved a perfect complement to Aldridge, and should handle the bulk of the minutes at center again . . . CHRIS KAMAN gives Portland s a more offensive-minded option off the bench . . . It will be another developmental season for MEYERS LEONARD | | OKLAHOMA CITY: GUARDS: Everything should be a full go with RUSSELL WESTBROOK. His attacking style of play will always carry some injury risk, but he hasn't lost any explosiveness to this point . . . REGGIE JACKSON wants to start, but it's a question of whether the Thunder can survive defensively with him and Westbrook in a small backcourt. Jackson is certainly their second-best offensive guard . . . ANTHONY MORROW can flat-out shoot. He can't do anything else, but that floor spacing might be enough to get him 20 minutes per night . . . If the light doesn't turn on, JEREMY LAMB will be on the outside of this rotation. FORWARDS: Once he returns from his foot injury in late November, it should be the same old story for KEVIN DURANT, the reigning NBA MVP . . . He still struggles defensively in space, but SERGE IBAKA will be right there among the league leaders in blocks again. Throw in a reliable mid-range game, and more offensive responsibility with Durant out, and he's a fringe All-Star . . . NICK COLLISON takes charges, but doesn't do much else . . . Rookie MITCH McGARY could be pushing Collison for minutes by midseason . . . ANDRE ROBERSON could get another handful of starts as a defensive presence on the wing, but he rarely plays 20-plus minutes . . . PERRY JONES is on the fringe of this roster. CENTERS: Is this it? Could this be the season that the Thunder finally stop playing KENDRICK PERKINS? . . . STEVEN ADAMS came on strong late last season and is probably already better than Perk. He can defend and moves the ball offensively. |

*Trail Blazers-Thunder Preview* ===============================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
Portland (22-6) at Oklahoma City (13-15), 8:00 p.m. EDT
The Oklahoma City Thunder struggle greatly without Kevin Durant, and that was certainly the case in their season opener against the Portland Trail Blazers.
The Thunder may be without Durant again Tuesday night as they try to continue their home success against the Trail Blazers, who could be without LaMarcus Aldridge.
A broken right foot and a sprained ankle have left Oklahoma City (13-15) without Durant for 19 games this season, and the team has dropped 13 of them. That includes a 106-89 loss at Portland (22-7) on Oct. 29 in which the Thunder also were missing Reggie Jackson, Jeremy Lamb and Anthony Morrow.
They shot just 40.7 percent in that meeting, connecting on 2 of 16 from beyond the arc. They were particularly poor in the fourth quarter, getting outscored 31-12 while making 5 of 19 shots and missing all five from long range.
Oklahoma City averages just 92.1 points without the reigning MVP compared to 106.2 with him.
It's unclear if Durant will miss a third straight game with his ankle injury, and the Thunder have split the last two after falling 101-99 to New Orleans on Sunday. They failed to score in the final 3:46, and Russell Westbrook missed a 3 in the final seconds.
The All-Star guard finished with 29 points, but only five came in the final quarter as he went 2 for 9 from the floor with no assists and two turnovers. He was 8 for 18 with eight assists and four turnovers before that.
That was reminiscent of Westbrook's performance against the Trail Blazers two months ago. He scored what's still his season high of 38 points, but shot 1 of 6 and had two points and no assists in the fourth quarter.
Westbrook has just 10 fourth-quarter assists this season, and he's shooting 36.2 percent. He's connecting on 48.9 percent of his field goals in the first 36 minutes.
"I'm not going to keep answering questions about me not passing now when we lose," Westbrook said. "When we won eight (actually seven) in a row, nobody said nothing about not passing, so I don't want to hear it now.
"My job is to attack when the fourth quarter comes. My job is to stay in attack mode and try to score and try to make plays happen. If I miss, I miss. I'm going to live and die by that every time, every night, regardless of what happens."
Westbrook is averaging 27.8 points over his last six home meetings with Portland, but injuries sidelined him for the last two.
Durant, meanwhile, totaled 83 points in those matchups, pouring in 46 in a 105-97 victory Jan. 21 as Oklahoma City won for the sixth time in eight home meetings.
While the Thunder await word on Durant's status, the Trail Blazers are in the same situation with Aldridge. An upper-respiratory illness forced the forward to miss Monday's 110-95 loss at Houston, which ended Portland's winning streak at five.
"They outplayed us," guard Damian Lillard said. "They played a better game than we did."
Aldridge has averaged 26.5 points and 13.3 rebounds in his last six games, and he scored 27 in the first meeting with the Thunder. The catalyst to the comeback in that one was Wesley Matthews, who hit three 3-pointers in the fourth and finished with 22 points.
Lillard had a season-low 10 points in that contest. He's averaging 14.9 points and shooting just 34.8 percent in nine career games against Oklahoma City, both his lowest against any Western Conference opponent.
