|
| | | TORONTO: GUARDS: DeMAR DeROZAN has evolved from raw athlete into dangerous scorer. He gets to the line frequently enough that he's virtually guaranteed a 20-PPG average . . . There's some long-term worry with KYLE LOWRY. His stocky body type leaves little room for error on those contested threes he hits, and there's some question of motivation now that he's been paid. But he was so good last season, that the chances of a fall-off seem low . . . Along with being the primary back-up at point guard, GREIVIS VASQUEZ will play alongside Lowry at times to take ball-handling pressure off of him . . . LOUIS WILLIAMS should be closer to 100 percent in his second season off ACL surgery, though he's looking at a fourth guard role in Toronto. FORWARDS: AMIR JOHNSON will lead the rotation at the 4, providing rim protection, rebounding and hustle baskets . . . He's streaky, but uber dunker TERRENCE ROSS is reinventing himself as a three-point shooter . . . Stretch 4 PATRICK PATTERSON has added a corner three to supplement a below-the-rim game . . . TYLER HANSBROUGH's spastic style is a thing of beauty . . . JAMES JOHNSON returns to Toronto. He's more versatile than his doughy frame would suggest . . . Undersized big CHUCK HAYES will throw his weight around for 15 minutes a night . . . Draft night stunner BRUNO CABOCLO is likely headed for the D-League . . . Ditto DeANDRE DANIELS . . . Not too long ago multiple teams fought over LANDRY FIELDS, but those days are long gone. CENTERS: JONAS VALANCIUNAS still has to add some nuance to his game (such as making physical contact with a defender when he sets a screen) if he's going to get full-time minutes. But the big upside is still there . . . LUCAS NOGUEIRA, a 2013 first-rounder picked up from Atlanta, gives them a rim protector . . . GREG STIEMSMA was added in early September to provide depth at the center position. | | MINNESOTA: GUARDS: RICKY RUBIO is a fine ball-handler and creative passer, but it would be nice if he knocked down some shots . . . The Wolves are still trying to move KEVIN MARTIN's contract. He has devolved into more of a spot-up shooter . . . ANDREW WIGGINS should immediately contribute for this team. He'll be an elite defender, sooner rather than later, and should be able to produce points as well . . . Shoot-first combo guard MO WILLIAMS will head up the second unit . . . J.J. BAREA is also likely to be moved. He can still do the Mighty Mouse, sixth-man thing . . . On paper, CHASE BUDINGER is a great fit alongside Rubio due to his shooting and movement off the ball. He has to stay healthy though . . . Head coach Flip Saunders is high on ZACH LaVINE, a pure athlete who didn't do much of anything as a freshman at UCLA. FORWARDS: THADDEUS YOUNG is now the best player in this Timberwolves frontcourt. He'll lead the team in scoring and eats up rebounds as well . . . ANTHONY BENNETT should play some significant minutes with this team. He's a good scorer and will try to prove that he was just not ready to come into a bad situation last season . . . COREY BREWER has established himself as a solid defender on the wing who can knock down some threes and run the floor well . . . GLENN ROBINSON III should earn immediate minutes due to his defense . . . SHABAZZ MUHAMMAD gets new life with a new coaching regime coming in. He could be a crafty second-unit scorer . . . RONNY TURIAF is a big body who can protect the rim. CENTERS: NIKOLA PEKOVIC is a big part of this offense without needing plays designed for him. He's arguably the top offensive rebounder in the NBA . . . GORGUI DIENG impressed late last season and should be ready for a bigger role. He and Pekovic might be in a timeshare by the season's second half. |

*Raptors-Timberwolves Preview* ==============================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Toronto (44-30) at Minnesota (16-58), 8:00 p.m. EDT
In pursuit of one of the top seeds in the Eastern Conference, the Toronto Raptors would seem to catch a break with no teams above .500 remaining on their schedule.
The Raptors, though, will also have to play most of those games on the road, where they've struggled mightily.
Toronto goes for a rare road victory Wednesday night by continuing its dominance over the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Raptors (44-30) moved one game behind Chicago for third in the East and three ahead of fifth-place Washington with Monday's 99-96 win over Houston. DeMar DeRozan led the way with a career-high 42 points and matched a personal best with 11 rebounds after scoring six in a 94-83 victory against the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday.
The Raptors also held back-to-back opponents to less than 100 points for the first time since their first two back from the All-Star break. They gave up an average of 106.1 points over the final 10 games of a 5-13 stretch that ended last Wednesday.
"Our whole theme from here on out is going to be defense," coach Dwane Casey said. "We're going to score enough points. We'll find a way to score. ... We've got to make sure we continue to improve defensively.
"The defense we play is the most important thing because that's going to get us ready for the stretch run and the playoffs."
The Raptors next face the league's worst defensive team as they try for just a third win in 12 road games. Toronto plays six of its final eight contests away from home.
Despite their struggles on the road, the Raptors have won eight of nine in Minnesota. They've won seven straight overall in the series and are 19-1 against the Timberwolves since 2004-05.
Minnesota (16-58) was banged-up in a 105-100 loss at Toronto on March 18, and could be short-handed again. Kevin Martin, who matched a season high with 37 points in the first matchup, has missed the past five games with a strained left hamstring and is questionable.
Kevin Garnett (knee, illness), Gorgui Dieng (concussion) and Gary Neal (ankle) are doubtful. Ricky Rubio (ankle) is questionable while Shabazz Muhammad (finger) and Nikola Pekovic (ankle) are expected to sit out the rest of the season.
Coach Flip Saunders thought his team's fatigue showed in its fourth straight loss, 104-84 to Utah on Monday.
"Those guys in there, they're exhausted," said coach Flip Saunders, whose team is giving up 106.0 points per game. "I'm not using that as an excuse, it's just the reality of the situation."
The Raptors are not expected to have Kyle Lowry available for a fourth consecutive game and sixth time in seventh contests because of back spasms. Lowry, injured on a hard fall in the third quarter in the first meeting, had scored a combined 44 points in his prior two games against the Timberwolves and had a triple-double in Minnesota last March.
DeRozan has scored 25 points in each of his last two games there while making 20 of 40 shots.
