|
| | | ATLANTA: GUARDS: GM Danny Ferry has really talked up JEFF TEAGUE, who will be more of a traditional point guard with Joe Johnson gone . . . DEVIN HARRIS is going to play plenty of minutes, both alongside Teague and off the bench . . . LOU WILLIAMS is a sixth man. He lacks the mentality to run the point and the size to guard opposing twos. His role will be similar to what it was in Philly . . . KYLE KORVER and ANTHONY MORROW are pure shooters who do little else. They can play the three in a pinch, and the hot hand will get the minutes . . . Coach Larry Drew could call on DeSHAWN STEVENSON for the occasional defense-heavy lineup. More likely, he'll rack up the DNP-CDs . . . JOHN JENKINS might be the best shooter in the rookie class, but he'll be buried on the depth chart. FORWARDS: JOSH SMITH rescinded his trade demand, perhaps because he'll now be the focal point of the offense. He was more aggressive on both ends of the floor last year. As long as he resists the urge to float on the perimeter, he should emerge as an All-Star . . . Considering the makeup of this roster, Atlanta will utilize a lot of three-guard lineups. Korver and Morrow can stretch a defense from that third guard/small forward spot, with Stevenson stepping in as an agitator . . . After scoring double-figures six times in April, IVAN JOHNSON was re-signed to once again provide some muscle inside . . . Rookie MIKE SCOTT is polished after five years at Virginia, but doesn't have the athleticism to be an impact player . . . ANTHONY TOLLIVER is a defensive specialist with very little offense to contribute. CENTERS: AL HORFORD will get his wish to play more power forward this season, though he'll remain their primary option at center. He's healthy again and is one of the most consistent bigs in the NBA . . . ZAZA PACHULIA filled in admirably for Horford last year. But it's back to bench duty for the bruising big . . . JOHAN PETRO is French for "12th man." | | MEMPHIS: GUARDS: The Grizzlies will scale back MIKE CONLEY's minutes a bit. He's a quality starting point guard, but seemed to lose some pep as last season wore on . . . TONY ALLEN figures to see more playing time now that O.J. Mayo is gone. He's an outstanding defender who will be the fifth option on offense . . . JERRYD BAYLESS figures to become the new sixth man and Allen platoon partner. He'll also spell Conley at the point, leading to solid minutes for the combo guard . . . Second-year man JOSH SELBY has a chance for a rotation spot after starring in the Summer League. He has big offensive upside . . . WAYNE ELLINGTON seems like an emergency plan for the second unit . . . This is likely a redshirt year for talented, but erratic, rookie TONY WROTEN. FORWARDS: RUDY GAY is going to lead the Grizzlies in touches and shots. He's not shy about looking for iso situations . . . ZACH RANDOLPH had trouble getting back into the flow after his knee injury. It's always been a fragile balance with Z-Bo, and he could be an odd man out going forward . . . MARREESE SPEIGHTS should be the offensive focal point of the bench unit as their sixth man . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER is a versatile defensive piece who will see solid minutes off the bench. He's a non-factor offensively, though . . . DARRELL ARTHUR suffered a non-displaced fractured in his leg in late September, and will not likely be ready when the season begins. A rising young big, his role will depend on when his athleticism comes back. CENTERS: The Grizzlies are at their best when MARC GASOL is getting touches and shots on the offensive end. Whether or not Gay and Randolph are willing to share is a concern, but Gasol has to be aggressive when the ball is in his hands . . . HAMED HADDADI will continue to play limited minutes off the bench. |

*Hawks-Grizzlies Preview* =========================
By SANTOSH VENKATARAMAN STATS Senior Writer
Atlanta (10-5) at Memphis (13-3), 8:00 p.m. EDT
The Memphis Grizzlies' 13-game win streak over Eastern Conference foes could be put to the test Saturday night.
The Grizzlies will be back home against a surging Atlanta Hawks team that has won eight of nine.
Memphis (14-3) has been nearly unbeatable at home, going 9-1. The Grizzlies last lost to an East team on March 16, a 114-110 overtime defeat to Toronto.
The Hawks (11-5), meanwhile, have had six different players lead them or tie for the team lead in scoring during this 8-1 run. Atlanta has also won nine of its 11 meetings with Memphis, although the Grizzlies won the lone contest last season 96-77 on Feb. 2.
Both teams are known for defense.
Memphis leads the West in limiting opponents to 91.1 points per game and its 43.4 defensive field-goal percentage is one of the league's best marks.
Atlanta is also among the NBA's best teams in those departments, allowing 94.3 points per game and 43.4 percent shooting. The Hawks are the league's only team to not allow an opponent to shoot 50 percent in a game.
Both teams won hard-fought contests Friday night.
Rudy Gay tied a season high with 28 points and Quincy Pondexter matched his season best with 16 in a 96-89 victory at New Orleans. The Grizzlies led by as many as 14 points and held on when the margin got as close as one in the fourth quarter.
"We just toughed it out," Gay said. "This is one of those games that a young team probably wouldn't win, but the fact that we've been around and know how it is, the fact that this is the NBA and everybody has a chance to win, that's what got us over the hump."
Josh Smith had 23 points and 15 rebounds and Al Horford also posted a double-double as the Hawks beat Washington 104-95 at home. Atlanta led by as many as 18 points before its advantage was cut to two in the final period.
"I think when we got the big lead we got a little complacent," coach Larry Drew said. "We have to develop a killer instinct. Tonight, we didn't have it. We didn't do it."
Horford had 14 points and 14 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double. He's averaging 17.8 points and 12.0 rebounds in that span.
For Memphis, Pondexter hit all six of his shots Friday, including four 3-pointers, for his second straight 16-point performance.
"It wasn't I was extra assertive or anything tonight," Pondexter said. "I was just making the right basketball plays."
Gay reached 20 points for the first time in six games Friday.
"He's a good player, we needed him to play his game and that's all we ask," coach Lionel Hollins said. "He's been playing well, but tonight he made his shots and that's exactly what we needed."
A matchup to watch Saturday will be at point guard between Indianapolis natives Jeff Teague for Atlanta and Mike Conley for Memphis.
Teague scored 19 points Friday while Conley's 2.7 steals per game rank him among the league's best.
Hawks guard Kyle Korver will miss his fourth straight game Saturday due to back problems.
