|
| | | PORTLAND: GUARDS: Portland will turn point guard duties over to rookie DAMIAN LILLARD. The leap from Big Sky Conference to NBA will be a big one, but Lillard is an efficient scorer who can manage the offense . . . WESLEY MATTHEWS is more of a glue guy. He can't create his own offense, but he can heat up as a streaky catch-and-shoot guy . . . RONNIE PRICE should emerge as Lillard's top backup, a role he's filled at numerous stops . . . Second-rounder WILL BARTON could emerge as a rotation player. He's a versatile wing who must prove he can play off the ball . . . SASHA PAVLOVIC will play both the two and three, and can still stroke it from long distance . . . NOLAN SMITH, a misstep of the last regime, is a fringe roster player . . . ELLIOT WILLIAMS, a defensive-minded combo guard, tore his Achilles in mid-September and expects to miss the entire season. FORWARDS: LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE had a couple of health scares over the past six months, but he should enter the season 100 percent. He's clearly Portland's best player . . . NICOLAS BATUM felt rightly disrespected by his secondary role in Portland. All signs point to a bigger role in 2012-13 . . . VICTOR CLAVER is an athletic scrapper who won't do much offensively even if he does get big minutes . . . JOEL FREELAND could become their first big man off the bench . . . JARED JEFFRIES is still relevant as a defensive specialist . . . The highlight of LUKE BABBITT's career might be that mention on Onion:Sportsdome. CENTERS: J.J. HICKSON is a black hole on offense and a liability on defense, but he can score and rebound, which is good enough to be the starting center in Portland's weak frontcourt . . . MEYERS LEONARD might not be quite ready for 30-plus minutes, but he'll have to learn on the fly due to Portland's lack of veteran bigs. He has some long-term upside as a 7-footer with some nice athleticism and touch inside 10 feet. | | LA CLIPPERS: GUARDS: CHRIS PAUL was every bit an MVP-caliber player in his first year in L.A. They should monitor his minutes late in the regular season to keep him fresh for the playoffs. . . His Achilles is on schedule to be healed by December, and CHAUNCEY BILLUPS will start once he's healthy. He's likely to lose athleticism, and his leash could be short if he shoots as poorly as he did last year . . . JAMAL CRAWFORD steps in to lead the second unit. We'll see how quickly his inefficient, shoot-first ways grow stale . . . ERIC BLEDSOE was a stud in the playoffs. He can't play extended minutes alongside Paul, but coach Vinny Del Negro knows he has to get Bledsoe on the floor . . . WILLIE GREEN provides capable depth, but he's on the outside looking in at the rotation. FORWARDS: BLAKE GRIFFIN's knee injury likely isn't serious enough to linger into the season. He's starting to develop some post moves to go along with his dunks . . . CARON BUTLER played hurt for most of last year, but still did enough to nail down a starting job for this season . . . LAMAR ODOM moped his way back to L.A. Don't be surprised if he has a strong bounce-back year, especially considering he'll be the Clippers' best defensive big . . . GRANT HILL could see some starts, but more likely the 40-year-old is pegged for limited minutes . . . MATT BARNES will replace Hill once he injures himself again . . . RONNY TURIAF will provide some of the toughness they lost when Reggie Evans left . . . TREY THOMPKINS will continue to languish on the bench, especially after sitting out the preseason with a knee injury. CENTERS: He can block shots and rebound, but at this point DeANDRE JORDAN is just too much of a defensive liability in space to play 30-plus minutes. That's why the Clippers will often pair Lamar Odom with Blake Griffin in the frontcourt . . . RYAN HOLLINS can also defend the basket and has six fouls to give. |

*Trail Blazers-Clippers Preview* ================================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Portland (22-21) at Los Angeles (32-13), 9:30 p.m. EDT
The Los Angeles Clippers didn't have too much trouble during Chris Paul's initial absence with a bruised right kneecap. It's been a different story this week.
It's unknown when the All-Star point guard will return, and the Clippers will try to avoid a season-high fifth straight loss Sunday night as they finish a home-and-home set with the Portland Trail Blazers.
Los Angeles (32-13) swept a three-game road trip earlier this month despite Paul's absence, but the club hasn't won since he aggravated his injury in a loss at Golden State on Monday.
The Clippers managed to erase a 14-point deficit Saturday in Portland, but then they blew a nine-point lead in the final 2:30 of a 101-100 defeat.
"Tough pill to swallow," coach Vinny Del Negro said. "We had an opportunity to steal this one and we couldn't convert down the stretch."
Los Angeles missed its final five shots, including two from former Blazers guard Jamal Crawford in the final 17 seconds. His last attempt, a 19-foot jumper, came with 0.9 seconds left.
"I'll take that shot 10 out of 10 and I'll make it nine out of 10," Crawford said.
Crawford finished with 19 points and has averaged 19.5 during his team's losing streak. Blake Griffin had 24 points, a career high-tying 10 assists and eight rebounds despite dealing with a sore left ankle.
Portland's Nicolas Batum, meanwhile, recorded his second triple-double in three games Saturday with 20 points, a career-best 12 assists and 10 rebounds. Rookie point guard Damian Lillard also scored 20 points.
Their efforts helped the Blazers (22-21) snap a three-game skid in the series and record a second consecutive win following a six-game losing streak.
"It's a better taste when you win the game," said Batum, who had his other triple-double in a loss to Washington on Monday. "I can't promise a triple-double every week, but I try to do something and help the team to win every game."
Batum had a team-best 23 points against the Clippers on Nov. 8, but Crawford, Paul and DeAndre Jordan each topped 20 in Los Angeles' 103-90 win. Griffin was held to seven points in that game, but he was one of three Clippers players with 20 in the most recent home matchup with Portland, a 98-97 victory March 30.
Paul also had 20, including the go-ahead layup with five seconds left. His absence would figure to make it much tougher for Los Angeles to avoid losing five in a row for the first time since Feb. 22-28, 2011.
The Clippers are also in danger of their first back-to-back home defeats since Nov. 3 and 5.
They'll want to be wary of J.J. Hickson, who has totaled 57 points on 25-of-37 shooting (67.6 percent) in his last two road games against the Clippers. Blazers scoring leader and All-Star forward LaMarcus Aldridge, meanwhile, has just 26 points on 38.7 percent shooting (12 of 31) in the two matchups this season.
Griffin has double-doubles in eight of his nine career games against Portland.
