| | | CLEVELAND: GUARDS: There are some durability concerns, but KYRIE IRVING is on the verge of stardom. He should benefit from the arrival of Anthony Bennett, the kind of pick-and-roll weapon Cleveland has lacked . . . DION WAITERS is still a work-in-progress defensively, and this will likely be another developmental year. He might end up settling in as the leader of the second unit . . . JARRETT JACK seems likely to close out games, even if he doesn't technically start. He's a creative shot-maker who will play close to starter's minutes . . . C.J. MILES is more of a situational three-point threat. SERGEY KARASEV, a polished Euro import, could push him for that role . . . CARRICK FELIX doesn't figure to crack this rotation. FORWARDS: No. 1 overall pick ANTHONY BENNETT will see time at both forward spots, and he'll be a pick-and-pop weapon no matter where he's playing. The question is whether he'll defend well enough to stay on the court for 30 minutes . . . There should also be enough minutes for TRISTAN THOMPSON, who hasn't quite put it together. The 22-year-old has upside though, and is a bigger part of Cleveland's future than Anderson Varejao . . . EARL CLARK gives the Cavs a quality second unit player who can play extended minutes if Bennett is overmatched defensively . . . A starter last year, ALONZO GEE figures to be a second-unit glue guy, but might be looking at a lot of DNP-CDs. CENTERS: ANDERSON VAREJAO is once again healthy and once again trade bait. No matter what the starting lineup looks like, he'll play major minutes at the four and five . . . The Cavs are taking a flier on ANDREW BYNUM. With his knee problems, it'd be surprising if he could give them 20-plus good minutes per night . . . TYLER ZELLER is likely the odd man out until Varejao is dealt or Bynum gets injured. | | HOUSTON: GUARDS: JAMES HARDEN is a franchise player, and as one of the league's elite pick-and-roll threats, he and Dwight Howard have the potential to be dominant . . . Trade rumors will continue to circle JEREMY LIN, who isn't an off-the-ball threat to fit alongside Harden. He is, however, clearly a starting-caliber point guard . . . PATRICK BEVERLEY really shined in back-up minutes last year, and he's part of the reason that Lin is expendable. He's strong defensively, and he proved capable of running the second unit. He'll be one of the league's top back-up PGs if Lin stays . . . Rookie combo guard ISAIAH CANAAN will be developed as a spot-up shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a roster filler . . . AARON BROOKS is around as a reclamation project . . . RONNIE BREWER provides a much-needed athletic perimeter defender. FORWARDS: CHANDLER PARSONS is an elite role player. He entered the league with the reputation as a pure athlete, but it's his ability to knock down the corner three that's made him so valuable in Houston . . . GREG SMITH looks like another great find for the Rockets. He's an athletic banger who can allow Dwight Howard to roam a bit on defense . . . DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS showed flashes as a rookie, but the stretch four looks like a situational role player for the foreseeable future . . . FRANCISCO GARCIA will lend a veteran presence to the second unit . . . Versatile TERRENCE JONES could be in for more minutes as the Rockets look for the right role players . . . OMRI CASSPI might be getting his last chance at the NBA. CENTERS: DWIGHT HOWARD should be much happier in Houston, though the Rockets still have to convince him that he can dominate as a pick-and-roll player. He should make everyone forget about his season with the Lakers . . . The fact is OMER ASIK just doesn't fit alongside Howard. But if he stays somewhat happy in Houston, he could be a valuable second-unit player . . . MARCUS CAMBY has latched on to chase a ring. |

*Cavaliers-Rockets Preview* ===========================
Cleveland (16-30) at Houston (31-17), 8:00 p.m. EDT
The Houston Rockets are brimming with confidence after two impressive wins without top scorer James Harden.
If Harden doesn't return Saturday night, the featured matchup figures to be Jeremy Lin going up against Kyrie Irving.
Lin and the Rockets will be looking to improve to 10-0 at home against Eastern Conference foes as they meet Irving's Cavaliers.
Houston (31-17) won 97-90 at home over San Antonio on Tuesday and 117-115 at Dallas the next night. The victories followed back-to-back losses to Memphis and came without Harden, out with an injured left thumb.
"Yes, these wins are huge for us," forward Chandler Parsons said. "Those were two big games for us, especially after losing two to Memphis, it was important for us to get these two."
Harden averages 23.7 points. Lin took his place in the starting lineup and turned in back-to-back 18-point efforts while totaling 15 assists.
"I just tried to be aggressive all the time," Lin said. "Sometimes it's there, sometimes it's not. It's my job and my role to push pace and initiate."
That's the same style of play favored by Irving, who will try to help Cleveland (16-30) end a six-game slide in Houston in his first NBA game in the city. Irving has averaged 23.7 points during the Cavaliers' three-game slide, and on Thursday put to rest rumors that he wants out of town.
"I'm still in my rookie contract and I'm happy to be here and I'm pretty sure that I'm going to be here for a long time," Irving said. "I'm not saying anything to foretell the future, but I'm pretty sure the relationship I have with (owner) Dan Gilbert and management extends off the court and I enjoy being here."
Lin had 20 points and Irving scored 30 but had eight turnovers the last time these teams met, a 112-104 Houston road victory Jan. 5, 2013. Irving did not play in the Rockets' 116-78 rout March 22.
The only other time these guards faced off was Feb. 29, 2012. Lin had 19 points and 13 assists in New York's 120-103 win over Cleveland, with Irving finishing with 22 and seven.
The Cavaliers will be tasked with slowing down the hard-working Parsons, who travels an average of 2.8 miles per game to lead the NBA entering play Friday. Parsons, who scored 26 against the Mavericks, is among the league leaders in minutes with 38.3 a contest and has exceeded 42 four times in the past nine games.
Anderson Varejao has missed the last two games with a knee injury and his absence would likely hurt against Dwight Howard, who has averaged 20.7 points and 16.8 rebounds in his last six versus Cleveland.
Rookie Dion Waiters has turned in back-to-back 21-point efforts for the Cavs, who lost 117-86 at New York on Thursday.
Cleveland fell to 4-7 since Luol Deng made his Cavs debut Jan. 10, and he was critical of the team's effort.
"You have to fight," Deng said. "It is one thing to play hard and lose and it is another thing to let the other team do what they want. As a person and as a man you have to stand up and play your heart out."
Houston forward Omri Casspi will face Cleveland for the first time since leaving the Cavs to join the Rockets as a free agent July 12.
