| | | NEW YORK: GUARDS: RAYMOND FELTON is still the best the Knicks can do at point guard. With his shortcomings in the half court, head coach Mike Woodson's desire to go up-tempo should play to Felton's skill set a little bit better . . . IMAN SHUMPERT should be ready for a slightly bigger role. He's their best perimeter defender and a good enough spot-up shooter to play off Carmelo Anthony . . . J.R. SMITH's offseason knee surgery is a bit of a concern, as is the fact that he's no longer in a contract year. Still, the reigning Sixth Man of the Year should light it up on many nights . . . PABLO PRIGIONI will be Felton's primary back-up. He disappears at times, but can at least knock down threes . . . BENO UDRIH will provide quality backup minutes after another solid year seeing big minutes in Orlando'TIM HARDAWAY JR. is likely looking at a redshirt year in 2013-14. FORWARDS: Last year was CARMELO ANTHONY's dream offense, with lots of isolation plays. With his improved three-point shot, Melo should make a run at a second-straight scoring title . . . ANDREA BARGNANI might start by default, but he's more suited to a part-time role as a one-dimensional floor spacer . . . Expect to see a lot of lineups with either Anthony or METTA WORLD PEACE at the four. MWP is still good enough defensively to justify his erratic shot selection . . . AMAR'E STOUDEMIRE will likely be limited to a part-time role due to injuries. He'll try to re-invent himself as a second-unit scorer . . . KENYON MARTIN will be counted on to play some four and five off the bench . . . Athletic rookie C.J. LESLIE is ticketed for the D-League. CENTERS: TYSON CHANDLER will be relied on heavily on the glass for what could be the weakest rebounding team in the NBA. The Knicks would like to keep his regular-season minutes down, but they may be forced to play him a lot if they're going to get home court in a first-round playoff series . . . The Knicks will try to develop JEREMY TYLER into a useful No. 2 center. | | HOUSTON: GUARDS: JAMES HARDEN is a franchise player, and as one of the league's elite pick-and-roll threats, he and Dwight Howard have the potential to be dominant . . . Trade rumors will continue to circle JEREMY LIN, who isn't an off-the-ball threat to fit alongside Harden. He is, however, clearly a starting-caliber point guard . . . PATRICK BEVERLEY really shined in back-up minutes last year, and he's part of the reason that Lin is expendable. He's strong defensively, and he proved capable of running the second unit. He'll be one of the league's top back-up PGs if Lin stays . . . Rookie combo guard ISAIAH CANAAN will be developed as a spot-up shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a roster filler . . . AARON BROOKS is around as a reclamation project . . . RONNIE BREWER provides a much-needed athletic perimeter defender. FORWARDS: CHANDLER PARSONS is an elite role player. He entered the league with the reputation as a pure athlete, but it's his ability to knock down the corner three that's made him so valuable in Houston . . . GREG SMITH looks like another great find for the Rockets. He's an athletic banger who can allow Dwight Howard to roam a bit on defense . . . DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS showed flashes as a rookie, but the stretch four looks like a situational role player for the foreseeable future . . . FRANCISCO GARCIA will lend a veteran presence to the second unit . . . Versatile TERRENCE JONES could be in for more minutes as the Rockets look for the right role players . . . OMRI CASSPI might be getting his last chance at the NBA. CENTERS: DWIGHT HOWARD should be much happier in Houston, though the Rockets still have to convince him that he can dominate as a pick-and-roll player. He should make everyone forget about his season with the Lakers . . . The fact is OMER ASIK just doesn't fit alongside Howard. But if he stays somewhat happy in Houston, he could be a valuable second-unit player . . . MARCUS CAMBY has latched on to chase a ring. |

*Knicks-Rockets Preview* ========================
By NICOLINO DIBENEDETTO STATS Writer
New York (10-21) at Houston (21-13), 8:00 p.m. EDT
The Houston Rockets are in search of consistency.
They've enjoyed plenty against the New York Knicks, despite Carmelo Anthony's efforts.
The Rockets look to avoid their longest slide of the season Friday night by earning a ninth straight win over the Knicks, who eye back-to-back upsets with Anthony back.
Houston (21-13) split its 16 December games, while never winning more than three in a row or losing more than back-to-back contests. The Rockets are outscoring opponents by an average of 12.2 points in those victories, while losing by 14.0.
Their three-game winning streak ended with a 117-86 loss at Oklahoma City on Sunday, two days before falling 110-106 to Sacramento.
"We've played some poor games and this was another," coach Kevin McHale said Tuesday. "It doesn't feel like we're in much of a rhythm."
That's certainly the case from beyond the arc, with the Rockets making 25.0 percent over the past two games. However, making just 59.4 percent of their free throws hasn't helped.
Facing the Knicks may be exactly what the Houston needs to avoid its first three-game slide since dropping seven straight from Jan. 9-19.
The Rockets have won 16 of the past 17 meetings with New York, including eight in a row at home. Their overall winning streak in the series reached eight games on Nov. 14, when they won 109-106 in New York.
Houston's recent success has come despite the Knicks getting tremendous production from Anthony. While he's missed two of four meetings due to injuries, Anthony has totaled 82 points while hitting 57.4 percent from the floor in the other two.
The superstar forward was vital to Thursday's 105-101 win at Southwest Division-leading San Antonio, scoring 27 points with 12 rebounds and four assists. He had missed the previous three games - all losses - with a sprained ankle.
"The effort level was very high, the energy level was very high," Anthony said. "We played like we wanted this game."
Iman Shumpert scored a career-high 27 points against the Spurs, putting the Knicks up for good with a tip-in with 23.4 seconds left in regulation.
"They doubled 'Melo, so a lot of times I was just wide open," Shumpert said.
Shumpert will likely have to contend with James Harden, who had 36 points with nine rebounds against New York on Nov. 14. He's averaging 30.3 points over his past four meetings, sinking 53.2 percent from the floor and 45 of 48 from the line.
Harden, who had a season-high 38 points and 10 boards Tuesday, scored 33 while all of the Rockets' starters reached double-digit points in a 131-103 win over New York in the most recent meeting at Toyota Center on Nov. 23, 2012.
Chandler Parsons chipped in with 31 points in that meeting, and he added 22 on Nov. 14.
Jeremy Lin has totaled 43 points over his last two games versus his former team.
