|
| | | CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: RAMON SESSIONS will have to adjust to a major downgrade in teammates, but he has the kind of versatile offensive skill set to be the focal point of this offense . . . The athletic GERALD HENDERSON has made strides the past two seasons. Realistically, his offensive skills are those of a No. 4 or 5 option . . . Coach Mike Dunlap is high on KEMBA WALKER, who was sometimes overwhelmed as a rookie. With a few new sets built in for him, he could thrive as a sixth man getting starter's minutes . . . BEN GORDON won't overtake Henderson, but should see big minutes as the Cats' only shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a D-League talent . . . MATT CARROLL, in the final year of his $27 million deal, symbolizes everything that's gone wrong under Michael Jordan. FORWARDS: Drafting MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST was as much about changing the losing culture as it was adding a piece they needed. MKG's statistical output is a question mark, but he'll see big minutes as a defensive stopper and intangibles guy . . . This team is seriously lacking in the post, where they may have no choice but to play TYRUS THOMAS for significant minutes. The talented but uber-underachieving big man claims to have added 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason. If nothing else, they might showcase him in a desperate attempt to get some trade value . . . Rookie JEFFERY TAYLOR figures to make the team and has the versatility and athleticism to be a respectable second-unit guy. CENTERS: Charlotte sees BISMACK BIYOMBO as a franchise cornerstone. He can certainly rebound and block shots, but his offense is atrocious . . . BRENDAN HAYWOOD brings a veteran presence. At his age he can't go more than 15 or so minutes per night . . . BYRON MULLENS never saw a shot he didn't like. He'll get one more chance to prove he's an NBA rotation player, able to play the four or five . . . DeSAGANA DIOP is doing those things that DeSagana Diop does. | | HOUSTON: GUARDS: Houston has gutted its roster, and this is JEREMY LIN's team now. Coach Kevin McHale will use the same pick-and-roll offense he used with Goran Dragic, and Lin should do what he did in New York a year ago . . . KEVIN MARTIN is on the trade block. As long as he's in Houston, he'll be in and out of McHale's doghouse, especially seeing that he's not in the long-term plans . . . JEREMY LAMB should push Martin for minutes early. Lamb will have some defensive issues, but he's a cagey scorer who should mesh well with Lin . . . CARLOS DELFINO replaces Chase Budinger as the team's most reliable marksman from three-point range . . . TONEY DOUGLAS' defensive ability puts him in the running for a rotation spot . . . SHAUN LIVINGSTON can give them 12 to 15 minutes a night . . . Rookie SCOTT MACHADO, an outstanding passer, will back up Lin . . . GARY FORBES will have trouble finding minutes. FORWARDS: CHANDLER PARSONS was a nice surprise a year ago. He's a fifth option offensively but does the hustle/energy thing well . . . 2011 first-rounder DONATAS MOTIEJUNAS is a skilled 7-footer who fits with Lin. Expect him to grab a starting job by midseason, but he can also play center when required . . . This might be the year PATRICK PATTERSON makes an impact. His game is limited, but he can rebound and score around the basket . . . ROYCE WHITE is a 270-pounder with point guard skills. He needs the ball in his hands though, which is why he's not a great fit with Lin in the starting lineup . . . TERRENCE JONES has a tweener skill set. At this point, he's better suited for the second unit . . . Speaking of 'tweeners, MARCUS MORRIS looks to be nowhere near contributing. CENTERS: OMER ASIK earned his reputation as a defensive stud in Chicago, and he'll get a little more offensive freedom in Houston. He is quite foul-prone though, and he'll be tested on the free-throw line early and often . . . His backup, GREG SMITH, has more fouls (17) than points (14) in his 69-minute NBA career. |

*Bobcats-Rockets Preview* =========================
By MATT BEARDMORE STATS Writer
Charlotte (11-34) at Houston (25-23), 8:00 p.m. EDT
The Houston Rockets spent plenty of time on the road and didn't enjoy a particularly successful January.
Perhaps a home game against the lowly Charlotte Bobcats on Saturday night will help Houston begin February on a positive note.
The Rockets (25-23), who played 12 of their 17 games in January outside Houston, opened 2013 with four straight victories as part of a 12-3 stretch. However, they followed with a seven-game losing streak, the team's longest in seven years.
Houston ended that skid Jan. 21 with a 100-94 victory over Charlotte (11-34), which suffered a franchise-record 15th straight home loss. The Rockets went on to sandwich two losses to Denver around a three-game win streak, ending the month with an 8-9 record.
"You never want to lose. You especially don't want to lose when it's self-inflicted, and we did," coach Kevin McHale said after his team committed 22 turnovers in Wednesday's 118-110 road loss to the Nuggets.
The Rockets, averaging a league-worst 16.6 turnovers, should be confident heading into this contest against a Charlotte team which has beaten only one above-.500 opponent since November. Plus, Houston has won four straight and 12 of 14 in the series, including seven in a row at home by an average of 16.9 points since losing the Bobcats' first visit in 2004.
Charlotte comes to town sporting an 0-2 record on its five-game trip. After shooting 39.5 percent in Monday's 93-85 loss to Chicago, the Bobcats committed a season-high 24 turnovers Wednesday in a 102-78 defeat to league-best San Antonio.
"They capitalized on all our mistakes," said Ben Gordon, who tied Kemba Walker with a team-worst five turnovers.
The Bobcats' 10 turnovers last month versus Houston were their second-fewest of the season, and they held the Rockets to 39.2 percent shooting.
Charlotte, though, will need to do a better job of keeping James Harden out of the lane. The first-time All-Star overcame a 5-of-20 performance from the field by taking 21 free throws - just three fewer than the Bobcats - and hitting 19 to finish with 29 points.
Harden, fifth in the NBA with 25.9 points per game, leads the league in free throws made per game (8.7) and attempted (10.1).
Walker, the Bobcats' scoring leader at 17.8 points per contest, set career highs with six 3-pointers and 35 points last month versus the Rockets. However, he missed 10 of 13 shots and scored six points in the Bobcats' last game in Houston, a 107-87 loss March 14.
It was recently announced that Walker will return to Houston in two weeks along with rookie teammate Michael Kidd-Gilchrist for the Rising Stars Challenge during All-Star weekend. Second-year player Chandler Parsons will represent the Rockets.
Parsons is averaging 14.2 points after scoring 21 on Wednesday for Houston, the league's second-highest scoring team with 105.0 per game. The Rockets are averaging 113.5 points on 50.2 percent shooting during an eight-game home win streak against East opponents.
Charlotte has lost six straight road games versus West teams by an average of 20.7 points.
