|
| | | MEMPHIS: GUARDS: The Grizzlies will scale back MIKE CONLEY's minutes a bit. He's a quality starting point guard, but seemed to lose some pep as last season wore on . . . TONY ALLEN figures to see more playing time now that O.J. Mayo is gone. He's an outstanding defender who will be the fifth option on offense . . . JERRYD BAYLESS figures to become the new sixth man and Allen platoon partner. He'll also spell Conley at the point, leading to solid minutes for the combo guard . . . Second-year man JOSH SELBY has a chance for a rotation spot after starring in the Summer League. He has big offensive upside . . . WAYNE ELLINGTON seems like an emergency plan for the second unit . . . This is likely a redshirt year for talented, but erratic, rookie TONY WROTEN. FORWARDS: RUDY GAY is going to lead the Grizzlies in touches and shots. He's not shy about looking for iso situations . . . ZACH RANDOLPH had trouble getting back into the flow after his knee injury. It's always been a fragile balance with Z-Bo, and he could be an odd man out going forward . . . MARREESE SPEIGHTS should be the offensive focal point of the bench unit as their sixth man . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER is a versatile defensive piece who will see solid minutes off the bench. He's a non-factor offensively, though . . . DARRELL ARTHUR suffered a non-displaced fractured in his leg in late September, and will not likely be ready when the season begins. A rising young big, his role will depend on when his athleticism comes back. CENTERS: The Grizzlies are at their best when MARC GASOL is getting touches and shots on the offensive end. Whether or not Gay and Randolph are willing to share is a concern, but Gasol has to be aggressive when the ball is in his hands . . . HAMED HADDADI will continue to play limited minutes off the bench. | | DETROIT: GUARDS: RODNEY STUCKEY was hampered by nagging injuries a year ago. If he's healthy, he's the best offensive weapon they have . . . BRANDON KNIGHT is more of a combo guard running the point. He can shoot, but doesn't bring much else to the table . . . With Ben Gordon gone, WILL BYNUM has a chance to regain a significant role . . . The Pistons' two second-round picks have a chance to carve out big roles. KIM ENGLISH has a skill set similar to Gordon's, capable of heating up and scoring in bunches . . . KHRIS MIDDLETON is more of a spot-up, catch-and-shoot threat only . . . Former No. 6 overall pick JONNY FLYNN agreed to a non-guaranteed contract in October, as he is no guarantee to even make this sorry roster. FORWARDS: TAYSHAUN PRINCE is still hanging on as the Pistons' best all-around player . . . JASON MAXIELL should be able to reclaim his starting spot early. He rebounds and takes up space . . . JONAS JEREBKO showed flashes but looked rusty in his first year back from an Achilles injury . . . 2011 2nd-rounder KYLE SINGLER has a good chance to step into the rotation after a solid year in Spain . . . COREY MAGGETTE was acquired in a Ben Gordon salary dump. He'll see limited minutes . . . AUSTIN DAYE regressed big-time last year. Unless he gets off to a hot start, he'll be on the outside looking in at the rotation . . . TERRENCE WILLIAMS is seeking a new lease on life, but could be too much of a head case to realize he's wasting his talent . . . The Pistons are counting down the days left on CHARLIE VILLANUEVA's contract (two years). CENTERS: GREG MONROE is a solid fit in Frank's system. He's not a great athlete, but he can score and move the ball on offense, as well as rebound . . . ANDRE DRUMMOND could one day be a perfect fit alongside Monroe. But for now, he'll watch and learn as a raw, boom-or-bust prospect . . . VIACHESLAV KRAVTSOV is an athletic big who will bring energy, but little offense in limited minutes. |

*Grizzlies-Pistons Preview* ===========================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Memphis (33-18) at Detroit (21-33), 7:30 p.m. EDT
Before the All-Star break, Memphis Grizzlies owner Robert Pera expressed confidence that a pair of trades have put his team in a good position.
The Grizzlies have found their stride lately with three straight wins, and two recently acquired players will try to help add to that run when they face their former Detroit Pistons teammates for the first time Tuesday night.
In his first press conference in Memphis since being introduced in November, Pera said last week that the deals that sent leading scorer Rudy Gay to Toronto on Jan. 30 and three reserves to Cleveland on Jan. 22 were more than just getting the team under the luxury tax threshold.
"With the latest trades, the personnel moves, how the team is constructed, I think it has the potential to be the best Grizzlies team yet," Pera said. "I really like how the pieces now fit kind of the traditional inside-out game. I think if they jell, then hopefully this could be the best playoff run yet."
Former Pistons Tayshaun Prince and Austin Daye were two players the Grizzlies (33-18) acquired in the three-team trade that featured Gay. Toronto sent point guard Jose Calderon to Detroit and forward Ed Davis to Memphis.
Prince, who was part of the Pistons' championship team in 2003-04 and played 10-plus seasons there, had 18 points and tied a franchise record by making all eight of his shots in Memphis' 105-88 win over Minnesota on Feb. 10. The forward, though, scored just seven points in a 108-101 victory against Sacramento last Tuesday.
Daye, selected No. 15 overall by Detroit in the 2009 draft, scored 16 points versus Minnesota and seven against the Kings.
Those games kicked off the Grizzlies' set of five straight matchups against sub-.500 teams, but the Pistons (21-33) have won three of four. Calderon scored a season-high 24 points and Will Bynum had 20 in a 96-85 home victory over Washington on Wednesday.
"I think there's chemistry now that we've played a couple games together," Bynum said. "We cause matchup problems for just about whatever team we are going to play, and it is going to continue to get better the more we play together. I'm loving this."
Greg Monroe matched a season high with 18 rebounds while recording his eighth consecutive double-double, the longest streak by a Pistons player since Grant Hill had 10 in a row March 1-17, 1996.
Monroe just missed his fourth straight double-double against the Grizzlies on Nov. 30, finishing with a team-best 17 points and nine rebounds in a 90-78 road loss.
Marc Gasol had 17 points and 11 boards, and Mike Conley also scored 17 points in the Grizzlies' sixth consecutive win in the series. Memphis has won in each of its last four visits to Detroit.
Grizzlies All-Star forward Zach Randolph has a combined 58 points and 30 rebounds in his last two games at The Palace of Auburn Hills. This time, he'll try to help Memphis avoid a season-high third consecutive road defeat.
