|
| | | INDIANA: GUARDS: Indy couldn't find an upgrade on GEORGE HILL this offseason, and losing Lance Stephenson and Paul George means Hill will have to play a more traditional ball-handling role this year . . . RODNEY STUCKEY's combo-guard skills probably make him the best fit alongside Hill. Whether he's up to the task defensively will decide whether he's a full-time player or a time-share guy . . . C.J. MILES will help fill the need for perimeter shooting, especially with Paul George out . . . They have a solid veteran back-up in C.J. WATSON. He's the closest thing to a pure point guard on this roster, and is a bigger need for the second unit than the starting five. FORWARDS: PAUL GEORGE was poised for an MVP run, but he'll now miss the season after a compound leg fracture during Team USA practice. He's no guarantee to ever return at full strength . . . DAVID WEST's floor-spacing, mid-range game is key in this system . . . He was a dud in his first season with the Pacers, but Indy might have no choice but to plug LUIS SCOLA into their thin frontcourt rotation . . . DAMJAN RUDEZ is a stretch-4 with three-point range. He could push Scola for a rotation spot . . . The Pacers are hoping SOLOMON HILL is ready to be a second-unit glue guy . . . LAVOY ALLEN brings size and opposable thumbs . . . They seemingly have little use for CHRIS COPELAND after signing Rudez. CENTERS: As strange as it seems, ROY HIBBERT might benefit most from the departure of Lance Stephenson. The big man was referring to Stephenson when he talked about selfish play. Of course, Hibbert's atrocious performance late last season is a problem in and of itself . . . IAN MAHINMI has size and six fouls to give. | | DENVER: GUARDS: TY LAWSON is the facilitator in Denver's up-tempo offense. Durability is a concern, as he missed 15-plus games for the third time in five career seasons during the 2013-14 campaign . . . ARRON AFFLALO is what the Nuggets need. He'll be a No. 3 scorer and, more importantly, gives them a big defensive upgrade . . . Denver can't afford to play RANDY FOYE so many minutes. He's a serviceable reserve, but they won't win games if he's playing 30-plus minutes . . . The Afflalo acquisition blocks him, but GARY HARRIS is tough-nosed on defense and a solid deep threat . . . NATE ROBINSON might unseat Foye for the sixth-man role by midseason, but first he'll have to work his way back from a torn ACL . . . Combo guard ERICK GREEN will pick up garbage-time minutes. FORWARDS: KENNETH FARIED is one of the few bright spots in Denver. He can't generate his own offense, but he's effective filling lanes and picking up garbage points in this system . . . If he's ever 100 percent healthy again, DANILO GALLINARI will be the go-to scorer on this team. But he's a question mark after missing all of last season with a torn ACL . . . WILSON CHANDLER won't be relied on as heavily this season, but he's going to get major minutes as a floor spacer who can play the 2-guard or either forward spot . . . Stretch-4 DARRELL ARTHUR is a solid rotation guy when he's shooting well, but he was laying bricks last season . . . QUINCY MILLER has intriguing athleticism, but remains a raw project . . . Even if he wasn't coming off a torn ACL, J.J. HICKSON would not make this rotation. CENTERS: TIMOFEY MOZGOV may have grabbed the lead in this center-by-committee group with his strong finish to last season . . . A stress fracture cost JaVALE McGEE his chance to secure a full-time role last season. The tantalizing, but consistently disappointing, big man should make the rotation, but has an uphill battle to earn minutes . . . JUSUF NURKIC is a high-upside project as a 7-footer with a legit NBA offensive skill set. |

*Pacers-Nuggets Preview* ========================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Senior Writer
Indiana (8-18) at Denver (11-15), 9:00 p.m. EDT
While dealing with multiple injuries throughout the season and having no go-to scorer, the Indiana Pacers have been forced to score by committee and mix the rotation constantly.
Coach Frank Vogel is attempting to take the positives out of each contest, though, and he's hoping his team can bounce back by ending a five-game road losing streak to the Denver Nuggets on Saturday night.
The Pacers (8-18) have struggled without Paul George being able to shoulder the scoring load, and the early absence of David West plus George Hill's injury haven't helped, either.
Hill has yet to play this season due to a left knee injury, but he returned to practice this week and could play as soon as Tuesday. Indiana will have to press on without him, though, and has lost nine of 10 after falling 102-100 to the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday.
Seven players scored in double figures - the same number that averages at least 10 points on the season - led by 17 apiece from West and reserve C.J. Miles. The Pacers' bench held a 42-17 scoring advantage.
"Our starters battled, the bench battled. I am very proud of our guys," Vogel said. "I'm just disappointed that we did not get the win."
Vogel has gotten creative with the manner in which he distributes minutes. Miles' 35-plus were the most of anyone who saw the floor for Indiana.
"We are learning each other's games pretty well," Miles said. "Coach mixes it up a little bit. David West is in with the second group sometimes with us, then (Rodney) Stuckey is the second group sometimes with us. We give them different looks and (opponents) are having to kind of pick their poison a little bit."
The Nuggets used a balanced attack in the first meeting Nov. 14, as Arron Afflalo scored 17 points to lead seven in double figures in a 108-87 rout in Indianapolis.
Denver (11-15) has won six of the last seven in the series and also had seven players in double figures Friday as it ended a three-game skid with a 109-106 home win over the Clippers. It held on after blowing a 59-43 halftime advantage just 4 1/2 minutes into the third quarter.
"We definitely have to do a better job on that, not losing a 16-point lead, but a win is a win. We'll take it," said Danilo Gallinari, who hit a clutch 3-pointer late and finished with 10 points.
Ty Lawson, who had 11 points and 10 assists against the Pacers, finished with 10 points and 14 assists against Los Angeles. Nate Robinson had two points in his previous two games combined but finished with a team-high 20 off the bench for Denver, which had dropped seven of eight.
"I was glad we were able to regroup, get the game back in order and create a big enough lead for us to be able to hold on at the end," coach Brian Shaw said.
Lawson is second in the league in assists at 10.7 per game.
Perhaps Indiana's best player, Roy Hibbert has struggled of late. He's scored in double figures twice over his last eight while reaching 10 rebounds only once and shooting 38.9 percent during that stretch.
