|
| | | MEMPHIS: GUARDS: MIKE CONLEY has steadily improved every season. He's now a borderline All-Star point guard . . . TONY ALLEN is back as the defensive half of Memphis' SG platoon. He's a favorite of new head coach David Joerger, the mastermind of the Grizzlies' suffocating defense as an assistant . . . JERRYD BAYLESS is on the cusp of being one of the NBA's top sixth men. He's the only pure scorer they have on the perimeter . . . MIKE MILLER's minutes will be limited in the regular season, but he's still an effective bench option with his long-range shooting . . . Ultra-athletic rookie JAMAAL FRANKLIN seems like a future rotation guy if/when he grasps Joerger's defensive schemes. FORWARDS: ZACH RANDOLPH has taken a back seat to Marc Gasol, but Z-Bo is still a dangerous low-post scorer. He might give way to Ed Davis a little more often when Memphis needs defense . . . TAYSHAUN PRINCE brought another quality defender to Memphis at last season's trade deadline. He's no better than a fifth option on offense, though . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER is one of the only shooters Memphis has, and he seems ready for a bigger role after a strong postseason performance. If nothing else, he's the heir apparent to Prince . . . ED DAVIS seems ready for a bigger role, but it's not coming behind Randolph and Gasol. He's a back-up for at least one more season . . . JON LEUER gives the Grizzlies another savvy reserve big. CENTERS: He's a bit overrated defensively (good, but not Defensive Player of the Year good), but MARC GASOL has emerged as the centerpiece of the Memphis offense. He's one of the league's best passing big men, to go along with some skill in the post . . . KOSTA KOUFOS gives them another 7-footer who can move the ball, though his role will be much smaller than it was in Denver. | | DENVER: GUARDS: TY LAWSON is turning into something of a one-man army as the roster around him crumbles. As good as he is as a quick playmaker who can knock down an open three, his supporting cast is lacking . . . EVAN FOURNIER is better than RANDY FOYE now, and he's certainly a bigger part of Denver's future. Fournier proved surprisingly ready for the NBA last season. While Foye brings more scoring power to a team that suddenly lacks offense, he's both inefficient and one-dimensional . . . NATE ROBINSON will provide instant offense and lead the second unit . . . ANDRE MILLER will lose a few minutes this year, but the 37-year-old still has good basketball left. FORWARDS: Coming off a late-season ACL tear, DANILO GALLINARI will be lucky to make it back by December . . . KENNETH FARIED will likely never develop into anything more than an energy guy and high-volume rebounder, but he's good at what he does . . . WILSON CHANDLER can shoot and defend multiple positions. With Gallinari a question mark, he could be in for a much bigger role this year . . . DARRELL ARTHUR is an interesting second-unit player. He's an athlete who was starting to show some skill in Memphis before getting hurt . . . Gunning wingman JORDAN HAMILTON may get a longer look in the second half of the season . . . QUINCY MILLER is likely ticketed for more D-League action . . . ANTHONY RANDOLPH is a lost cause. CENTERS: The time has arrived for JAVALE MCGEE. The front office wants him on the floor full-time. For all the knucklehead plays, he's still an incredible athlete in a massive 7-foot frame . . . Talk of J.J. HICKSON potentially starting is absurd. A brutal defender unable to play within the flow of an offense, he's a second-unit talent . . . TIMOFEY MOZGOV is Plan B behind McGee. The 7-footer can defend and set screens. |

*Grizzlies-Nuggets Preview* ===========================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Memphis (14-17) at Denver (14-17), 9:00 p.m. EDT
The Memphis Grizzlies' relatively successful stretch includes a lopsided win against a Denver Nuggets team seemingly in disarray.
The Nuggets have lost eight in a row heading into Friday night's rematch and suspended veteran guard Andre Miller for the next two games.
Memphis (14-17) has won four of its last six games and blew out the Nuggets 120-99 on Saturday. The Grizzlies added a 99-91 victory in Phoenix on Thursday with Zach Randolph scoring at least 20 points for the fifth time in six contests and recording his fifth double-double in that span by pulling down 15 rebounds.
Reserve point guard Jerryd Bayless had 13 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter while helping Memphis outscore his hometown team 30-18. The Grizzlies also outrebounded Phoenix 59-40.
"When J.B. (Bayless) hits shots like that it opens up for us," Randolph said. "We can play in the paint."
In last week's game against Denver, Randolph scored a team-best 20 points and was one of six players in double figures as the Grizzlies outscored the Nuggets 54-30 in the paint. Four of those players, including Bayless, came from Memphis' bench, which had a season-high 62 points.
The Grizzlies will try to earn another win against a team that's on the verge of its longest skid in 11 seasons. The Nuggets (14-17) haven't dropped nine straight since a 14-game losing streak Feb. 6-March 5, 2003.
Denver is also trying to avoid its first six-game skid at home since a string of seven consecutive defeats during that same season, and it will have less depth for that attempt. The Nuggets suspended Miller on Thursday for "conduct detrimental to the team."
The point guard was held out of a game while healthy for the first time in his career in a 114-102 loss to Philadelphia on Wednesday, and there are reports he has vocally expressed his displeasure with coach Brian Shaw about his lack of playing time. The 15-year veteran was averaging career lows of 19.0 minutes, 5.9 points and 3.3 assists.
"It just came to a boiling point. We made a decision and we're moving forward," coach Brian Shaw said.
Shaw later met for several hours with the rest of his beleaguered team.
"Everybody got their feelings out. Everybody said what needed to be said," point guard Ty Lawson said. "Hopefully everybody can take that to heart and change so we can start getting wins. It's always healthy to get things out and get everything in the open. Hopefully, this will be a turning point for the rest of the season."
Denver will try to begin its turnaround by earning its 31st win in 35 home meetings with the Grizzlies. The Nuggets have also won 27 of the past 29 matchups there and 10 of 11.
They will likely need a better offensive showing to add to that stellar record. Denver is averaging 93.5 points during its losing streak, 8.6 fewer than in its first 23 this season, and is shooting a league-worst 41.1 percent.
The Nuggets are also allowing 105.6 points per game in their last eight after previously allowing an average of 99.8.
