|
| | | OKLAHOMA CITY: GUARDS: RUSSELL WESTBROOK can do whatever he wants inside the arc and will continue to be a shoot-first point guard . . . JAMES HARDEN will likely keep coming off the bench, but he'll also keep playing starter's minutes . . . THABO SEFOLOSHA is OKC's best perimeter defender. But his role won't become more prominent until the postseason . . . ERIC MAYNOR should be just about all the way back from his torn ACL. When healthy, he's one of the league's best backup point guards . . . DAEQUAN COOK will see limited minutes as a three-point specialist . . . REGGIE JACKSON's role will shrink to near nothing if Maynor is healthy. FORWARDS: KEVIN DURANT continues to do it all, and has done nothing but steadily improve each season . . . SERGE IBAKA is obviously an elite shot-blocker, but he continues to get lost in space. He's made some strides as a pick-and-roll defender, but that weakness is why he doesn't play 30 minutes per night . . . NICK COLLISON will continue to steal a lot of Ibaka's minutes because he defends the pick-and-roll better, and because he draws so many charges, he's almost as good in help situations . . . PERRY JONES III is an incredible athlete, but needs a year or two to learn the game . . . LAZAR HAYWARD is back as a 12th man. CENTERS: KENDRICK PERKINS will continue to start, but is a part-time player. The Thunder are often better with a small lineup. While Perkins is a bruiser he is too easy to exploit as a defender in space . . . COLE ALDRICH could be ready for a slightly bigger role off the bench . . . HASHEEM THABEET is a reclamation project. There's a sliver of long-term hope, but he won't help this year. | | DALLAS: GUARDS: DARREN COLLISON's jump shot might be shaky, but he can get into the lane at will. He'll be a much different look than Jason Kidd had been in Big D . . . O.J. MAYO becomes the second option in this offense. He'll have the ball in his hands a lot . . . VINCE CARTER will come off the bench. At this point, he's a three-point specialist, and not a very good one . . . DELONTE WEST will back up both guard spots. Don't be surprised if he overtakes Collison at some point . . . RODDY BEAUBOIS can heat up in an instant, but he has work to do to make this rotation . . . DAHNTAY JONES is roster filler . . . DOMINIQUE JONES enters the year on the roster bubble . . . JARED CUNNINGHAM will learn the point guard position watching from the bench as a rookie. FORWARDS: After a slow start last season, DIRK NOWITZKI looked like the Dirk of old in the second half of the year. He's still got something left in the tank, but it's still unclear if the swelling in his knee will require surgery, something that would shelve him for more than a month . . . SHAWN MARION is still an important cog in Carlisle's creative defensive gameplans, so he'll keep playing big minutes despite his dwindling offensive skills . . . ELTON BRAND is still relevant, even behind Nowitzki, because of his ability to play some center . . . BRANDAN WRIGHT will be in and out of the rotation again, but he's now relatively healthy and showed signs of being a serviceable rotation player a year ago . . . Rookie Jae CROWDER profiles as a potentially solid second-unit player, but he'll be buried on this depth chart. CENTERS: CHRIS KAMAN gives Dallas some offensive skill at center, but he's not exactly the defensive presence they've needed. He'll log the bulk of the minutes here, but there are going to be a handful of games where the Mavs have to sit him and go small for defensive purposes . . . 27-year-old rookie BERNARD JAMES could fill Ian Mahinmi's old role of a shot-blocker/fouler off the bench.

*Thunder-Mavericks Preview* ===========================
By TAYLOR BECHTOLD STATS Writer
Oklahoma City (49-17) at Dallas (31-34), 7:30 p.m. EDT
While the Oklahoma City Thunder have the NBA's third-best record and are playing well, they haven't exactly been dominant on the road.
Kevin Durant's career night ensured Oklahoma City escaped with an overtime win in its last trip to Dallas, and the Thunder return there Sunday night trying to win their 10th straight - including the postseason - against the Mavericks and for the 11th time in 13 games overall.
Durant scored 26 points, Russell Westbrook had 23 and Serge Ibaka added 20 as Oklahoma City pulled away late to beat the lowly Magic 117-104 on Friday. The Thunder (49-17) trail San Antonio by 1 1/2 games for the top seed in the West Conference.
"We just didn't play with the focus we needed," coach Scott Brooks said. "We missed too many free throws, layups and missed opportunities."
While Oklahoma City won its seventh straight at home and trails only Miami and Denver for the league's best home record, it's been a different story on the road.
The Thunder claimed solid victories over New York and the Los Angeles Clippers during a recent three-game road winning streak, but have lost six of 10 there following a 105-93 loss at San Antonio on Monday.
Now Oklahoma City looks to get back on track against the Mavericks, who rallied late to force overtime in a 117-114 loss in the last meeting in Dallas on Jan. 18. Durant, though, finished with a career-high 52 points in that win, sinking all 21 of his free throws and going 5 for 9 from 3-point range as part of a 13-for-31 shooting night.
The All-Star forward, who also had 40 points in a 111-105 overtime win over Dallas on Dec. 27, has scored 37.0 per game while making 36 of 37 from the free-throw line in the season series.
Westbrook, the team's second-leading scorer, finished with a team-high 24 points in a 112-91 home victory on Feb. 4. He also has reached 30 points in each of his last two regular-season games in Dallas.
The Thunder have averaged 113.5 points on 54.5 percent shooting in back-to-back victories. They've also scored 113.3 per game and shot 76 for 91 (83.5 percent) from the free-throw line against the Mavericks.
Dallas, though, has allowed 90.8 points per game on 43.1 percent shooting over their last four games heading into this meeting.
The Mavericks (31-34) are trying to stay in the playoff chase, trailing the eighth-place Los Angeles Lakers by three games as they continue a stretch with eight of nine at home.
Reserve guard Rodrigue Beaubois gave the team a lift with 18 points as Dallas captured its sixth win in eight games with a 96-86 victory over Cleveland on Friday.
"We have to make sure that everybody's ready," Beaubois said. "Even if you don't play, the next game maybe you're going to get in."
Dirk Nowitzki, who had 13 points on 6-of-17 shooting on Friday, may have a difficult getting back on track since he's averaged 12.3 points on 11-of-41 (26.8 percent) shooting in this series.
Shawn Marion, who led the team with 23 points in the January loss, is expected to miss his sixth straight game because of a strained left calf.
The Thunder have won four in a row in Dallas and nine straight overall against the Mavericks, including last season's playoff sweep.
