|
| | | TORONTO: GUARDS: DeMAR DeROZAN has evolved from raw athlete into dangerous scorer. He gets to the line frequently enough that he's virtually guaranteed a 20-PPG average . . . There's some long-term worry with KYLE LOWRY. His stocky body type leaves little room for error on those contested threes he hits, and there's some question of motivation now that he's been paid. But he was so good last season, that the chances of a fall-off seem low . . . Along with being the primary back-up at point guard, GREIVIS VASQUEZ will play alongside Lowry at times to take ball-handling pressure off of him . . . LOUIS WILLIAMS should be closer to 100 percent in his second season off ACL surgery, though he's looking at a fourth guard role in Toronto. FORWARDS: AMIR JOHNSON will lead the rotation at the 4, providing rim protection, rebounding and hustle baskets . . . He's streaky, but uber dunker TERRENCE ROSS is reinventing himself as a three-point shooter . . . Stretch 4 PATRICK PATTERSON has added a corner three to supplement a below-the-rim game . . . TYLER HANSBROUGH's spastic style is a thing of beauty . . . JAMES JOHNSON returns to Toronto. He's more versatile than his doughy frame would suggest . . . Undersized big CHUCK HAYES will throw his weight around for 15 minutes a night . . . Draft night stunner BRUNO CABOCLO is likely headed for the D-League . . . Ditto DeANDRE DANIELS . . . Not too long ago multiple teams fought over LANDRY FIELDS, but those days are long gone. CENTERS: JONAS VALANCIUNAS still has to add some nuance to his game (such as making physical contact with a defender when he sets a screen) if he's going to get full-time minutes. But the big upside is still there . . . LUCAS NOGUEIRA, a 2013 first-rounder picked up from Atlanta, gives them a rim protector . . . GREG STIEMSMA was added in early September to provide depth at the center position. | | CHICAGO: GUARDS: There's no medical reason why DERRICK ROSE can't be 100 percent healthy this year. But, as we saw in abbreviated action last season, his confidence may never come back . . . JIMMY BUTLER will still play major minutes this year, though Chicago's added depth on the wing means he's no longer a candidate to lead the league in playing time . . . KIRK HINRICH will return to a straight back-up role. His defense guarantees him minutes at both guard spots in a reserve role . . . TONY SNELL was inconsistent as a rookie, but has the defensive skill set to play solid minutes . . . AARON BROOKS gives the Bulls a more offense-heavy option to lead the second unit. He has his work cut out for him to claim the role D.J. Augustin held last season. FORWARDS: Despite the rough end to his Lakers career, PAU GASOL still has something left in the tank. He will see fewer minutes in a deep Bulls frontcourt, but he's a great fit on the offensive end . . . It seems like only a matter of time before MIKE DUNLEAVY relinquishes his starting spot. The Bulls now have plenty of shooters on this roster . . . TAJ GIBSON will reprise his sixth-man role. He'll be one of the league's top reserves; talent-wise he's a borderline All-Star . . . Rookie DOUG McDERMOTT will supplant Dunleavy once he grasps head coach Tom Thibodeau's defensive concepts. McDermott is an elite shooter who can get by defensively . . . NIKOLA MIROTIC might have some growing pains, but the Euro star can play the 3 or stretch-4 and has a very good offensive game. CENTERS: JOAKIM NOAH is an elite center, as he's outstanding defensively and has developed into one of the best passing big men in the NBA. The Bulls will do what they can to keep him fresh for the postseason, a luxury they have with Gasol and Mirotic adding depth to the frontcourt rotation. NAZR MOHAMMED is back as a big body with the ability to consistently keep the bench warm. |

*Raptors-Bulls Preview* =======================
By JACK CASSIDY STATS Writer
Toronto (22-6) at Chicago (17-9), 8:00 p.m. EDT
The red-hot Toronto Raptors have the best record in the Eastern Conference and are on pace to be the best team in franchise history, but they've enjoyed much of their early success at home.
They're about to see just how well they can handle a lengthy and challenging road trip.
Prior to heading out west, the Raptors look for a bit of revenge against one of the few teams to beat them north of the border as they kick off their trip Monday night against the Chicago Bulls.
The Raptors (22-6) have won 20 games before Christmas for the first time in team history, are primed to blow past last season's franchise-best 48-win mark and on Monday can win their seventh in a row - which would stand as Toronto's longest win streak since a nine-game run late in the 2001-02 season.
Any impending success, however, will have to take place on the road. The Raptors' stop in Chicago marks the start of a season-high six-game trip after they've played an NBA-high 17 home games so far.
"I'm ready for it," coach Dwane Casey told the team's official website. "I've been preaching it, and we should be ready for it. Everyone is all excited."
The Bulls (17-9) are the first of four opponents on this trip with a winning percentage of at least .654. Each of the Raptors' victories during this streak has come against teams with sub-.500 records, including a 118-108 win over New York on Sunday.
"It's important that we play good teams because it's really going to test our character," said Greivis Vasquez, who scored 21 points and joined Kyle Lowry and Lou Williams (22 each) with 20-plus. "We haven't really faced adversity and everything right now is great, but I think we're ready for a couple of premium tests."
Even without DeMar DeRozan since Nov. 30, the Raptors have managed to lead the NBA in points per 100 possessions (113.1) in December.
Chicago managed to disrupt Toronto's offense at the Air Canada Centre on Nov. 13, holding the Raptors to a season-worst 39.3 percent mark from the field in a 100-93 win. Pau Gasol led the way with 27 points and 11 rebounds while Jimmy Butler added 21 points, nine boards and six assists.
The Bulls are 13-2 when they hold opponents to fewer than 100 points - a feat they've accomplished in each of their last four games, most recently in a 103-97 win at Memphis on Friday.
After scoring a career-high 35 in a victory over New York on Thursday, Butler followed it with 31 and 10 rebounds against the Grizzlies.
"Jimmy, every time that game was hanging in the balance he came through with a big play for us," coach Tom Thibodeau told the Bulls' official website. "Clutch play after clutch play. Great defense. No possessions off. Plays were great. Intensity was great. Great concentration. You can't say enough about what he does. Huge, huge."
Butler helped the Bulls get by Friday without Derrick Rose and Taj Gibson, both of whom are expected to return Monday. Rose, who had 13 second-half points in the first meeting with Toronto, has missed the last two games with an illness, while Gibson sat out both with a right ankle injury.
The Bulls have lost their last three home games against the Raptors - all without Rose - while being held to an average of 84.7 points.
