| | | NEW ORLEANS: GUARDS: This offense will belong to ERIC GORDON. He'll get over the fact that the Hornets matched his offer from Phoenix, and as long as his surgically-repaired knee holds up, he's one of the most complete young scorers in the NBA . . . The Hornets reached for AUSTIN RIVERS with the 10th pick because Monty Williams wants to coach him and thinks he can be an NBA point guard. Rivers has the handle, but his athleticism is ordinary and, more importantly, he has never shown a PG mentality at any level . . . GREIVIS VASQUEZ is the closest thing to a true point guard on this roster. He'll see solid minutes assuming Rivers' adjustment is a tough one . . . Well-rounded ROGER MASON JR. will also provide point guard depth . . . XAVIER HENRY hasn't lived up to his reputation as a shooter, but the Hornets can be patient with him . . . Rookie BRIAN ROBERTS has had a strong enough preseason to likely earn a roster spot. FORWARDS: ANTHONY DAVIS should step right in as a starter. His offensive game is further along than he gets credit for, and on the defensive end he's an absolute force from the basket out to the perimeter . . . He'll probably miss having Dwight Howard drawing in defenses, but RYAN ANDERSON has always been a very good three-point shooter. He and Davis are unique enough talents to share the court even if they're both power forwards . . . AL-FAROUQ AMINU made some strides on the defensive end late last season, which is what will get him minutes under Williams. He's underwhelming on the offensive end . . . If HAKIM WARRICK couldn't succeed as Steve Nash's pick-and-roll partner, it seems unlikely he'll ever help in New Orleans . . . Rookie DARIUS MILLER is looking to establish some kind of role with the team . . . LANCE THOMAS is doubtful to earn a salary to pay off his jewelry debts. CENTERS: ROBIN LOPEZ has always had the ability to protect the rim and does a decent job in space. Look for him to end up grabbing the bulk of minutes in the middle . . . JASON SMITH gives the Hornets a more offensive-minded option off the bench. | | CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: RAMON SESSIONS will have to adjust to a major downgrade in teammates, but he has the kind of versatile offensive skill set to be the focal point of this offense . . . The athletic GERALD HENDERSON has made strides the past two seasons. Realistically, his offensive skills are those of a No. 4 or 5 option . . . Coach Mike Dunlap is high on KEMBA WALKER, who was sometimes overwhelmed as a rookie. With a few new sets built in for him, he could thrive as a sixth man getting starter's minutes . . . BEN GORDON won't overtake Henderson, but should see big minutes as the Cats' only shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a D-League talent . . . MATT CARROLL, in the final year of his $27 million deal, symbolizes everything that's gone wrong under Michael Jordan. FORWARDS: Drafting MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST was as much about changing the losing culture as it was adding a piece they needed. MKG's statistical output is a question mark, but he'll see big minutes as a defensive stopper and intangibles guy . . . This team is seriously lacking in the post, where they may have no choice but to play TYRUS THOMAS for significant minutes. The talented but uber-underachieving big man claims to have added 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason. If nothing else, they might showcase him in a desperate attempt to get some trade value . . . Rookie JEFFERY TAYLOR figures to make the team and has the versatility and athleticism to be a respectable second-unit guy. CENTERS: Charlotte sees BISMACK BIYOMBO as a franchise cornerstone. He can certainly rebound and block shots, but his offense is atrocious . . . BRENDAN HAYWOOD brings a veteran presence. At his age he can't go more than 15 or so minutes per night . . . BYRON MULLENS never saw a shot he didn't like. He'll get one more chance to prove he's an NBA rotation player, able to play the four or five . . . DeSAGANA DIOP is doing those things that DeSagana Diop does. |

*Hornets-Bobcats Preview* =========================
By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer
New Orleans (6-23) at Charlotte (7-22), 7:00 p.m. EDT
Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist only lost twice as freshmen at Kentucky last season while winning a national championship. With both now playing for rebuilding franchises in the NBA, they're finding things a little more difficult.
Davis' New Orleans Hornets and Kidd-Gilchrist's Charlotte Bobcats are a combined 1-25 since Dec. 5. They will meet for the second time this season on Saturday night in Charlotte.
The Hornets beat the Bobcats 107-99 on Nov. 9, but Charlotte (7-22) quickly rebounded by winning six of its next eight to improve to 7-5 and match its entire win total from 2011-12.
But they haven't improved on that figure since. The Bobcats have lost 17 straight, creeping closer to the 23-game losing streak that wrapped up last season. The longest slump in NBA history is Cleveland's 26 consecutive losses during the 2010-11 season.
Charlotte gave itself little chance to end the streak Friday, missing 13 of its first 16 shots to fall into an 18-point deficit against Brooklyn. The final losing tally was 97-81 against a Nets team that had fired its coach only a day earlier. Kidd-Gilchrist struggled with three points on 1-of-6 shooting and Hakim Warrick's 13 points were enough for a team high.
The Bobcats actually outscored Brooklyn 66-64 over the final three quarters.
"It's tough. We can't put ourselves in that kind of position," said Kemba Walker, who paces the Bobcats with 18.2 points per game.
Charlotte has made slow starts a habit and has been outscored by an average of 6.8 points in the first quarter during its losing streak.
"We don't have a lot of depth on our team to come back against great teams, but we do every once in a while, but we can't do that all the time," said Walker, who was held to five points on 2-of-10 shooting. "We dig ourselves in holes we can't get out of."
Davis, averaging 15.1 points and 8.4 rebounds, is having more individual success than Kidd-Gilchrist (10.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg), but the Hornets (6-23) have lost 12 of 13, with the lone win coming over Orlando on Wednesday.
Davis was three shy of a season high with 25 points on Friday as New Orleans pushed the Raptors to overtime before falling 104-97.
"Once he gets stronger, it's going to be game time," Hornets coach Monty Williams said of Davis, who is third among rookies with 2.8 blocks per 48 minutes.
"He's starting to figure out how to use his quickness to get to the basket, and he's starting to make jump shots."
Reserve forward Jason Smith returned for the Hornets on Friday after missing the last seven games with a torn labrum. He scored two points in 12 minutes but should give the Hornets' front line more depth as they try for their fourth straight win in Charlotte.
Ben Gordon had a season-high 34 points off the bench for the Bobcats in the season's first meeting. Gordon, whose career 22.1-scoring average against the Hornets is his highest against any team, scored 10 against Brooklyn after missing the previous three games with right knee soreness.
