|
| | | PORTLAND: GUARDS: Portland will turn point guard duties over to rookie DAMIAN LILLARD. The leap from Big Sky Conference to NBA will be a big one, but Lillard is an efficient scorer who can manage the offense . . . WESLEY MATTHEWS is more of a glue guy. He can't create his own offense, but he can heat up as a streaky catch-and-shoot guy . . . RONNIE PRICE should emerge as Lillard's top backup, a role he's filled at numerous stops . . . Second-rounder WILL BARTON could emerge as a rotation player. He's a versatile wing who must prove he can play off the ball . . . SASHA PAVLOVIC will play both the two and three, and can still stroke it from long distance . . . NOLAN SMITH, a misstep of the last regime, is a fringe roster player . . . ELLIOT WILLIAMS, a defensive-minded combo guard, tore his Achilles in mid-September and expects to miss the entire season. FORWARDS: LaMARCUS ALDRIDGE had a couple of health scares over the past six months, but he should enter the season 100 percent. He's clearly Portland's best player . . . NICOLAS BATUM felt rightly disrespected by his secondary role in Portland. All signs point to a bigger role in 2012-13 . . . VICTOR CLAVER is an athletic scrapper who won't do much offensively even if he does get big minutes . . . JOEL FREELAND could become their first big man off the bench . . . JARED JEFFRIES is still relevant as a defensive specialist . . . The highlight of LUKE BABBITT's career might be that mention on Onion:Sportsdome. CENTERS: J.J. HICKSON is a black hole on offense and a liability on defense, but he can score and rebound, which is good enough to be the starting center in Portland's weak frontcourt . . . MEYERS LEONARD might not be quite ready for 30-plus minutes, but he'll have to learn on the fly due to Portland's lack of veteran bigs. He has some long-term upside as a 7-footer with some nice athleticism and touch inside 10 feet. | | CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: RAMON SESSIONS will have to adjust to a major downgrade in teammates, but he has the kind of versatile offensive skill set to be the focal point of this offense . . . The athletic GERALD HENDERSON has made strides the past two seasons. Realistically, his offensive skills are those of a No. 4 or 5 option . . . Coach Mike Dunlap is high on KEMBA WALKER, who was sometimes overwhelmed as a rookie. With a few new sets built in for him, he could thrive as a sixth man getting starter's minutes . . . BEN GORDON won't overtake Henderson, but should see big minutes as the Cats' only shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a D-League talent . . . MATT CARROLL, in the final year of his $27 million deal, symbolizes everything that's gone wrong under Michael Jordan. FORWARDS: Drafting MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST was as much about changing the losing culture as it was adding a piece they needed. MKG's statistical output is a question mark, but he'll see big minutes as a defensive stopper and intangibles guy . . . This team is seriously lacking in the post, where they may have no choice but to play TYRUS THOMAS for significant minutes. The talented but uber-underachieving big man claims to have added 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason. If nothing else, they might showcase him in a desperate attempt to get some trade value . . . Rookie JEFFERY TAYLOR figures to make the team and has the versatility and athleticism to be a respectable second-unit guy. CENTERS: Charlotte sees BISMACK BIYOMBO as a franchise cornerstone. He can certainly rebound and block shots, but his offense is atrocious . . . BRENDAN HAYWOOD brings a veteran presence. At his age he can't go more than 15 or so minutes per night . . . BYRON MULLENS never saw a shot he didn't like. He'll get one more chance to prove he's an NBA rotation player, able to play the four or five . . . DeSAGANA DIOP is doing those things that DeSagana Diop does. |

*Trail Blazers-Bobcats Preview* ===============================
By JORDAN GARRETSON STATS Writer
Portland (7-10) at Charlotte (7-8), 7:00 p.m. EDT
The Charlotte Bobcats appear to have significantly improved from last season but need to fortify their defense to right their current slump.
In their fourth attempt to surpass their win total from all of last season, the Bobcats look to avenge the worst loss in franchise history as they host the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night.
Charlotte (7-8) had won six of eight before dropping its last three games, including a 104-98 home loss to Philadelphia on Friday.
Still, the Bobcats' next victory will give them one more than they had in 2011-12, when they posted the worst winning percentage in NBA history. They finished 7-59 while being outscored by an average of 13.9 points per game.
This season, with a starting lineup that includes four players age 23 or younger, Charlotte is averaging 94.9 points to opponents' 100.5.
"I see the improvement within the losing," said first-year coach Mike Dunlap, whose Bobcats trailed by as many as 10 in the third quarter Friday but tied the game early in the fourth.
"Maybe some don't and maybe they want to rush us. I'd certainly like to win a game like tonight, but I thought we did a marvelous job of coming back into this game. But this is a playoff team we played, so I think we ultimately have to raise our eye and understand where we're at on the continuum of improvement."
Charlotte's offense wasn't the problem after being held to a combined 34.2 percent from the field in the previous two losses. The Bobcats shot 47.0 percent, including 8 of 17 from 3-point range, with Ben Gordon scoring 19 and rookie Jeffery Taylor a season-high 16.
But they allowed the 76ers to shoot 51.2 percent, the third time in five games Charlotte's opponent made more than half of its shots. The Bobcats have given up more than 100 points in four of five games after going six straight without doing so.
"Anytime we trade baskets with a good team, a quality team, like that, you know it's going to bite you," said Gordon, 15 of 24 from 3-point range over the past four games.
"... We've just got to clean up our defensive intensity."
They certainly lacked intensity the last time they faced Portland. In the teams' only meeting last season, Charlotte was handed the largest margin of defeat in team history with a 112-68 loss in Portland on Feb. 1. All of the Blazers' starters sat out the fourth quarter.
They rolled to that win playing without an injured Nicolas Batum, who helped Portland (7-10) end a four-game losing streak in dramatic fashion Saturday.
Batum hit a 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds remaining in double overtime for a 118-117 victory over Cleveland. The game appeared to end on Batum's buzzer-beater in the first overtime, but a video review showed that the shot came after time expired.
"After the one in the first overtime was too late, I had to make sure this one counted," said Batum, who scored 22 on 7-of-15 shooting. He shot 10 for 35 over the previous three games.
Rookie Damian Lillard had a team-best 24 points and a season-high 11 assists for the Blazers, whose 1-4 record on a seven-game road trip includes a defeat to previously winless Washington.
"Breaking the losing streak was really important, because losing can take its toll mentally, and I liked the way we played all night," coach Terry Stotts said.
The Blazers have won five of six in this series, holding Charlotte to 76.8 points per game.
