|
| | | MEMPHIS: GUARDS: The Grizzlies will scale back MIKE CONLEY's minutes a bit. He's a quality starting point guard, but seemed to lose some pep as last season wore on . . . TONY ALLEN figures to see more playing time now that O.J. Mayo is gone. He's an outstanding defender who will be the fifth option on offense . . . JERRYD BAYLESS figures to become the new sixth man and Allen platoon partner. He'll also spell Conley at the point, leading to solid minutes for the combo guard . . . Second-year man JOSH SELBY has a chance for a rotation spot after starring in the Summer League. He has big offensive upside . . . WAYNE ELLINGTON seems like an emergency plan for the second unit . . . This is likely a redshirt year for talented, but erratic, rookie TONY WROTEN. FORWARDS: RUDY GAY is going to lead the Grizzlies in touches and shots. He's not shy about looking for iso situations . . . ZACH RANDOLPH had trouble getting back into the flow after his knee injury. It's always been a fragile balance with Z-Bo, and he could be an odd man out going forward . . . MARREESE SPEIGHTS should be the offensive focal point of the bench unit as their sixth man . . . QUINCY PONDEXTER is a versatile defensive piece who will see solid minutes off the bench. He's a non-factor offensively, though . . . DARRELL ARTHUR suffered a non-displaced fractured in his leg in late September, and will not likely be ready when the season begins. A rising young big, his role will depend on when his athleticism comes back. CENTERS: The Grizzlies are at their best when MARC GASOL is getting touches and shots on the offensive end. Whether or not Gay and Randolph are willing to share is a concern, but Gasol has to be aggressive when the ball is in his hands . . . HAMED HADDADI will continue to play limited minutes off the bench. | | CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: RAMON SESSIONS will have to adjust to a major downgrade in teammates, but he has the kind of versatile offensive skill set to be the focal point of this offense . . . The athletic GERALD HENDERSON has made strides the past two seasons. Realistically, his offensive skills are those of a No. 4 or 5 option . . . Coach Mike Dunlap is high on KEMBA WALKER, who was sometimes overwhelmed as a rookie. With a few new sets built in for him, he could thrive as a sixth man getting starter's minutes . . . BEN GORDON won't overtake Henderson, but should see big minutes as the Cats' only shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a D-League talent . . . MATT CARROLL, in the final year of his $27 million deal, symbolizes everything that's gone wrong under Michael Jordan. FORWARDS: Drafting MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST was as much about changing the losing culture as it was adding a piece they needed. MKG's statistical output is a question mark, but he'll see big minutes as a defensive stopper and intangibles guy . . . This team is seriously lacking in the post, where they may have no choice but to play TYRUS THOMAS for significant minutes. The talented but uber-underachieving big man claims to have added 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason. If nothing else, they might showcase him in a desperate attempt to get some trade value . . . Rookie JEFFERY TAYLOR figures to make the team and has the versatility and athleticism to be a respectable second-unit guy. CENTERS: Charlotte sees BISMACK BIYOMBO as a franchise cornerstone. He can certainly rebound and block shots, but his offense is atrocious . . . BRENDAN HAYWOOD brings a veteran presence. At his age he can't go more than 15 or so minutes per night . . . BYRON MULLENS never saw a shot he didn't like. He'll get one more chance to prove he's an NBA rotation player, able to play the four or five . . . DeSAGANA DIOP is doing those things that DeSagana Diop does. |

*Grizzlies-Bobcats Preview* ===========================
By JEFF BARTL STATS Writer
Memphis (7-1) at Charlotte (4-3), 7:30 p.m. EDT
Any notions that the Memphis Grizzlies' hot start is a fluke likely have been dispelled over the past week.
After a stretch of marquee victories, streaking Memphis visits a surprising Charlotte Bobcats team seeking a fourth consecutive victory Saturday night.
The Grizzlies (7-1) dropped their opener to the Los Angeles Clippers on Halloween night, but they've since rattled off seven straight wins with the majority coming against quality foes.
Memphis' victims include last season's NBA finals participants after it routed Miami 104-86 on Sunday before knocking off Oklahoma City 107-97 on Wednesday.
The Grizzlies then defeated previously unbeaten New York 105-95 on Friday behind a game-high 24 points from Marc Gasol and 20 points and 15 rebounds from Zach Randolph.
Rudy Gay added 17 points while Mike Conley finished with 16 and eight assists.
"I think we are playing well right now, obviously," Conley said. "We have played some very good teams in the past week. (We) are just going to try and keep it going."
Memphis, which has five wins by double digits, is on the verge of its first eight-game winning streak since Jan. 11-25, 2004, before it went on to set a franchise record with 50 victories.
"The confidence is something that we have always had," Gay said. "I don't think it is (any) different as what we always have been. We are just playing basketball. We are getting better, that's all it is.
"We are just doing it at a higher level."
Randolph has averaged 20.4 points in his career versus Charlotte, but the Grizzlies had lost five of the previous six meetings before Conley's 20 points helped Memphis rally from 13 down for an 85-80 road victory April 20.
The Bobcats (4-3) look to cool off the Grizzlies by staying hot in their own right. Kemba Walker hit a jumper with 0.7 seconds remaining in an 89-87 win over Minnesota on Wednesday - saving Charlotte after it blew a 16-point lead.
Walker finished with a team-high 22 points and Byron Mullens added 12 and 15 rebounds.
Ramon Sessions scored 18 points off the bench and is averaging 16.3 - second to Walker's team-best 19.0 - despite not starting a game.
"It's a lot better learning in a win, I can tell you that much," Walker said. "But it's very important. There's going to be more games when we have that same situation. We've got to learn to take care of the basketball, make the right plays when we're up big."
Walker could certainly learn from April's loss to the Grizzlies. He had a career-high seven turnovers, missing 10 of 15 shots.
First-year coach Mike Dunlap has worked the team hard through the preseason and into the regular season, getting results not seen last season with the team on the verge of a four-game winning streak.
The Bobcats won four of their final 37 games of 2011-12.
"It's because the guys have bought the message and they've worked hard on the wood," Dunlap said. "We've had some long practices and we've heard some squawking on that. Hopefully the volume gets turned down on that a little bit because they can see the benefit."
