|
| | | ATLANTA: GUARDS: Considering he was almost gone a year ago, the Hawks are thankful JEFF TEAGUE is still in town. He may never be a great shooter, but he gets wherever he wants on the floor . . . KYLE KORVER is still the NBA's premier shooter, and he's shown no signs of relinquishing that title . . . THABO SEFOLOSHA gives the Hawks a defensive option to complement Korver. He looked worn down last season though, eventually falling out of OKC's rotation . . . KENT BAZEMORE gives Atlanta some more offensive firepower off the bench . . . DENNIS SCHRODER showed flashes of that Rajon Rondo Lite promise last year. Don't be surprised to see him paired with Teague in some lineups . . . There's no guarantee JOHN JENKINS will ever be the same after back surgery. FORWARDS: PAUL MILLSAP has developed into a capable co-alpha, along with Jeff Teague. In addition to his low-post work, he's developed a three-point shot and the ability to work off the dribble . . . DeMARRE CARROLL is trying to add a three-point shot to his repertoire. It would give him a big boost in offensive value to go along with his defense and all-around hustle . . . ADREIAN PAYNE will provide some much-needed depth at the 4 and 5 spots. He's NBA-ready, especially with his ability to pull opposing big men away from the basket with his shooting . . . MIKE MUSCALA gives them another big man who can shoot it, but he's not athletic enough to hold his own in the NBA. CENTERS: Will AL HORFORD ever stay healthy? He's an All-Star when he is. His recent injuries have been a bit fluky, but it's going to be tough to trust him . . . PERO ANTIC proved to be a capable stretch-5 last year, but the arrival of Payne will likely push him out of the rotation. | | BROOKLYN: GUARDS: Even after Paul Pierce came to Brooklyn, JOE JOHNSON remained the clear-cut No. 1 option in Brooklyn. Their offense figures to feature Johnson backing down defenders frequently again this year . . . DERON WILLIAMS seems to be deteriorating rapidly, struggling to stay healthy and losing confidence . . . JARRETT JACK figures to take Shaun Livingston's old role, playing alongside Williams often to take ball-handling duties off his plate . . . ALAN ANDERSON will see time at both wing spots as a defensive specialist who shoots some corner threes . . . SERGEY KARASEV has some long-term upside, but will do little this year . . . MARQUIS TEAGUE figures to have the edge on MARKEL BROWN for the No. 3 PG job. FORWARDS: With Paul Pierce gone, MIRZA TELETOVIC has a chance to take on a bigger role. He held his own defensively last year and provides another deep threat to space the floor . . . There's no telling what, if anything, they'll get out of ANDREI KIRILENKO this season. He seems to be at a point in his career when he's just not going to be able to stay healthy . . . BOJAN BOGDANOVIC should give Brooklyn some additional offensive firepower off the bench. He'll likely be a regular in the rotation by midseason . . . KEVIN GARNETT figures to play a bit more at the 4 alongside Brook Lopez, but there's pretty much no gas left in the tank for this 38-year-old player . . . Second-round pick CORY JEFFERSON is likely ticketed for the D-League. CENTERS: The Nets desperately need a healthy BROOK LOPEZ if they're going to win the Atlantic Division, but they'll have to monitor his minutes closely after another season lost to injury . . . With Lopez healthy, MASON PLUMLEE will resume his natural role as an energy guy off the bench. |

*Hawks-Nets Preview* ====================
By JACK CASSIDY STATS Writer
Atlanta At Brooklyn, Game Four, 7:00 p.m. EDT
The Atlanta Hawks hardly resemble the team that steamrolled its way through the regular season. The Brooklyn Nets finally took advantage of that slump in Game 3.
Looking to rediscover the offensive style that led them to the Eastern Conference's top seed, the Hawks could find themselves all square with the Nets should they put forth another lackluster performance Monday night.
Atlanta won a franchise-record 60 games this season, including 40 of its first 48, thanks to an admirably efficient offense that ranked atop the East with a 46.6 shooting percentage to help coach Mike Budenholzer earn the NBA's Coach of the Year award.
That level of play, however, has eluded the Hawks this postseason. They're averaging only 92.7 points on 39.0 percent shooting in this first-round series after scoring 102.5 per game during the regular season.
Following two single-digit victories in Games 1 and 2, the Hawks allowed the Nets to break off an 18-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters and lost 91-83 on Saturday.
"Even the two games that we won, I felt like we didn't shoot the best as a team," Al Horford said. "We need to figure out ways offensively to get easier baskets. ... From the beginning of the game, I felt like they had more of an edge than we did."
Jeff Teague, who admitted his team's offense is "very far" from where they were during the regular season, especially struggled from the floor Saturday. The All-Star shot 4 for 13 and had 12 points to go with six assists and four turnovers, bringing his assist-to-turnover ratio through three games to 1.36 - well below his 2.50 mark this season.
The shooting woes extend throughout Atlanta's lineup.
Kyle Korver converted only one of eight shots in Game 3 and was 0 for 5 from behind the arc to mark his first game without a 3-pointer when attempting more than two since April 11, 2014 - which also came at Brooklyn - and Horford was 3 for 12 with seven points.
"We played pretty slow tonight," Paul Millsap said. "That's not how we play. We play fast. We got caught up in their pace tonight, simple as that. They did a good job of slowing us down."
Brooklyn played well at home toward the end of the regular season, winning seven of its final nine at Barclays Center. The Nets' frontcourt of Brook Lopez and Thaddeus Young carried that success into Game 3 as they combined for 40 points and 24 rebounds in a victory that ended a seven-game skid against Atlanta dating to their loss last April 11.
Lopez has a history of solid the Hawks in Brooklyn. Prior to Saturday, the seventh-year center had 20 points against Atlanta on Dec. 5, then put up 26 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks April 8. Including the postseason, Lopez has averaged 20.6 points in 10 career home contests against the Hawks.
"We know they're going to make adjustments, but we really feel we can compete with these guys and we have a lot of confidence right now," Lopez said.
It was also an encouraging Game 3 performance from Young, who scored 15 points with 10 rebounds in Game 1, but sputtered to only two points in Game 2. The eighth-year power forward credited his improved play to an increased physicality.
"This is a big boys' game," Young told the Nets' official website. "You have to be able to withstand runs and make your presence felt on the court. You have to impose your will on the game the whole time. We did a good job of just imposing our will on the game."
Deron Williams, who has scored only five points over his last two games, could be limited Monday due to injury. He did not play the final 16 minutes of Brooklyn's Game 3 win, and is reportedly dealing with tendinitis.
