|
| | | CHARLOTTE: GUARDS: RAMON SESSIONS will have to adjust to a major downgrade in teammates, but he has the kind of versatile offensive skill set to be the focal point of this offense . . . The athletic GERALD HENDERSON has made strides the past two seasons. Realistically, his offensive skills are those of a No. 4 or 5 option . . . Coach Mike Dunlap is high on KEMBA WALKER, who was sometimes overwhelmed as a rookie. With a few new sets built in for him, he could thrive as a sixth man getting starter's minutes . . . BEN GORDON won't overtake Henderson, but should see big minutes as the Cats' only shooter . . . REGGIE WILLIAMS is a D-League talent . . . MATT CARROLL, in the final year of his $27 million deal, symbolizes everything that's gone wrong under Michael Jordan. FORWARDS: Drafting MICHAEL KIDD-GILCHRIST was as much about changing the losing culture as it was adding a piece they needed. MKG's statistical output is a question mark, but he'll see big minutes as a defensive stopper and intangibles guy . . . This team is seriously lacking in the post, where they may have no choice but to play TYRUS THOMAS for significant minutes. The talented but uber-underachieving big man claims to have added 20 pounds of muscle in the offseason. If nothing else, they might showcase him in a desperate attempt to get some trade value . . . Rookie JEFFERY TAYLOR figures to make the team and has the versatility and athleticism to be a respectable second-unit guy. CENTERS: Charlotte sees BISMACK BIYOMBO as a franchise cornerstone. He can certainly rebound and block shots, but his offense is atrocious . . . BRENDAN HAYWOOD brings a veteran presence. At his age he can't go more than 15 or so minutes per night . . . BYRON MULLENS never saw a shot he didn't like. He'll get one more chance to prove he's an NBA rotation player, able to play the four or five . . . DeSAGANA DIOP is doing those things that DeSagana Diop does. | | BROOKLYN: GUARDS: DERON WILLIAMS is healthy and got a much-improved supporting cast to work with. He could re-enter the NBA's best point guard discussion . . . JOE JOHNSON won't have the ballin his hands as much as he used to in Atlanta. It might give him a chance to concentrate on regaining his stroke as one of the NBA's best shooters . . . MARSHON BROOKS will look to settle in as a high-scoring sixth man. He'll be trade bait for most of the season . . . After a disastrous year in Chicago, C.J. WATSON will be asked to spell Williams for a few minutes a night . . . KEITH BOGANS is still kicking around as a second unit glue guy . . . TYSHAWN TAYLOR is an at-times out-of-control combo guard, but the rookie could threaten Watson's role at some point. FORWARDS: KRIS HUMPHRIES' contract was structured to make him easier to trade. He'll rebound and get his put-backs, and the Nets will likely showcase him a bit . . . GERALD WALLACE is slowing down, and now that he's signed his last big NBA contract he might not have much incentive to live up to his 'Crash' nickname. Brooklyn has no choice but to give him heavy minutes considering their investment . . . MIRZA TELETOVIC is a veteran stretch four. Consider him a penniless man's Channing Frye . . . TORNIKE SHENGELIA played himself into a roster spot this summer. He's a mediocre athlete, but a cagey scorer with a high basketball IQ . . . JOSH CHILDRESS and JERRY STACKHOUSE were added in September for depth . . . REGGIE EVANS will flop unconvincingly, punch opponents in the jewels and bring other 'tough guy' intangibles. CENTERS: BROOK LOPEZ had been remarkably durable before last year's foot injury, and he should be fully healed by the start of training camp. He's gifted offensively, but will continue to grab relatively few rebounds and generally get fried defensively. He's also a candidate to be traded midseason if another franchise can stomach his max contract . . . As insurance, former Wizards big man ANDRAY BLATCHE was brought in. He could be the team's best interior defender, able to play either the four or five spot. |

*Bobcats-Nets Preview* ======================
By ALAN FERGUSON STATS Writer
Charlotte (18-57) at Brooklyn (43-32), 7:30 p.m. EDT
After missing a prime opportunity to pad their lead on fourth place in the Eastern Conference, the Brooklyn Nets will try to take advantage of a pair of seemingly favorable matchups.
The Nets will play two teams that are out of playoff contention to wrap up their homestand, beginning with Saturday night's game against the lowly Charlotte Bobcats.
Brooklyn (43-32) couldn't get past a severely short-handed Chicago team in its return from an eight-game road trip Thursday, falling 92-90. The Nets blew a 16-point lead and squandered a three-point advantage in the final 52 seconds.
"This is a game that we desperately needed considering where we are in the standings at this point," swingman Joe Johnson said after ending a five-game absence due to injury. "In the first half, we were pretty good. And in the second half I just didn't think we pushed the ball as much as we did in the first and play as loose as we did in the first and it hurt us."
Brook Lopez, who finished with 28 points, also missed two shots and committed a turnover in the final 33 seconds.
"It's tough, just because our team was playing so well for the majority of the game and I contributed a lot to how the final score ended up and that's definitely not something I'm happy about," Lopez said.
The loss cost Brooklyn the tiebreaker over fifth-place Chicago, which trails by just one game in the race for home-court advantage in a first-round playoff series. Sixth-place Atlanta dropped two games back with a loss to Philadelphia on Friday.
"The three of us are so close that we could leapfrog each other," interim coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "(The fourth seed) is so much better. (The fifth spot) is the worst you could possibly be."
The Nets will try to stay ahead of those two teams by taking care of Charlotte (18-58) and Philadelphia in the next two games.
Brooklyn, winners in six straight over the Bobcats and three in a row at home, has prevailed by a combined 37 points in this season's two matchups.
Lopez scored 26 in a 97-81 home victory Dec. 28, and Johnson and Deron Williams combined for 42 in a 99-78 win in Charlotte on March 6. Williams had a game-best 30 points Thursday,
The Bobcats are 1-18 on the road since Jan. 27 and 2-6 in their last eight overall contests after falling 89-79 to a short-handed Miami on Friday. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist had 18 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, but Gerald Henderson and Kemba Walker combined to miss 26 of 31 shots.
"(Saturday) night is going to be a heck of a challenge because the Nets need to hold their spot," coach Mike Dunlap said. "We've got to turn the page and get to the Nets ASAP."
The Nets have won in 23 of 32 all-time matchups with the Bobcats.
